NosyNursy:Check your tax code and claim back your overpaid tax from HMRC. Pensions are taken out before tax, normally 5%....Income tax should be only 20% and NI about 4%. In fact you shouldn't even be taxed if your income is less than £12500 per year. |

NosyNursy:Do you have 2 jobs or irregular earnings from another source?...it looks like you are being assessed to the higher tax rate without any tax-free allowance If HMRC is unsure about what you're total income would be due to an extra income, they may assess it to the higher tax rate without tax-free allowance. Contact them if your total annual income will fall below this band or else leave it. |

Lol ...I think to an extent, the digital ID might be a good idea to aggregate the UK identity platforms (passport, eVisa, driver's license, NI, NHS number etc) into one but definitely might not help in stopping illegal immigrants from working illegaly any more than the 'prove your immigration status' sharecode had. Borrowing from the experience back then in Ghana when every foreigner was required to get the Foreign resident Ghana Card, failure which led to their mobile telephony, mobile money and bank accounts suspended, it did not stop the illegals coming into Ghana but rather made proxy financial transactions more prominent. Similar might be applicable to foreigners in the UK but not the citizens Even at that, it would do little to block the illegal immigrants. Not forgetting the legal actions that would be instituted to fight all the human right violations not getting the card would result to.Jamesclooney: |

You get it. Same way BVN exposed a lot before they started circumventing its use Starmer knows if he ties it to illegal immigrants, people would support it He didn't expect the push backs, I'm sure after more debates, eyes would open to the real benefits.Goke7: |

NosyNursy:Probably working for an agency. If you do not know how to work out your tax deductions, they will run you street. That is too much deduction. Way too much. Ask questions anytime you see your pay slip. Another alternative is to look for job elsewhere. |

Jamesclooney:Quite interesting he chooses to bring this on now knwoing fully well there'd be good opposition to it. I'd discount most of of the backlash though which seem to stem from conspiracy theories that have blossomed of late. Eitherway, no matter what, he should do himself good and not backdown on this as a retreat might very well be the end of his premiership. |

What's the difference between increasing the time to get ILR retrospectively and reform deporting folks with ILR already? ![]() On this, Labour has no moral ground like opined in this article since both policies are the same and will unsettle the people who are in this category. Please is it allowed for one's sister to come into the UK and leave the UK with one's child? My 5 year old is in Nigeria for the time being due to some reasons (has a dependent visa), my sister is coming on a visit visa for an exam so want them to come together and stay about a month, they will leave together again after the visit. How do they navigate the journey without issues please? |

New Home Sec, Mahmood, is expected to unveil some conditions of the proposed ILR policy during her conference speech today. It appears that they want 10 years to be the baseline, not the cap - those who do not meet the new conditions could take longer than 10 years to achieve ILR, while some might not ever qualify. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/09/28/migrants-must-contribute-or-leave-uk-shabana-mahmood/#comment https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/sep/28/english-indefinite-leave-to-remain-shabana-mahmood-labour-conference |

Zahra29:Pathetic as they keep mixing up people on refugee status who can apply for ILR after 5 years and those on the skilled worker route. Of course, hardworking immigrants without recourse to public funds will always be the sacrificial lamb. |

Zahra29:This guy called Nigel Farage. He is not in Government, yet he shapes Government policy. He is not the Her Majesty’s official leader of opposition, yet he lives rent-free in Keir Starmer’s head. See as Shabana Mahmoud Dey panic on top Nigel ILR matter. What I don’t understand is this: Labour says ILR applicants must sabi English, pay taxes, no recourse to public funds, isn’t that what we ALL have been going thru? Shebi we need to write IELTS, write Life in the UK, pay taxes. Not take benefits. Be of good character, etc…. Why is the labor government sounding as if this is something new? |

KOVIC19COVID20:I wonder. The 10 year route is still vague in my opinion though. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 5:47pm On Sep 29, 2025 |
KOVIC19COVID20:The proposed ILR changes are not only being targeted at skilled workers - other groups such as SWV dependents and asylum seekers will also be impacted. The latter currently do not have to be in employment and pay taxes in order to achieve ILR. Refugees can access benefits before ILR etc so some of the proposed eligibility conditions will impact some groups more. |
| Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 5:54pm On Sep 29, 2025 |
babajeje123:10 years is being proposed as the baseline qualifying period for ILR if certain basic conditions are met. If these conditions are not met = ILR could take longer than 10 years, or might never be achieved. If additional conditions are met which demonstrate significant contribution e.g. high salary, specialist skills, considerable community impact etc (earned settlement) = ILR could take less than 10 years |
