How suspected coup plotters planned to kill Tinubu, Shettima, other top officials – Premium Times

Top intelligence sources have revealed how some disgruntled military officers allegedly planned a coup to overthrow President Bola Tinubu in a plot that security officials describe as one of the most audacious threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how about 20 officers were arrested and detained for planning to stage the coup.

A top military source familiar with the development told this newspaper that the plot caused tension in the government, forcing the presidency to cancel the National Independence Day parade usually done on 1 October.

However, an investigative panel has been set up to probe the officers involved.

25th October
According to insider accounts, the coup planners scheduled 25 October to strike.

That was the tentative date,” the source said. “If things did not work out that day, they will continue plotting.”

The Independence Day parade would have been observed, according to our sources.

“The parade could have been held since the arrests were made before 01 October, but the government did not want to take risk since it was a military ceremony,” another officer said.

There are no clear details about the identities of the officers involved yet.

‘Tinubu, Shettima , others targeted for assasination’

Key officials targeted for assasination include President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, our source said.

There are other people targeted,” the source noted. “But those are the key targets.”

“They also planned to arrest top military officers, including the service chiefs,” he continued. “They did not want to kill them.”

The coup planners wanted to assassinate these officials simultaneously. “They were targeting the day that all of them would be in the country. Wherever they were, they would be assassinated,” he added.

Our source said the plotters worked with informants in the Presidential Villa and around those marked for assasination.

“They have people in the villa that monitor movements of these officials,” he said. “They wanted to kill them at the same time and install a military government.”

Neither the presidency nor the military has commented about this development, but the plot created tension both in the government and military ranks.

In a statement dated 4 October, the Defence Headquarters spokesperson Tukur Gusau, a brigadier-general, said the arrested officers “were being investigated for indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”

Mr Gusau added that preliminary findings indicated that the officers’ grievances stemmed from “career stagnation and failure in promotion examinations.”

Why Military Coup Is Hard in Nigeria

I once asked a recently retired Major General in the Nigerian Army why coups no longer happen easily in Nigeria. He explained that things changed drastically after the attempted coup that nearly claimed the life of former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida.

According to him, the military intelligence system was completely overhauled after that incident. It became so advanced, sophisticated, and deeply embedded across all security units that planning or executing a coup today is almost impossible without being detected early.

That’s why, since that time, Nigeria hasn’t witnessed a single successful coup.

He said Babangida called Abacha to save him that it was Abacha that saved him from the shame and what later happened was agreement between him and Abacha.

Say Babangida was under one underground road at Dodan Barracks Lagos that the Military already took over and Abacha sent thousands of troops from outside to come in when he sent save our soul to Abacha

After the coup, Babangida immediately took FCT to North where he feels safer .
Tinubu can run it to Lagos where he feels safer too.

How can humans ever envisage of planning a coup against the demigod without him knowing before hand.

The problem with humans is that, they always fail to acknowledge the powers, reach dominance and political tentacles of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR)

It’s okay to be inspired by others that might have happened in Africa, but not okay when you fail to acknowledge the force you up against in your own case.

It is just a reflection of what the chaos Nigeria has been engulfed in today. No government but a directionless tottering of the nation from one dangerous precipice to another.

Any coup at this point will be the end of Nigeria. We either practice democracy or we go our way. The era of illegitimate northern rule through military coup is over.

Again, President Tinubu needs to fast track the reform of the military. The military must be decentralized with military equipment equally shared to the six regions. The era of over concentration of military weapons in the north must come to an end immediately.

A coup d' etat can happen in various ways, but tye real problem is that the army is too comfortable right now. No serious threats, just rag tag militia and small guerilla terrorists.

The military is not loosing its officers rather the NCOs are the ones taking the hit. They won't lift a finger yet and the people are yet to openly revolt against the government. It's not a perfect time to stage a coup, it will not gain support. That time will come.

The military intelligence is not intelligent enough to stop a coup. The military is corrupt and have joined the military industrial complex.

LOL... That's a very poor way to reason. You assume the military too won't be corrupt but theirs has always been worse, besides, those ones can decide to start picking anyone who says anything against them online and offline, freedom of speech, gone!

We've had coups happen in Nigeria before, in fact in the 70s and 80s it was the order of the day, so it's something that has been done and never yielded any result. The solution is for us to make sure we hold whoever is elected accountable. If they don't want to hear word, use social media, protest, votes and your voice to fight for yourself.

If there's any Truth in this then, tinubu no go escape it. The North doesn't renege and make no mistake this decision is a popular desire by the majority of the people in core north. That's why they need to release nnamdi kanu now before the shit hit the fan.

But I don't even feel sorry for tinubu no matter what happens later. He had the guts to remove the governor of a state under the guise of state of emergency just to perpetuate his political interest. He deserves what ever he gets
