Owning a smartphone in Nigeria is already expensive, but repairing one has now become a bigger headache than even buying it in the first place. Crack your iPhone screen and the first thing you’ll hear is ₦150k–₦250k. Try fixing a Samsung Galaxy screen, and they’ll call ₦120k upwards. Even so-called “budget” brands like Tecno, Infinix or Itel are not cheap, screen replacement alone can cost ₦40k–₦60k. At that point, many people start thinking: “Why not just add money and buy another phone instead of repairing this one?” The sad part is that it’s not just about the cost, it’s also about the availability and quality of parts. Most of the time, original spares are either out of stock or ridiculously overpriced. The alternatives? Fake or China copies that don’t last more than a few weeks before another problem shows up. And since many brands don’t have proper service centers in Nigeria, most people are forced to rely on roadside engineers. Some are good, but others make the phone worse after you’ve already spent heavily. Another angle is whether brands themselves are part of the problem. Many phones today are designed in ways that make repairs difficult. Simple things like replacing a battery or screen now require special tools and trained technicians. Could it be that manufacturers are deliberately making repairs complicated and expensive, just to push us into buying new models every few years? It’s a real possibility, considering how the global phone industry thrives on constant upgrades. Now let’s bring it home: in Nigeria where the economy is tight, is it really wise to be spending ₦200k just to fix a phone you originally bought for ₦500k? Or does it make more sense to cut your losses, sell it off as scrap, and add money for a fresh one? Some people say repair is always cheaper, others argue that it’s better to just start afresh because the cycle of repairs never ends once a phone begins to have issues. So, I’m curious to hear from fellow Nairalanders, what has been your own experience with phone repairs? How much did it cost you the last time you fixed your device? Was it worth it, or did you regret not just getting a new phone instead? Let’s discuss, because this repair issue is affecting almost everyone, no matter the brand you use. |

This is so true! I cracked my Samsung A03s screen last year and was quoted over ₦50k. The phone itself was barely ₦100k at the time. I decided to repair it with a "China copy" screen, which worked fine for about 3 months before it started flickering and eventually died. The roadside engineer who fixed it initially was nowhere to be found. It was a complete waste of money. I'm saving up for a new one now because the repair cycle is just too risky. |

I think the issue is finding a good, trustworthy technician. The prices you quoted for iPhones and Samsungs are for the premium models. For a standard iPhone 11 or Samsung S20, the price for an original screen replacement is a bit lower, but still high. The problem is a lack of official service centers. Brands like Infinix and Tecno have Carlcare, which, even though it can be expensive, at least guarantees an original part. We need more of that in Nigeria to build trust and ensure quality. |

I believe repairing is still the better option, but only if the damage is minor and the phone is relatively new. For example, a simple battery replacement on a two-year-old phone is a smart move because it extends the device's life without a huge cost. But for a badly damaged, older phone, it's just throwing good money after bad. The cost of a major repair can be 50% or more of the phone's original value, and for that price, you can buy a newer model with a warranty and better features |

My experience has been a mix. I once spent ₦10k to fix my Redmi Note 8 charging port and it worked perfectly. But my friend's iPhone screen repair for ₦100k was a nightmare—the touch sensitivity was never the same. It really depends on the phone model, the specific damage, and luck with the technician. It's a gamble. The post is spot on about the lack of original parts and reliable service. It's not just about the cost of the repair, it's the lack of certainty that the repair will even last. |

I feel like manufacturers are part of the problem. Phones today are glued shut and require proprietary tools, making it impossible for the average person to do a simple fix. This is a deliberate strategy to force us to buy new phones. They talk about sustainability, but they are the biggest culprits of electronic waste. In a country like Nigeria where affordability is a huge factor, this practice is particularly cruel. I'd love to see a "right to repair" law implemented here. |

