A way to calm public anger while quietly working things out behind closed doors.

We've seen this script before: arrest, brief detention, a few headlines, then silence. By the time the courts are done (if it even gets that far), the public has moved on, and the victim's family is left with grief and no justice. And often, the individual resurfaces in another area, possibly even under a different name, continuing business as usual.

That said, public pressure can sometimes shift outcomes. If people keep paying attention and demanding accountability, even the most protected individuals can be held to account — but it requires sustained effort, not just momentary outrage.

So while the cynicism is valid, the pressure to see this through must remain. Otherwise, yes — it’ll likely fade away like so many before it.
