If they don't make mathematics mandatory, more governors will not be able to read budget figures like we saw in Edo state.

Is this story true, one of my friend's children has been rejoicing that he need not to pass Mathematics, but now FG is REVERSING itself. Tinubu's government is low on capacity to manage this country, but they will tell us, we hate Nigeria. grin grin grin grin grin angry
Federal Government did not reverse anything. They only clarified that students my write Mathematics as student must write Civic, but to gain admission, Mathematics is Not Compulsory.
Summary:
It is compulsory to add Mathematics to you subjects but not compulsory to pass it. Simple.

Mathematics is compulsory everywhere in the world. It's English Language that can be paired with other Languages if at all there's going to be reform in the subjects.

Mathematics has no rival o.
You people just read headlines. Your comment is proof
Where in the write-up shows that it is compulsory to pass maths? Read again.
Summary:
FG has said all students must register maths but not compulsory to pass it. Credit in Maths is NO LONGER Compulsory.
That's is the summary. Probably you need to take your time to read not just the headline.
Thanks

I believe that the minister of education has relatives that are very weak in mathematics and they have been begging him to do something that will make them gain admission. Now it has backfired. The fool is trying to save face. Idiotic people in government
I bet you only read the headline. Didn't you?

This is what u get when appointment is given to people not on merit but base on politics.
I bet you only read the headline.
Oya, wise one, summarize what was said in the write up and see whether you IQ read those politicians in office. Most of them are far read than you

and what is the usefulness of mathematics to Art students. Am not saying they shouldn't offer it. But what is the usefulness. Should be compulsory for Science and Business students in High school but for Arts it is worthless making it compulsory. Art' student don't need to apply maths in their field. Even the measurement dey will need it is just basic maths. Nowhere in the world they will apply set or modular arithmetic

You're ignorant of the reality of the implications and I doubt if you attended secondary school. If you tell me that a subject is compulsory but not needed for my post-secondary school education, it's as good as useless as the p in psychology.

The relevance to admission is the most important. Students who want to pursue Mathematics/engineering-related courses in UNILAG must take Further Mathematics in secondary school yet Further Mathematics is not even compulsory for STEM in Nigeria.

The seriousness students give to Mathematics is because it is compulsory both in secondary school and for university students admission, it is not because it is compulsory in secondary schools.

APC government and confusion are like 5 and 6. After the president have pardoned drug Lords and criminals, later they said they are reviewing the action. They said mathematics is not required, and now they are saying another thing .

Confused people.

Low level thinkers. They don't even know what they want to do.

Copy paste people

That's why the country is always looking like it is.
They re not confused. What govt said is misquoted. Govt didn't say you shouldn't take maths in Ọ level exam. But what they mean is that admitting student in university/polytechnic/colleges of education for art courses will not require credit pass in maths.

So what the govt is saying is that maths and English are compulsory courses to be taken by all students taking o level exams

Mathematics shouldn't be seen as just a subject, it's a way of life. Every now and then, we are faced with making critical decisions. Being just a little bit sound in math helps with making the right ones.

Read through, nothing reversed
I have read through and there's something reversed.
You and I know this is a damage control thing and not what they stated there. Someone came up with an I'll thought idea of removing maths from subject in the name of Art students for o levels, the person is now reversing itself after realising the blunder, now because the person does not want to sound foolish he's telling you he only removed it as an admission criteria and not as a o level subject.
Has mathematics ever been a compulsory requirement for someone who wants to study history before?

I was watching a judge decide on a case on youtube a couple of years back and had to quickly calculate the backlog child support of a man whose wife sued him..... And the judge made a small mistake....but the father that wasn't even using calculator picked it immediately and corrected the judge who was now trying to be fvnny that she never liked maths in school and chose a path that they said ddnt require much maths but alas!!! She's still not escaping math as she needs it every day on this job..

Your rebuttal cancelled out your own point. No need to drag with you. Mathematics is not needed for Arts inclined students. Simple.

If you can’t pass o levels maths, your parents wasted their money for fees . C grade is the minimum expectation of anyone that sent 6 years in secondary school.
Seems you stole my words here. When will these people realize that going to school is not mandatory when there are so many trades to be learned, for example:

Brick-layer, Carpentery, dishwasher, yam pounder, gate-man, dog bather, goat bather.

Instead they go and waste good money to educate some dunce and after six plus years, come out of the affair with nothing to show for all that money.

I sure hope that this is not true. It has got to be an especially narcissistic sociopath that is ready to mortgage the progress of the entire nation just so that the half-wits that he calls relatives can be squeezed into some positions.

It should have been this way; MATHS 1 ( simple maths for the arts) and MATHS 2( for science, tech ,engineering and Maths{ STEM} students). Then all are required to get a minimum of C grade in any maths subjects/course.
I kinda like this, but where will this put further mathematics and what will be it's content?

Further Maths can exist alongside the other MATHS. Making it optional like it's always been. It can also be made tougher than what it is in terms of contents.Introductory aspects of Topics such as; Laplace, Fourier and Z-transforms, complex analysis, Topology, Tensors can be integrated to Further Maths.

All these at the O'level, that's an overkill, but I agree with the essence of your suggestion sha. You make sense
