The Rivers State Government under His Excellency, Gov. Siminalayi Fubara has begun a total reconstruction of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia. The project, handled by Monimichelle Monimichelle Sports Facility Construction Ltd, a renowned indigenous company led by sports infrastructure expert Ebi Egbe , widely respected for delivering top-quality stadiums across Nigeria and Africa.

The scope of work covers every component of the facility, including the playing turf, drainage systems, seating areas, floodlights, and dressing rooms. The project is expected to be completed within eight months, ushering in a modern, safe, and spectator-friendly stadium.

This move reaffirms the Fubara-led administration’s commitment to sports development, youth engagement, and infrastructure renewal in Rivers State.

Yakubu Gowon Stadium (formerly Liberation Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium in the Elekahia suburb of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Rivers United F.C., formerly Dolphins F.C. The stadium has a capacity of 16,000. seater

In 2001, the newly built Stadium at Elekahia Town, Port Harcourt was named 𝑻𝙝𝒆 𝑳𝙞𝒃𝙚𝒓𝙖𝒕𝙞𝒐𝙣 𝙎𝒕𝙖𝒅𝙞𝒖𝙢 by the Rivers State Government to celebrate the liberation of People of Rivers
State from the now defunct Eastern Regional Government of Nigeria and Port Harcourt from the Biafra rebels.

In 2015, The Rivers State Government renamed the Stadium 𝑮𝙚𝒏. 𝙔𝒂𝙠𝒖𝙗𝒖 𝑮𝙤𝒘𝙤𝒏 𝑺𝙩𝒂𝙙𝒊𝙪𝒎 🏟️ to immortalise the man who created Rivers State and liberated Port Harcourt and its people from the Biafra rebels.

If you follow the old system that we had in Nigeria, this can serve as a training ground if Port-Harcourt hosts an international football event (the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium will be the main stadium).

It is very wrong to say Rivers were under Biafra rebels, nobody held them captives it’s sad we just twist narratives to drive a point.

At least after staying for six months without cash and as elections is fast approaching,he needs cash at hand even though the stadium needs total renovation.follow Wile’s step just like ICC Abuja we cost more than 36 billion.Fubara,you can use 100 billion to renovate it pls.
