Get an existing building material seller and plead with them to do an apprenticeship of 3 months or more. That way you will learn the basics and ins and outs of the business.
Get the right education through apprenticeship and the you can answer your own question by yourself.

Go learn the trade or related trade first before talking of budget

Guy don't listen to anyone that tells you against starting a business, my story is almost same as yours and to the glory of God now, there is huge difference in my life financially...

He is not wise at all 1.2m for shop alone that's not wise for a business you are just starting

i keep asking similar question but people wont give realistic and practical response.... also am asking from the perspective of what of a government employer that is only available weekends and closing hours (say 6pm) upwards. i would really appreciate if i can get a doable advice

Find an ibo guy doing the same business around ur environs.. Stay with him for 3 months to learn the business. U will answer every questions yourself

It will, dedicated, and not taking much from the business is key , I know someone bwho sleeps in his shop ,because re refuses to pay rent from his business
