The Handshake That Was Meant To Prevent The Civil War- Picture by gidgiddy(op):
January 1967

Gowon and Ojukwu meet in Aburi, Ghana, at the Hill top Mansion of the President of Ghana, General Joe Ankrah

Civil war is looming and both men meet to prevent it. They agree on the terms Nigeria will continue with as one country "during the period of Military rule".

Both men sign the agreement in front of General Ankrah, then shake hands. This agreement is now historically known as "The Aburi Accord"

When they return to Nigeria, Gowon breaks the agreement by enacting Decree 14 and 15. Ojukwu responds with the declaration of Biafra

Civil war follows

Even though Gowon is a scoundrel, but I still blame Zik for not going forward to balkanize Nigeria when the opportunity presented itself.

Gowon did not owe a defeated Biafra anything. When two nations or two people fight the lower in this case Biafra does not have any right to dictate any terms. So to hell me Biafra n Aburi accord.

If the Aburi accord was so valid make Ojukwu enforce. A foolish man beaten blueblack can not tell who as beaten his foolish soul to death how to share the profit he was beaten for.

You clearly don't know anything about the Biafran War and the moral discipline that guided Ojukwu and the Igbos.
Ojukwu had every opportunity to win the war.
For your info, France and several foreign interests were willing to recognize and support Biafra fully with weapons, machinery and troops in exchange for oil. Yet, Ojukwu refused to compromise the future of the minorities or sell out the Eastern Region for foreign gain.

He could have turned the struggle into a purely Igbo agenda but he chose to protect the unity and dignity of all the peoples under Biafra, including the minorities .
That decision wasn’t foolishness, it was a display of conscience and leadership that valued justice over victory.

So, while some of you with limited knowledge may boast about defeating Biafra, history will remember that Ojukwu and the Igbos fought with honour and restraint. They had the means to win but chose not to betray their values and that’s something no amount of military triumph can erase.....

If they ask you that as a Yoruba man you are, can you write in one or two paragraphs what Igbos did to you personally that warrant the kind of hatred you harbor for Igbos, can you?

You are wasting your precious time and energy hating people that hold no grudge against you.

It is Igbos that ought to be showing complete disdain towards you because:

1.) They noticed our inability to live in peace and made attempt to secede for peace to reign, but you instead joined forces with Northern Nigeria backed by Britain/Egypt/Arab Nations/USSR to fight them and force them to rejoin your Nigerian union that refused to work

2.) You and majority of your people have been doing everything humanly possible to stop an Igbo person from becoming Nigeria's President.

3.) You use politics of division and treachery to corner all the goodies that comes from Nigeria's central government to your region and also mock Igbos for coming to your region after using federal politics of gangup with the North to corner national resources and infrastructures to your region (Lagos).

4.) A man from your region is President and continues to hold Nnamdi Kanu fighting for freedom and equal treatment for his people, instead of your brother to wash off his hands from Buhari's mistakes and release him to go, he continues to hold him, ask yourself if an Igbo person as President is doing this how would you and your people feel?

5.) Your tribesman who is the President has shown so much disdain and neglect to Igbos and Southeast without remorse or shame in all he does yet to people like you, it is normal

6.) In 1970 when the civil war ended, a Yoruba man, Awolowo headed the economic and financial team of the Nigerian federal government that seized every money Igbos had in Nigerian banks before the civil war started and only handed Igbos with proof of having an account in Nigerian banks just 20 pounds no matter how many thousands or millions they had in bank before the war broke out. My father said he had over 700 pounds saved in a Nigerian bank before the war broke out because he was a young unmarried civil servant saving massively to build a house and buy a Volkswagen beetle before getting married and then the civil war broke out and he lost all and after the war ended, Awolowo's policy made him got only 20 pounds and sacked from Nigeria's civil service job. He started from scratch again in 1970.

