Tim Godfrey Says Gospel Artists Deserve To Be Paid For Their Work by voiceoftheupcom(op): 6:27am On Oct 11, 2025
Popular Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter Tim Godfrey has spoken out in defence of gospel artists who charge fees for performances, insisting that ministry deserves value just like any other professional field.

In a recent post shared on his official social media pages, the “Nara” crooner expressed disappointment at the mindset that gospel musicians should perform for free simply because their work is spiritually driven.

“It’s wrong for people to assume that gospel artists shouldn’t be paid,” he wrote. “Being in ministry doesn’t mean you should work without fair compensation.” Eyes of Lagos reports,

“I Was Once Paid with Yams and a Live Chicken” – Tim Godfrey Recalls Early Struggles

Reflecting on his early years in gospel music, Tim Godfrey shared that he often performed at church events where he was compensated with food items instead of money.

“There were times I finished performing, and they would hand me a few tubers of yam or even a live chicken,” he revealed. “It was humiliating but defining. Those moments taught me the importance of valuing my craft.”

According to him, while he understands that ministry is service, times have changed, and it’s only fair that gospel artists are treated as professionals who invest time, skill, and resources into their work.
“Charging Fees Doesn’t Make Artists Less Spiritual”

Tim Godfrey firmly rejected the notion that gospel singers who charge for performances are “money-driven.”

“Charging a fee doesn’t make you unspiritual,” he said. “We invest a lot — from rehearsals, travel expenses, equipment, and production — and all these require funding. It’s about balance, not greed.”

He questioned why churches and fans are quick to criticise gospel artists for demanding payment, yet they gladly pay secular performers far higher fees for similar events.
A Call for Professionalism in the Gospel Industry

The award-winning gospel star emphasized that the church must learn to balance ministry and professionalism, especially as the gospel industry continues to grow globally.

He urged pastors, event organizers, and music directors to recognize gospel singers as both ministers and creative professionals deserving of honour and fair pay.

“Honouring gospel artists financially isn’t just about rewarding their talent,” he said. “It’s an investment in the future of Christian music in Nigeria and beyond.”

Tim Godfrey’s Lasting Message: Value the Work, Not Just the Worship

Tim Godfrey concluded his message by reminding Christians that valuing gospel artists financially helps sustain their ministries and encourages excellence within the community of faith-based musicians.

“Excellence requires investment,” he added. “If we want gospel music to thrive, we must support those who create it — both spiritually and financially.”

Monetizing the gospel of Chriat is wrong.

Christ Oyakhilome started paying them heavy fee cos he thought he was encouraging them, not knowing that he was making them businessmen of the gospel. Lol. It was too late before he realised it.

As a musician, if his talent is only making music, he can find other ways to monetize his gift like teaching, recording, or even use digital means. So, does it mean that all the money he has been making on digital platforms isn't enough for him that he wants to collect money while ministering on God's altars? He wants to collect money while the pastor preaching should give it out freely? So, why do they use the word "ministering" when they still want to collect money?

Well, I think he doesn't really know Christ. You cannot know Christ and charge money while ministering for Him. It is not possible.

hmmm this topic would always trend, but lets be honest small, this guys pour in so much energy into this the likes of mercy chinwo, bidemi, dunsin, nathaniel bassey, instrumentalists like victor mosugu, benjamin james, bassmatics, koko bass, marcus hassan, smj and so much more, this guys are good at what they do, if na you wey dey talk say why can't he do it free, have you priced drumstick before, its not cheap ooh, not to talk of studio session, a little something here and there to support their ministry would be nice, make we dey honest, they rehearse and perfect this things for you and i to have a good time in church
Re: Tim Godfrey Says Gospel Artists Deserve To Be Paid For Their Work by ARISHEM:
He is right. Everybody can sing but not everyone is ready to sacrifice and give their time and energy during practice, plan and actual performance.
You invite a gospel artiste from the east to come and minister to your church in the west and after he is done you send him back empty handed with only the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. That is not good.
As another example he gave you the estimated price and quote which includes cost of travel, feeding, other expenses and other gifts. You reply that he is not dedicated that he should minus all the other gifts as you can only cover only his travel, feeding and expenses.
If that is so there are many churches and occasions in his neighborhood that can afford that so why wasting his time.

If you are a gospel artiste - Yes
If you are a gospel minister- No.

Therefore, being a gospel artiste, Tim is entitled to his wages.

All are after the monetary benefits

The question is that is he ministering to get paid? Or to fulfill Jesus' command to give it out freely? What is the main motive behind ministering in churches?

