‘Heartbreaking’: Deputy Speaker Kalu On Lagos Trade Fair Demolitions by Bobloco(op): 3:46am On Oct 04, 2025
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has described the demolition of buildings at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex as heartbreaking.

Speaking on Friday during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Abia State for the commissioning of projects executed by the Governor Alex Otti administration, Kalu said the exercise “makes our hearts bleed.”

The president was represented at the event by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

“Mr President, I also want to say that the destruction, demolition of the houses and offices of our brothers in Lagos makes our hearts bleed,” Kalu said.

The Deputy Speaker appealed to President Tinubu to intervene with the Lagos authorities and allow defaulters time to regularise their documents instead of losing their properties.

For some of them who have not gotten the right document, my plea is to appeal to the governor of Lagos State (Babajide Sanwo-Olu) to keep accommodating our brothers.

Let them come into the room and find a way of regularising some of these documents. It bleeds our hearts that in this hard time, houses are being destroyed. But I know Mr President, who cares for the Igbos, will listen to the yearnings of the Igbos,” he said.

He also called on the Federal Government to prioritise port development in the South East to support the region’s trading economy.

His appeal follows the commencement of the demolition of illegal and unsafe structures at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.

DAILY POST reports that the operation, carried out on September 25, involved the Ministry of Physical Planning, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Urban Renewal Agency, and the Physical Planning Permit Authority.

It is getting clearer that LASG is doing sentimental cleansing. Can the same rule be applied to Ebute-Meta, Lagos Island, where houses are clustered without PLAN. grin grin grin grin grin

I am not Igbo but I and many others of various tribes (mostly Yoruba) are also battling with LASG in respect of proper documentation of land and building approval. It is necessary in a sane environment. We've received notices and are complying.

FG owns Trade Fair land but town planning and building approvals are done by State Governments. Those whose properties are duly approved will be duly compensated if demolished.

No one is above the law. Let's learn to do the right thing and stop playing victim.

When I see comments like this, I genuinely regret and wonder where some of you crawl out from. Lagos is telling who to ‘do their worst’? You beat your chest and, yet your family doesn’t even own a plot the size of a Keke parking spot in Lagos. Lagos was built by sweat, sacrifice, and the hands of people from all over Nigeria and beyond. Some of you only stumbled into Lagos yesterday, clinging to a Yoruba surname like it’s a deed of ownership, shouting entitlement as if history started with you. Calm down being loud doesn’t make you right, it just makes you noisy.

I am surprised this Deputy Speaker Kalu didn't support the demolition to please Bola Tinubu's people, are you sure he said this?

Our brothers from the Southwest don't want to learn from Europeans, continue bragging that your land is now the Kingdom and paradise forever, continue, time will make you guys understand better.

Egypt was once the destination of the world but now, it is 'another used to be'. Paris has rested after it trended for decades. Dubai is reigning now, its time too shall pass. Coming down here, Calabar was once the beautiful bride but now e done rest. I will stop here for now. Everything that goes up must surely come down but the manner with which it comes down determines its future. We shall see.

The worst form of submission is continuing to empower a system that sidelines you.
Imagine if every Igbo entrepreneur and consumer consciously boycotted goods, services, and products headquartered in Lagos , from telecommunications and banking to oil, gas, and corporate giants profiting from the East while paying taxes elsewhere.

Picture the inauguration of a strategic economic revival team that mandates every Igbo business operating in Lagos to establish a parallel enterprise in the East under a new brand identity before being licensed to trade locally. Add to that a sales tax on goods not produced in the East, and a cultural policy ensuring at least 10% airtime for artists and content creators based in the region.

The message is simple and urgent,The East must wake up, organize, and reclaim its own economic destiny.
We are empowering Lagos too much , now that Lagos has turned into the economic powerhouse of yorubas, any business on the east paying tax tp Lagos should be treated with less priority.

Please notice I left out the churches out of reverence for God.

