The Day I Found Out I Was HIV Positive. by RetroviralS(op): 5:19am On Oct 28, 2025
The day I found out I was HIV positive, everything in the world went silent for me.

Growing up, nobody talked about HIV where I’m from. We talked about malaria, typhoid, and sometimes “that cough that won’t go.” But HIV? It was a whisper, something that lived in other people’s stories, never ours.

I met Tunde during my NYSC year. He was charming, always the first to volunteer during health outreaches. We started dating, slowly, quietly. We both believed we were being careful. Until the day I fell sick.

At first, I thought it was just stress. Then came the fever, the weight loss, and the fatigue that made getting out of bed feel like a punishment. I went to a small clinic in town. They suggested a test. I agreed. Minutes later, the nurse returned, her eyes soft but heavy.

“It’s reactive,” she said.

My ears rang. My chest went cold. The word reactive replayed in my head like a song I didn’t want to hear. I sat there, staring at nothing. When I finally spoke, my voice cracked.

“What do I do now?”

The nurse handed me a referral note and told me to start treatment immediately. But where? In my town, people talked, and stigma traveled faster than sound.

I almost gave up until I found Retroviral Solutions (RVS) online. They offered discreet delivery of ARVs and test kits. I hesitated before clicking “contact.” That message changed my life.

The next morning, an RVS agent called. Warm, calm, no judgment. They explained how I could receive my medication without stepping into a crowded clinic.
Days later, my first pack of ARVs arrived at my doorstep, neatly packed with a note that read:

“You’re not alone in this journey.”

That line broke something open in me. The silence. The shame. The fear. It reminded me that managing HIV isn’t just about medicine. It’s about being treated with dignity.

Today, I’m healthy, working, and helping others who are afraid to take that first step. Because I know what it means to feel invisible and what it feels like to be seen again, especially in a country like Nigeria, where stigma runs deep.

If you or someone you know needs HIV treatment or discreet support, reach out to RVS. We’re here for every step of your journey.

Everyone reacts differently, some cry, some go numb, some pretend it’s not real.

What do you think is the first thing that comes to a person's mind when a positive result is handed to them?

Don't stop indiscriminate sex ok? You'd know whether its an advert or advice sooner or later. Dem no dey tell pesin. The tin don too plenti for town now sef as no agency is there to sensitise people anymore. No thanks to the Internet and all the hookup apps.

A word is enough for the wise. Trump has stopped USAID that funds and subsidises ARVs. The last batch of the drugs would soon finish and depression will creep in like a midnight snake. It's better imagined than experienced. I hope people won't start dying soon due to non availability of ARVs as it was the case when hiv was first discovered.

I had a friend back in 2004 who was positive. She was very open about it and didn't allow it get to her. She enjoyed life.

I don't know if she's still alive, though! Hers was AIDS not mere HIV.

Whose report do you believe?

The report of Doctor or the report of God?

HIV Aids is not the end, until God says it.

With Men it is impossible but with God all things are possible

Stigmatization kills faster, but abstinence and health regulatory processes are the keys.

Unfortunately, HIV is a risk factor for developing cancer.

You obviously don't know much about HIV

The level of immaturity here henn... but its human nature anyway. Same as Twitter and many other public places.
People will say anything hurtful or to get attention when its any anonymous forum.

By the way do Nigerians still get access to those drugs? And I thought HIV was in step 1 of being cured.
