According to the World Prison Brief, pre-trial detainees consistently make up the vast majority of Nigeria's prison population, peaking at 74.0% in 2005 and still standing at 65.7% as of September 2025.
If you have experience working in the Nigerian legal or correctional system, or if you or someone you know has faced a long delay in the pre-trial process, we want to hear from you in the comments.
What is the primary factor driving this persistent crisis of "awaiting trial" inmates, and what change has been most effective in finally getting cases heard?

Blame the police and the judiciary for justice delay in the country. There are hardened criminals they ought to have dispatch but because of bribery and corruption their godfather's in crime are still buying time for them.. we have to wake up and call a spade a spade.

not really, the major problem is that the judicial system in Nigeria is very weak, then the number of judges are too low compared with crime rates and population of Nigeria, then the police is very corrupt( there are people that should not even be brought to court) stemming from illegal arrests and so on, then you have the political side and the bribery of judges, in all it points to one thing(a failed government).

Go and read up on Venezuela prisons and you might see where Nigeria might be heading to.

Jesus Christ, we have the worst judicial system ever.
The police on the other are the major cause of this.
Funny enough, 3 out of the 10 might be innocent

God forbid oooo.

But the first day "anything" lands me in a Nigerian prison is the same day I'll start planning my jailbreak.

The Nigerian Prison system wasn't designed to transform offenders, rather it's a place where criminals become hardened or suffer till they die.

Most of Awaiting Trial Inmates are being prosecuted in state courts by state DPP.

Its time state governments build and operate holding centres aka jails . The FG also needs to build holding centres to cater for awaiting trial inmates .

Prisons should only be places of remand for convicted felons. And the prison system must be overhauled that violent offenders are housed in separate facilities .

The congestion in prisons is due to overwhelming backlog of cases being handled by courts. The States need to appoint more judges State DPP must also be expanded to hire more lawyers as public prosecutors .

But most importantly, the Police must be stopped from prosecuting cases as they are the ones arraigning people to court on flimsy trumped up charges.

huh

If I'm the president of Nigeria, this is part of what I going to quickly work on in collaboration with the judges, this is the more reason why we have a lot of co gestion, and yet they budget billions of naira on feeding and still not enough to feed the innocent lives..

May God help us in this country
