Very few African states were involved in selling slaves. All western European countries were involved in buying, capturing and enslaving people.

So how does that translate to Africans being more involved ?

The slaves who were being sold were war prisoners, not even local enslaved people (who had access to opportunities to become free men).
Rather prisoners of war who were likely to be executed were sold off as a way to exile them from the land.

The victors who were selling these war prisoners has no idea about the inhuman treatment the buyers reserved for them. If anything, it was assumed those guys would be citizens of white countries and never come back.

Bro, it is an old culture as old as humanity.
The Europeans sold captured enemies as slaves also - Romans, Spartans etc.
Arabs were very notorious in selling captured and defeated villages.
The movie Spartacus is a pointer.
Captured enemies were graded - strong ones to tend to citizens farms, some sold as slaves to tend to others farms elsewhere, the women are shared as spoilt of war, the ugly ones are turned to maids, the weak men are killed while the average guys are thrown into the rings to fight each other to death.
Life was/has never been easy. It is a continuous unending battle