Tim Godfrey is worse. As in, I strongly believe he doesn't know Christ. Why? Even you use his music on Twitter, he reports you and gets your account banned. He wants users on Twitter to pay him for copyright too. That is the highest nonsense I can ever imagine. Then, why sing for Christ? The money he is making on YouTube and other platforms aren't enough for him that he is blocking people who want to spread tje gospel through his music because he thinks he is the owner. Wow.

If he is the owner of his talent, why then say ge gives it all to Christ? Why say he is ministering?

Think about it.

No one who knows Christ closely and is walking in divine provision will ever collect money to minister in churches. As in collect money? No way. Ask any spirit filled person. He can defend himself and be right using this world's standard and list all his expenses. He can be right. But is he right with Christ? He doesn't still understand divine provison and walking with Christ. He isn't a Christian. He is a circular entertainer.
Re: Tim Godfrey Says Gospel Artists Deserve To Be Paid For Their Work by Kukutente23:
There's absolutely nothing wrong with earning from your talents and spirirual gifts
Only hypocrites and oppressive people think otherwise

Jesus Christ in Matthew 10 and Luke 10 said "a labourer is worthy of his wages". Also in same Matthew 10, Jesus said anyone who gives his disciples a cup of water in his name will not lose the reward

Most importantly, Jesus in Matthew 25 gave a parable of the talents where people are expected to trade with their talents to earn more yield. And in that same chapter, Jesus Christ listed one of the conditions for making heaven to be taking care of his disciples.

So if you are a follower of Christ who wants to make heaven, you should know that there's nothing wrong in taking care of those who work in God's vineyard and nothing wrong in them making a living off God's work just as God himself instituted for the Levites in the old Testament

Do you read the article at all?

Are you in Jesus era? Why not use donkey used during Jesus to travel from Onitsha to Lagos or from.Lagos to Abidjan and let's see?

Read the article again you will get his message. I naturally don't like how money took over the Gospel but at some point it is a necessity but should not be excessive as we witness today.

Was there a time they were never paid? This people has been cashing out from inception. What we have this days iss even jamboree. The message is not centered on christ. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is now a gospel artist because of the financial rewards that follows.

Then your pastor must be a fool for collecting offering, tithes, first fruit fee and money for deliverance. Haven't you read in the Bible where it says that "a man deserves his wages". He spends money to make the songs you cruise to and you're condemning him. Tell your scam of a pastor to stop collecting offering and tithes and see if he will close his church. Okoro like you

Yes, I know some do it. Not all. All the pastors who do such do not know Christ intimately again. The funny thing is that the Holy Christ may even still use them....that's the funny issue. But in my experience, the contract expires when their replacements launched out. The time of "grace" don sail across. Grace can be long. And when the person repents, mercy will erase the consequences like nothing happened.

So, they aren't doing the will of Christ selling the gospel. It isn't Christlike.

Money made from streaming on social media alone shows they need not to be paid.
Why can’t they use those money for investment of their skills?

What will the Church pay Evangelists and Soul winners? Prayer warriors closed shops for days to pray for the success of the music ministration before artists play, how much is their share because the aim is spiritual and not canal exaltation.

Any gospel artist that charges for a ministration is no different from a secular musician.

You don't charge for God's blessings and miracles, they are free.
Re: Tim Godfrey Says Gospel Artists Deserve To Be Paid For Their Work by UkoAnnang(m):
wink

Just like Nigerian secular musicians these guys who called themselves gospel musicians are another noisemakers.

The likes of Fanny Crossby who composed over four thousand hyms used in churches all over the world today were not paid nor demanding for payment from their works.

Charles Wesley and his brother John were not paid
Ira Sankey
Isaac Waat
Arthur Sullivan
Williams Fisk
And other noble hymns composers whose music can sooth the soul at every tune were not paid for their works but yet there were happy doing it for humanity. Their works lasted for generations.

Other high classic composers whose works are used for important occasions like Queens and King coronations in the Western world were not paid. The likes of;
George Frederich Handel's
Joan Sebastian
Anthonio
Joseph Hayden
Beethoven
Mozart

And here, these noisemakers whose music got expired every 3 months are asking for payment.

I love my my Catholic faith
Every Sunday and other church activities we sang from our hymn books no noise

MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MORE MONEY

We worship money more than God

Churches today preach about money money money money.

You guys are worshipping Mamooth the demigod of money.
You are not worshipping the true God

Many lower demons masquerading as "God"
So as to collect praise and worship energy from the gullible masses..

I raised my nephew to stop going to church
Taught him how to find God within himself
And not through dogma and doctrines

Whenever you see moneyoney vibes in Christianity just know they are worshipping Mamooth a demon of wealth

These demons want to be worship like God.

Soul winners and evangelists get souls but they don't do it full time. If they do, they should get paid.

Why should anyone close shop for days because you are praying for a program? Is my God deaf?
