This present democracy is actually an extension of military rule. The true democracy we ever had was from 1950s to 1966 and it still remains the best governance time in the history of Nigeria. 1966 was the year the military took over and immediately Nigeria experienced an avoidable war which took millions of innocent lives and then a scale of corruption not previously known in Nigeria became our culture. The military proceeded to legalize corruption and destroy all our institutions of government due to centralization of power and resources. The fact that we are still operating a centralized system forcefully bequeath on us by the military is an evidence that military rule has not really ended regardless of the fact that we now do elections and have legislature. When military rule truly ends in Nigeria, you will appreciate democracy.

The Decree 34 was about the civil service, not the structure of Nigeria its self. It was Gowon that came in after Ironsi and abolished the 4 Region's that were on ground, created the first 12 states and took away resource control

Obasanjo tried to correct it in 1978 during the 1979 constitution drafting stage as he set up a committee to review that part of the constitution to be headed by Nwabueze who by experience was supposed to know that centralization of power and resources which he advised Ironsi to do in 1966 had actually injured the country and destroyed everything but Nwabueze used his committee to even further centralize power and resources more than how he did under Ironsi.

Igbos started the war by declaring Biafra. Recall that Azikiwe had succeeded in getting any secession declaration a criminal offense in the Nigerian Constitution. Also when Isaac Adaka Boro declared Niger Delta Republic earlier on, Aguiyi Ironsi and Ojukwu attacked him and killed 150 of his soldiers for the crime of declaring secession/war on Nigeria.

After Balewa was confirmed dead, the federal Parliament threw Alhaji Dipcharima up as the democratic replacement for Balewa but Aguiyi Ironsi refused and forcefully took power from the parliament because he had an igbo-centric ulterior motive which was to come and destroy the regions

Before I left Nigeria, I remember how many Igbos were arguing upandan that Buhari was dead and that a clone called Jubrin from Sudan was the one ruling Nigeria. There is no logic or sense on that story yet they kept telling it hoping it will become true.

If I'm correct all the igbos ever wanted was a secession. They were dissatisfied with the way things were run by the other major tribes and they decided to create their own Republic.