Thank you for bringing this up cos I’m baffled with the way it’s so expensive to fix a phone now. My sister’s phone was faulty and I followed her to the repairer’s shop. The funny part was I overheard him telling his apprentice that to repair OPPO screen, the customer must have 90k. I was wowed and humbled.😂😂 |

Exactly o, I tell people to buy phones they can afford money to change the screen. If not, the phone will just be useless when the screen breaks |

Thomasdike:very true o, you start hearing the phone repairer saying the cost of repairs will be high because it's difficult to open the phone |

When you say phone repair, you mean screen replacement right? Cos that's usually the most expensive part to replace apart from the motherboard (sometimes). The reason why screen replacements are so expensive is the technology involved in making such screens. Ips LCD screens are cheaper to make and cost less to replace. These are the screens you find on certain entry level and even midrange phones. Even the iPhone 11 was using LCD screens. Oled screens are more expensive and close more to replace. Almost all flagship use oleds and some higher mid range phones too. When you buy a Samsung S22, don't use it like an iPhone 6 that you can change it's screen for 10k. Original oled/amoled screen for any device at all will cost you at least 120k. |

Leilalee:This is price for oled below, LCD is half of that

LCDs use more power than oleds, your phone that came with oled screen gets damaged and you replace with a cheaper, inferior LCD, your phone battery starts to drain faster. Your conclusion will be: ever since I changed my screen, my battery has been draining and my phone gets hot, perhaps you even blame the engineer for botched repairs |

The biggest issue is original parts. Even if you have the money, finding legit spares is tough. That’s why service centers are very important. |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by Praizee5: 11:35pm On Sep 21, 2025 |
Khay2:That’s why brands that open service centers here get respect, at least you know you’re getting original repairs. |

For me, the best phone is one that survives falls and doesn’t need repairs every two weeks 😍.. It's everythingproof if you know you know 😊😊😊 |

Leilalee:From the importers and the sellers down to the repairers Like I charged someone 150k for 13pm screen But another repairer charged him 180k for same exact screen I bought mine from china for 50k He bought his own 130k here in Nigeria from sellers I made 100k He made 50k and the owners were thinking that his own is too cost |

Titobliss:You made a really solid point about trust and official centers. Even with high costs, at least Carlcare gives that confidence that you’re getting the real deal. I just wonder why other brands haven’t replicated that model, imagine if Samsung or Xiaomi had walk-in centers everywhere. |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by StellaGirlie(op): 12:20pm On Sep 27, 2025 |
Adeyemisunday:That’s the thing, it’s such a gamble. You can spend ₦10k and walk away happy, or spend ₦100k and end up frustrated. It’s not just the price; it’s the uncertainty. Sometimes even “original” parts behave funny. |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by StellaGirlie(op): 12:21pm On Sep 27, 2025 |
AdedejiAdesewa:Exactly! There’s definitely a line between smart maintenance and wasteful spending. Minor fixes like charging ports or batteries make sense, but once it’s half the cost of the phone, it starts feeling pointless. |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by StellaGirlie(op): 12:22pm On Sep 27, 2025 |
Thomasdike:Facts. The “glued shut” design is one of the biggest traps, you can’t even change a battery anymore without heating tools. And you’re right about the hypocrisy around sustainability; they preach recycling but design products that can’t be repaired |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by StellaGirlie(op): 12:23pm On Sep 27, 2025 |
Tolalizzy:😂 That OPPO got me too. ₦90k just to fix a screen? At this point, repairers also know people are desperate so they inflate costs. I wonder if these prices are actually from parts suppliers or just arbitrary markup by engineers trying to survive. |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by StellaGirlie(op): 12:24pm On Sep 27, 2025 |
onlyedwin:😂 True talk. Samsung phones are sweet till you hear the repair price. Once you break that screen, it’s game over. |
| Re: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by StellaGirlie(op): 12:24pm On Sep 27, 2025 |
FM19addict:You just dropped a whole masterclass here. That OLED vs LCD explanation actually makes a lot of sense, most people don’t even realize screen type affects replacement cost. |