7.) Awolowo also brought the starvation policy during the civil war that led to heartbreaking starvation and hunger in Biafra during the war which led to deaths of millions of Igbo civilians, mostly children and elderly, which forced Biafra elites to beg Ojukwu to please surrender to save Igbo children from further dying of hunger.

These are just but a few of atrocities your people committed against Igbos as a whole that affected virtually every Igbo person, now tell me why you despise the Igbos so much that you always speak with bitterness even on casual topics that don't warrant such bitterness?

To add to what you said.

USSR approached Ojukwu with an offer to help Biafra win the war in exchange for being in charge of Old Eastern Nigeria's crude oil for 30 years, Ojukwu refused and said Biafra will win the war without foreign military assistance.

On the other hand, Gowon sold Bakassi Peninsula an oil rich peninsula to Cameroon in exchange for military and economic help.

That didn't stop there.

Gowon entered into an unholy matrimony of decades with British Government to help them win the war in exchange of Nigeria's crude oil which they controlled for decades via British Petroleum (BP), Shell, etc.

Chigozie, for once be proud of your region. Before the amalgamation, the Northern Nigeria were millions of miles ahead your region. Most of your leaders, heroes from your region benefited from the North so go and pack somewhere.

There was nothing like Yoruba territory my friend.

You guys should stop saying that thrash that have been debunked several times.

During war, warring nations focus on capturing the capital city, the seat of government to end the war fast because once you are able to capture the seat of power, your opponents will surrender unconditionally most times.

Go and read about the fall of Berlin.

Go and read about the battle of Stalingrad during world war II.

Are you aware that Hitler already captured and took over several USSR (today's Russia) territories but he ordered his war generals to match straight to Moscow to capture the capital of USSR then and that was his greatest undoing because winter caught up with German troops who were not prepared for the extreme winter weather. Their military vans had radiator issues, tire failures, they had serious logistics issues and USSR then used the time to regroup from several territories and pushed Germany back and that was how Germany fell.

So Ojukwu ordered his generals to match straight to Lagos to capture Lagos the seat of power so that Gowon could flee to Kaduna and surrender.

And you know, there is no way soldiers fighting a serious war will just trek peacefully to their main destination without encountering pockets of resistance even from locals which would definitely lead to destruction and of course loss of lives and properties.

And mind you, Yorubas joined Nigeria to fight Biafra from day one, not as if they joined because Biafra troops got close to Ore.

They were actively part of Nigerian military and Awolowo was already appointed Minister of Finance by Gowon, meaning Yorubas already joined the war from the start.

So stop listening to those mills and boom stories you were told
Re: The Handshake That Was Meant To Prevent The Civil War- Picture by Bmaster(m): 9:36pm On Oct 16, 2025
Lagos is a no man land in the sense that it wasn't made to be by a particular region,it was the collective effort and sweat of Nigerians that made Lagos !

Just like Abuja is being built today, maybe in 50 years to come the Arewas may start feeling funky about being the owners of Abuja in its entirety, including the infrastructures being built on it

Exactly, the Igbos are indeed a mystery. Even the Europeans were astonished when they first encountered them — they wondered how a people so capable with every advantage to conquer and dominate others around them, instead chose to allow others the right to identity, dignity and independence something even the colonial powers themselves could not practice.

The Igbos chose death over slavery and that unyielding spirit made them targets of the white man’s resentment, a sentiment that still lingers today.[m

Among Nigeria’s major ethnic groups, the Igbos stand out as the only one that didn't build empires or kingdoms on the blood of neighboring minorities. This single trait defines their uniqueness and enduring moral strength.

Stop making it look like the neck of SE is tied to Nigeria like Sallah ram.

Why did your leaders chickened out when Buhari wanted to give you your 5states Biafra,?

Why did your leaders ran to Arewa to beg when ultimatum was given to SE to vacate the north?

Why did many of you including your leaders got jittery when a random Twitter asked you to leave SW?

Nothing in the character of an Igbo man show he want to leave Nigeria
