Define bribe. Bribe is what you offer to either get what you don't deserve or to get what you deserve through a shaddy means. No sane person is proud of bribe. Bribe is a shameful thing.

Settling your in-laws is same as feeding your children and paying the children's school fees. Do you have to bribe your children for them to look after you in your old age? Will anybody say that you are not the parent of your children when you fail to feed the children and put them in school? The answer to each of these questions is no. But you need to empower the children. It is somehow shameful when they can't get from you what children normally get from their parents. Settling your in-laws is your responsibility. It is an empowerment for them to be recognised as your in-laws and for them to identify with you no matter your situation. It is wrong for you to term it bribe.

I never implied that marriage list is a bribe. My point is that giving your in-laws all or part of whatever is on the list is your responsibility. It is the same way you buying clothes for your parents to attend your wedding is your responsibility despite the fact that nobody makes it compulsory for you to do so.

In Africa, marraige is between families primarily and not the European man and wife model.

By the way, very few families are trying to scam you with the list, it will surprise you that your prospective wife's mum and dad will not see anything from the list sef as the contents are distributed to the wider family.
