The newly crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the creation of Ibadan State before the year 2027. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The monarch made the passionate plea on Friday during his official coronation at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, where he received the staff and instrument of office from Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The historic ceremony was graced by President Tinubu, prominent political leaders, and traditional rulers from across Nigeria.
Ladoja’s Message to Tinubu

Delivering his remarks in Yoruba, the Olubadan said:

“My people sent me a message to Mr President. Mr President, they said the creation of Ibadan State is their priority.”

His call reflects long-standing demands by indigenes who believe Ibadan’s size, history, and population justify its recognition as a state.

Makinde Hails Coronation

Governor Makinde, who cut short his annual leave to attend the event, described the installation of Oba Ladoja as “a historic moment and a source of pride” to Ibadanland.

“It is a great honour to join in celebrating the coronation and presentation of the Staff of Office to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The joy and excitement filling Ibadan today remind us of the importance of upholding our cherished traditions,” the governor said.

Makinde’s official resumption letter had been acknowledged just a day before by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
Renewed Push for Ibadan State

The demand for Ibadan State is not new. In October 2024, a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to create Ibadan State and a separate Oyo State passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, sponsored by Hon. Akeem Adeyemi (son of the late Alaafin of Oyo) and six other lawmakers, proposed that Oyo Town should serve as the capital of the new Oyo State, while Ibadan City would be the capital of Ibadan State.

With the Olubadan now making a direct appeal to President Tinubu, many political watchers believe the push for Ibadan State creation may gain fresh momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

At this rate, every major city will ask to be a state and then in then end, we will have a country with many Ebonyis and Ekitis....states that just shouldn't exist. Parasitic states that rely only on FAAC allocation!

I would have said we need more local governments cos this is the government closest to the people and the level at which most development starts but our local governments are all useless. Sad situation

Add a state to SW, SS, NC, NE and add two states to SE. This will make each region have seven states just like NW.

Let's start by adding one to SE first.

Ibadan is the Capital of the old western state/region and transforming it to a state will alienate it from rest of the South West people, except the whole of Lagos state will become the new regional capital of South West!
