Hello Nairalanders,

I'm really frustrated, tired and confused about the whole issue.

The prepaid metre in my apartment is misbehaving seriously. This is a new metre that was bought three years ago when the house was built by the landlord. We are just four occupants. One of the apartments has a room and parlor, while the other Three apartments are just a room self-con each.

We've being recharging the metre since all this while, but last week, I recharged and token was not sent to me. I still recharged again to confirm if it was network issues, but same thing happened. No Token was Received by me. The response I got was our metre is owing. How come?
How is our metre owing?

The kind of Prepaid Metre we have isn't the one you recharge on. There's a device like a calculator/POS terminal that uses battery. That's what we use whenever we want to recharge. The battery part of it isn't even working, we have to plug it to the socket before we can ON it and dial the token to recharge. The challenge is that, if we allow the whole units in the metre to completely run out or get exhausted and the light goes off, we will have to go to our neighbors' houses to plug it and recharge, and we must not go too far from our apartment, if not, it wouldn't work.

How do we resolve this issue because the units there would soon be exhausted completely

Go to the nearest customer service in your area for resolution, or do you want help with the location too?

Try another app if Opay cannot generate tokens for you.

I stopped using Opay long ago when they gave me token I couldn't load.

Take your meter number and go to the nearest PHCN, it will be resolved.

Two things, either someone is bypassing the metre or most of these meters come with outstanding which needs to be cleared if na new meter as you said.

The option you have now is to go to Nepa office and negotiate with them so that any time you or your neighbours recharge the meter, 50% of the amount you recharged will be used to generate token for you while the remain 50% will go into debt recovery.


Now if it turns out that someone is bypassing in that house upon investigation, NEPA will fine you guys nothing less than 50k and you must pay up all the debt accumulated during the bypass

You can chat their customer care on WhatsApp and get directions on how to fix, or guidance if you need to come to the office.
They even send people to your house to fix it in less than 3 days.

Go to the DISCO office with your meter card/meter number to confirm your indebtedness and the way forward to resolving it.

Gi to Nepa office snd do the needful. Dnt call any electrician to do it for u b4 those SPIDERS BOYS dat carty 🪜 🪜 🪜 up/down com accused u of tampering/do illegal things..

2, maybe ur agent(the peep u paid to didn't remitted the money to Nepa,hence,ur debit.

You should be more ashamed of yourself cos we didn't contact u to help us recharge it.

The meter has an outstanding bill or preload units and they will not generate new token until the balance is cleared. It happend to me recently.

The way some of you talk on this platform, most times I wonder how you were brought up.

If I knew the solution to this, would I have brought it here?
What if it's something minor that can be fixed by the suggestions I get from here?

I clearly understand what you are saying, I am currently using the same metre, I think your point is about plugin the metre before you can recharge it.

You can still call a technician to help you connect it permanently to the metre through the side that you plugin in the charging wire. That is what I did. just to attach wire to the metre and there will be light to press in the units numbers. No need of going to NEPA. :

Call the customer care of the Disco or visit their office. Abuja Disco is not on nairaland

To the OP

Find out if the house was on direct connection before the meter was installed if it was then it means the house had some outstanding which is now transferred to the meter sometimes after installing..From experience on direct connection the billing system is different and any outstanding is calculated and prorated.

I don't think so. Have heard cases like this before and it's not cos of outstanding balance. The am stress of carrying it to another place before you load especially if it finish at night or midnight is annoying.

once your unit is exhausted, if its the type with battery, you'll have to insert battery and plug the cord to the socket on the wall before typing your token as to be able to recharge. you wont need to go to a neighbors 'place.
If you go to your Disco office, you will confirm why you have negative balance.
