Many people in my life are allowed to visit my home, unannounced.

My default rule is no one but if you catch me in the right mood, on the right day, in a blessed month then I might open the door. I don’t drop in on people and I don’t like my personal space invaded without prior approval.

I'm a lastborn and once a lastborn, always a lastborn (they will talk down to me till I'm 70 or they're dead, whichever comes first ). So I like being alone.

Since childhood, my fantasy has been to live in a medium-sized coastal town, far from my family. I can visit but everyone should be far.

The funniest thing is that my aunt-in-law is welcome more than one of my full sisters (case in point: I used to drive past my sister's house in Lekki to go to my aunt-in-law in Ikoyi and her friends used to wonder which of her daughters I was. Even my family used to look at me in awe, my sister would tell her friends and they'd be in disbelief.

I had this discussion with my husband before we went to visit my sis-in-law last summer. I asked him if he had told his sis that we were coming before booking the flight. He said he didn’t need permission. I told him that it’s not about permission as my family doesn’t need permission either and neither do I. When he called his sis, after he had booked the flights, she told him that she had already booked flights too to go and see their junior brother. We went anyway but didn’t get to spend as much time together as we could have given that she was gone for a week and we were alone in her house half of our stay.

Last year my other sister sent her kids to stay with us. It was during the busiest period of the year when I’m working 10-12 hours shifts. Everybody enjoyed themselves but I couldn’t even though I was the one to take care of the food, beds and the rest.

I love having family and friends but I like to be prepared too.

I like my personal space too much. Nobody will even open the gate for you in my compound sef.

Imagine! All the ish you have to do to accommodate them; 1) put clothes on,2) tidy the kitchen and check the bathroom is presentable (hiding undies etc) 3) start making teas and coffees and even food! Nah, if you’re going to send me to work at least give me 3/5 hours heads up.

Lol, funny enough I like hosting people in my house but I like plans to be made first, at least 24-72hrs notice. Loooool.

Thankfully we live in different provinces and he can't just come over whenever he feels like it.

If my mom was still alive, she'll definitely have that right.