Ojukwu warned them at trade fair complex but they refused to listen. Those whose property has been demolished their body to calm down, those thinking of building kwa, their body go calm down. Igbos learn from northerners and face your region

Why are you so inconsiderate and always make everything to be Igbo vs Yoruba.

What about other tribes that their properties were destroyed including that of Yoruba and Lagos indigene.

The whole community of indigenous people were destroyed without compensation.

I lost a family properties to Army barrack, INEC office and school, yet many of us take it as a necessary sacrifice for the betterment of Lagos state.

Grow up and be objective, no amount of victimisation cry will change anything.

I vividly remember how igbos were targetted in the north 1999,early 2000s after OBJ came to office. There was nobody coming to help igbos , not even the federal capital.

But something remarkable happened and changed the whole narratives . It was when Aba and onitsha replied Kano and Kaduna was when the whole battle tide changed. Otherwise qe would have been having kano ,kaduna riots going on today with igbo lives and businesses paying the ultimate price.
Aba and Onitsha businesses need to sit down and finalize a reply that will kill commerce in Lagos, and you will see thise cretins come on their knees and beg.
Before, kano was the all in all in commerce in the north and competing with lagos and Kaduna was mirroring Abuja until pride came in.

The people who should sit down and craft the policies that will bring Lagos on its knees are in Aba,Onitsha, China,Dubai, Singapore, and proposing their next imports.

That was what we were told in kano, kaduna and maiduguri. It is funny how people don't realize who made Lagos what it is presently today until the day Lagos crashes like kano and kaduna did .

A simple change in the business model of igbos will put Lagos where it should be.

You're clearly deflecting because you can't address the actual point. Nobody said Yoruba people didn't sacrifice for Lagos. But the issue here is not about general loss of land to public development that’s a separate conversation, and frankly, not what this is about.

The original comment was calling out the arrogance, entitlement, and tribal superiority complex some people parade around as if Lagos owes them something more than others, despite the fact that Lagos was built by the collective effort of diverse Nigerians, Yoruba included, but not exclusively.

Losing family land to public institutions like army barracks or INEC offices isn’t unique to you or your tribe, it's happened all over Nigeria. Trying to use that as a counterpoint to the call-out of tribal bîgótry is a weak attempt to dodge accountability. It’s not victimisation to state historical facts and challenge revisionist entitlement.

So let’s stay on topic: If you’re going to beat your chest about "owning" Lagos and telling others to “do their worst,” don’t get sensitive when people remind you that Lagos is bigger than your surname, your big.otry and your ego. This isn't Igbo vs Yoruba, it's ignorance vs truth. Try not to confuse the two.

It's so sad that the so called government are the one doing this to innocent peoples. I know some people that never buy bag of cement @ their 30,40,50 not to talk of acquired a land will support this nonsense that lagos state government are doing to people.

They will employ touts to oversee government institutions. This touts they will keep collecting bribery and intimidating those who are not willing to pay.

Oh, you didn't see it as an irritating noise when your kin were busy declaring Lagos a no man's land which has been conquered by Ibo (when Obi won Lagos with the help of Yorubas) or when they were doing nzogbu nzogbu dances with cutlasses and machetes. You haven't seen anything yet. There are consequences for actions.

you’re quick to single out Igbos with tribal hatred, but have you forgotten that the claim 'Lagos is no man’s land' has been echoed by many people from various ethnic backgrounds even Daniel Bwala recently said it. Yet, you choose to weaponize that narrative just to spew bitterness against one group.

And as for your mention of Obi winning Lagos with Yoruba support maybe instead of throwing shade, you should acknowledge that Lagos was built and is sustained by the sweat and sacrifice of people from all over Nigeria and beyond.

Your noise about ‘nzogbu nzogbu’ dances and cutlasses sounds more like a desperate attempt to paint a whole people with a brush of fear and division. Calm down. Loudness doesn’t equal truth. There are consequences for actions? Maybe the real consequence here is exposing how shallow and divisive tribal bigotry really is.
