A heavily pregnant widow accused of shoplifting has been banished from Ugbema community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.

It was gathered that community elders reportedly ordered the expulsion of the woman who recently lost her husband.

According to eyewitnesses, the woman had allegedly been stealing small items from shops to feed herself, her young son, and her unborn baby.

Her luck ran out on Saturday, October 10, 2025 when local youths apprehended her and subjected her to public punishment under the scorching sun.

Sources claim that community elders later directed the youths to escort her out of the area as punishment for her actions.

Many residents have condemned the action, stressing that the woman needs assistance, not humiliation, given her condition.

While I don't support stealing in any way, the elders of that community are not sensible enough to have meted out such punishment to her.

It's on a poor, helpless widow they can show their power. Instead of them to support her.

They should rather save and use that energy to defend themselves against the Fulani herdsmen that have been terrorizing their communities from time to time.

This is cruel. Federal government should Investigate this matter and lock up the community leaders if necessary. Nobody should be banished from their community for food theft, let alone a widowed mother who's trying to feed her little son and unborn child.
