Lone Lagos Protester Joined by Others, Arrested During “Free Nnamdi Kanu” Demonstration

A lone protester in Lagos calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu was eventually joined by other sympathizers before being arrested on Monday, October 20, 2025. The incident unfolded on the same day as a larger, coordinated “Free Nnamdi Kanu” rally in Abuja, which ended in a violent clash between security forces and demonstrators.

The protest began with one man, identified as Declan Ihekaire, marching through the streets of Lagos while holding a placard that read, “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now! He’s Just a Freedom Fighter.” In videos circulating on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), Ihekaire could be seen chanting “Free Nnamdi Now!” as he walked alone before passersby began to join his march in solidarity.

Moments later, footage emerged showing police officers arresting Ihekaire, sparking outrage online. Many Nigerians criticized the arrest, arguing that he was peacefully exercising his right to protest without harming anyone.

Meanwhile, in Abuja, a separate and more organized protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore also took place. Security operatives reportedly fired tear gas and barricaded major roads to disperse the demonstrators, leading to several arrests.

Reacting to the incidents, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) condemned the protests, labeling them as politically motivated and orchestrated by opposition elements.

In response to growing tensions, the Nigerian Correctional Service declared all correctional facilities across the country as “Red Zones,” warning protesters to stay away from prison areas.

The demonstrations are part of a wider campaign demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who remains in detention facing terrorism-related charges.

Many Nigerians have continued to express their displeasure over the handling of the protests, calling for calm and the respect of citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful demonstration.

Wetin concern Lagos(The city he asked them to burn down) concern Nnamdi Kanu?

Abuja is the FCT and maybe protesting in his home state would make sense too, but what does he plan to resolve by protesting in Lagos?

Ironically, his brothers in his own region are all sitting at home today. So why disturb those unconnected to Kanu in a faraway region by attempting to cause traffic congestion for those going about their daily bread?

Good guy, even though I don't agree with what he is protesting for, but he is bothering, and he is doing something.

What manner of nonsense is this? You guys are not protesting the alliviation of poverty but protesting for the release of a terrorist who have killed Igbo women and children with his unguarded mouth. The mumuman called Sowore has cases in court that he should focus his attention on instead of distracting his equally mumufied zombies.

So, because Sowore cannot run back to his American home because his passport is seized by DSS he wants to burn down Nigeria to escape...kole work.

It's like there is no more hunger in the land, na person wey don chop bellefull dey protest to release terrorist. Some of them don't even know who dey are protesting for, when dey see people gathering for protest dey think it is time to pour out their frustration of hardship on the government.

I have my admiration for brave individuals. This is a daring move especially as a lone protester. Nigerians are known to chicken out instead of demanding accountability and resisting impunity from all arms of government

The lone protester want to trend as hero. Let him go and trend in the Police cell.

Majority of those supporting this protest, I am sure none of them have watched MNK's clips on how he instructed people to be violent and destructive.

Though, MNK's trial is taking too long, but he remains a terrorist and needs to be convicted.

TRUTH MUST BE TOLD!

Terrorist set up militia groups to kill innocent people, Nnamdi Kanu setup ESN a terrorist organization without any legal backing in a Sovereign Country Nigeria....That account alone is a treasonable offense.

Nnamdi Kanu is gone for good and cannot return, even if he kpai in detention NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. You guys will just mourn him for a few days and move on with your lives.

The current protest will make it much more easier for the government to kpai him.
