Paying Gratuity is still a thing in Nigeria.

Gratuity is actually your entitlement withheld during service and paid in bulk upon exit.

Though not applicable in the UK where you get paid your monthly salary and your pension remains intact until you reach retirement age.

But this university has lots of explaining to do, otherwise this is modern slavery.

By the way, God does not own any University. And if He wanted to own one, it can’t be situated in Nigeria!

I think most people keep confusing gratuity with pension. Contributory pension scheme is a law in Nigeria, it would have built up over the years and belongs to the employee.

For 14 years, he could have millions already sitting in his contributory pension account and he will take it in tranches while the balance keeps Compounding.

It makes no sense to insult the employer when you are completely ignorant of how pension works.

That retiring employee deserves to be sanctioned for releasing this information without stating the amount in his contributory pension. He probably did it to embarrass his employers and that's disloyalty.

My take?
I doubt if the person could have been earning N12, 750 per month.

I strongly suspect one of 2 things;

1. That the person has outstanding loans that has been deducted before this cheque was handed over.

2. The whole post may just be for generating online views.

Covenant University Sacked Several Staff Without Paying Their Benefits. One Has Now Died

Maybe Joseph Olugbuyiro, a Professor of Natural Product Chemistry whose appointment was terminated by Ogun State-based Covenant University (CU) in 2024, would not have died if his gratuity had been paid on time.

Olugbuyiro’s LinkedIn page showed that he joined Covenant University in October 2005 and was disengaged in September 2024. He died on May 11.

His death might not be directly linked to the unpaid entitlements withheld by the university he served for nearly two decades. However, given that he died eight months after his disengagement, without receiving compensation, his loved ones wonder if things might have turned out differently had he been paid.

Apart from Professor Olugbuyiro, some other staff members’ appointments were terminated in September 2024 with immediate effect. February saw the termination of even more appointments.

APPOINTMENT TERMINATION AND WITHHELD BENEFITS
Some of the disengaged workers believe that the university made the decision to terminate staff contracts just to cut costs. An affected staff member who did not want to be named told FIJ that they had learnt the school needed to let a few people go so it could afford the new national minimum wage.

So, in early September, the first batch received termination of appointment letters, and it took immediate effect. They were to leave their quarters on or before the last day of the month.

One of the letters obtained by FIJ stated that the school disengaged the workers as a result of organisational restructuring.

FIJ understands that the former workers are not opposed to the university’s decision. Their concern lies in the delayed payment of terminal benefits and “sharp practices”, in the form of deductions, that often leave the final pay-out embarrassingly small.

ILLEGAL DEDUCTIONS
“Laying off staff is not a new thing with CU. It’s done regularly, but the major one was in 2018, which was targeted at staff members who had clocked 60. That was the first major layoff, and it affected about 70 staff members, both faculty (teaching) and non-teaching staff,” a source disclosed.

The source continued: “After COVID, there was another layoff in 2020. Then, in September 2024 and February 2025, another round of disengagements was carried out. It was the Board of Regents that directed management to reduce staff strength so they could implement the minimum wage.

“I don’t know the exact number of staff affected in total, but from what I have heard, it should be a little over 100 between the two batches.”

According to the university’s 2004 conditions of service, if an employee spends up to 10 years before exiting, their terminal benefit would be calculated by multiplying their most recent monthly gross pay by 10. For those who had served 15 years, the calculation would be the most recent monthly gross pay multiplied by 15 plus an additional one-month gross pay as a long service bonus.

However, during the first round of layoffs in 2018, which affected about 70 staff members, the university’s board abrogated the 2004 condition of service and introduced a new policy — the 2019 condition of service. Under this new policy, effective from January 2019, terminal benefits came with new clauses.

- While the university would continue pension contributions, terminal benefits would only be calculated up to December 2018. So, whenever a staff member exited after this policy change, their terminal benefits would be computed based on their service up to December 2018.
- The university would also deduct the total pension contributions it had made up to that point from the terminal benefits before paying the balance.

“They will calculate whatever CU has contributed to the person’s pension fund up to 2018 and deduct it from the terminal benefits before they pay what is left. They implemented that law on those who were laid off then, and a few were angry. By the time they made the deductions, someone even had around N7,000 left,” a source told FIJ.

When Dr Durodola Daniel, one of the workers sacked in 2018, found that he would be getting N4.5 million instead of N6.2 million due to the pension deduction, he took the university to the Industrial Court.

FIJ found that a judgment was pronounced in 2022, in which Justice Dele Peters, the presiding judge, declared the pension deduction from Daniel’s gratuity as “wrongful, illegal and having no basis both in law and equity”.

The Industrial Court ordered Covenant University to pay Daniel the full sum of N6,234,380 as gratuity; N406,590 as long service bonus, N1 million as general damages and N200,000 as cost of action with immediate effect.

A source told FIJ that “They (Covenant University) paid him his full terminal benefits within one week of that judgment. We were even jubilating because we thought it would apply to other affected workers. But despite the court order, they still deducted that money from the benefits of others. They claimed that the court judgment only applied to the person who took them to court.”

FIJ gathered that the university will equally implement this pension deduction, earlier declared illegal by the Industrial Court, on the set of workers whose services were disengaged in September and February.

In the 2023 Edition of its Staff Handbook and Conditions of Service, the university said that the “award of gratuity shall be based on merit to deserving members of staff at the discretion of the Board of Regents”.

Given that these affected members of staff were let go because of “organisational restructuring” and not as a result of any kind of misconduct, they expect to get their gratuities or terminal benefits.

Section 14.2 of the document also states: The position of the Pension Reform Act (PRA) 2014 shall be considered in the computation of an officer’s entitlement such that the employer’s contribution up to December 2018 shall be deducted from the officer’s gratuity.

An officer’s entitlement at the cessation of his/her appointment shall be paid to him only net of whatever cost is outstanding against him to the University, as will be made known to him as soon as notice of cessation is given.
