Lewis Hamilton has revealed he made the “hardest decision” of his life to put his 12-year-old bulldog Roscoe to sleep.

The British former world champion missed a Formula One tyre test in Italy on Friday to be with his sick pet, who had been hospitalised with pneumonia.

The 40-year-old Ferrari driver said Roscoe had died in his arms on Sunday.

“After four days on life support, fighting with every bit of strength he had, I had to make the hardest decision of my life and say goodbye to Roscoe. He never stopped fighting, right until the very end,” Hamilton wrote on Instagram.

“I feel so grateful and honoured to have shared my life with such a beautiful soul, an angel and true friend. Bringing Roscoe into my life was the best decision I ever made, and I will forever cherish the memories we created together.

“It is one of the most painful experiences and I feel a deep connection to everyone who has gone through the loss of a beloved pet.”

Roscoe has been a regular feature in the F1 paddock and at major events such as awards ceremonies since the seven-time world champion adopted him in 2013.

Hamilton is set to be back in action at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

I remember watching my friend Bala cry uncontrollably...

When he lost his dog. I was 12 he was 13. We took it out and buried it together. It was a "mini" funeral.

My sister also lost her Pekinese dog. She didn't eat for weeks. Ironically, she had to travel some time prior to the dog's death and had to leave the dog in my care... the dog refused to eat anything during her absence and was looking so sad and miserable until she returned.

I understand the bond between man and pet but in all honesty I don't think I have the ability to bond so much with a pet.

Anyway rest in peace Roscoe... you came, saw and probably lived a better life than some humans!

Dogs life span is at an average of 10-12 years. As a human being, if you don't want kids but prefer dogs in place of kids. You'll have to be mentally prepared to be mourning your dogs every other decade

The same pain you feel, the same depression, the same memories we create with human is the same we do with dogs. May the soul of that dog rest well. It hurts to lose anything. 2 of my dogs died this year and I've not recovered from their demise.

This is not entirely true. I have seen a dog that lived up to 21 here in Nigeria. So not entirely true. It depends

My 2 dogs of blessed memory... Polly and Pedro. RIP. I'm sure we'll meet someday to part no more.
