Nigerian rap legend and music executive, M.I Abaga, has sparked discussion online after declaring that Nigeria remains “the best place to raise children” — citing the nation’s deep sense of community and strong family values as key reasons. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

In a recent interview, the “One Naira” crooner reflected on how Nigeria’s close-knit social culture creates a supportive environment that shapes responsible and emotionally balanced children.

“There’s something about growing up in Nigeria — the way family, neighbours, and friends all look out for one another. That bond gives children a foundation money can’t buy,” he said.

Contrasting Life Abroad

M.I Abaga, who has spent time both in Nigeria and overseas, compared the country’s communal lifestyle to the more individualistic culture in Western nations like the United States.

He noted that while living abroad offers exposure and comfort, the pressure of demanding jobs and fast-paced routines often makes it difficult for parents to spend quality time with their children.

“In America, many parents are busy working, sometimes holding multiple jobs. The system doesn’t allow that same extended family structure we have here. In Nigeria, even your neighbour helps raise your child,” M.I explained.

Nigeria’s Advantage: Cultural and Emotional Intelligence

The award-winning rapper emphasized that Nigeria’s family-oriented society naturally instills empathy, resilience, and a sense of identity in children from a young age. He believes these cultural values are critical in developing emotionally intelligent and socially grounded individuals.

According to M.I, “Growing up here teaches you to care for others, to adapt, and to stay connected to your roots — things that can get lost when children are raised abroad without that cultural grounding.”
Balancing Cultures and Values

Though M.I Abaga admitted that he’s not yet making concrete family plans, he revealed that he envisions a balanced upbringing for his future kids — one that merges Nigerian cultural roots with global exposure.

“I’d love for my kids to grow up here first, to understand who they are and where they come from. Later, they can experience the world, study abroad, and gain that global perspective — but with a Nigerian foundation,” he shared.

The guy is right this may be one of the reasons they easily get depressed over there, when you have no one to relate with,share your joy and sad moment with and eventually commit suicide or go for mass shooting.

This is where we Africans especially Nigerians should still be grateful to God for having a society where we have family settings and friends we can lean on in time of challenges and share our happy and challenging moments with.

And I pray this Western way of life that is creeping in gradually will not completely take away this commendable family settings.
