But that's huge! Read Achebe's "No Longer At Ease". There's how they are seen and so many societal titles and things they can't pertake in, no matter how successful they become!
Yes. Actually, that novel came to mind when this topic was raised.
Think the parent's decision worked against their son's inability to make it(in the novel.)
Everything seemed to work against him.

Are you sure you read the novel? Obi and Clara were fervently in love as young adults. Obi was so in love with her he was ready to even die than not marry her, especially when he found out she was pregnant. His mother told him she would kill herself if he married her, an osu. Mind you, his family is the most fervent and foremost Christians in Umuofia. Clara had to go for abortion, etc.

I know all these Do you remember how it actually ended for him?
His mother died(though no spiritual undertone)...he was struggling financially...even Clara left him.
At the end of the day, everything seemed to work not in his favor no matter how he tried.

Ok, you did read the novel. Yes, but all that had nothing to do with Clara. His mother was already very sick, then she died. He was so financially pressed he could not travel to the East from Lagos for the funeral.
Those financial stresses led him to start taking bribes.
Eventually he was caught. But non of that had anything to do with Clara.

Yeah I know it had nothing to do with Clara.
Everything that kept happening to him and his family, don't you think it was the Osu effect taking place? When the forces of nature is/are against someone, what others have been doing and getting away with, when it Comes to their tun, they fail. Even in little and inconsequential things.

You could have a point if he had gone ahead and married Clara. But he didn't. In fact you could argue that Clara was his good luck and that his luck started going bad when Clara left his life. Besides, he never really had any bad luck per se. He was just caught in a bribery sting.

That's actually a very good novel, though very short. It is actually a love story. In my opinion it rivals his famous "Things Fall Apart". Achebe is the best. See excerpt below

They're not normal people... That's the only place you'll go to in Igboland and see Muslims. Is that not a stain already?
You are a religion bigot , yet you want a better Nigeria. What is wrong with being a Muslim. There are also Muslims in Imo and Anambra.

But you fail to note: HE DID NOT MARRY CLARA!
Any supposed curse only comes from MARRYING!
Also, his best life was when he was with Clara. Once she left was when things went south!

No. The supposed curse came from his Father (who was a "free-born" marrying his mother, "an Osu."wink And believing that since h has converted to Christianity, nothing will happen...
So, Obi's birth was supposedly an "abomination."

Ok, so you didn't read the novel. Nothing wrong with that.
No, his mother was not osu at all. Infact it was his mother that said she'd kill herself if he married osu

Yes but Osu is more popular than ohu, you hardly see ohu but Osu is almost everywhere in igbo land

It would seem so. Just think, if only she wasn't an osu they'd have gotten married and his mother would have seen it, and he probably wouldn't have been caught in bribery, and they'd have raised a beautiful family.
All rubbished, because of STUPID, TOTALLY MEANINGLESS man-made "osu"!

That's quite reasonable. We have to arrange it ahead of time so you can waybill it to Lagos before I arrive - since you are in Delta

Hope it works. Igbos should come together as a nation and abolish the Osu or Ohu (is there a difference?) system.
Ohanaeze has since done that.

Yes. I have. But most of his works are mostly Tragedies which makes me avoid them. That doesn't stop them from being enjoyable.
I couldn't help though because they were recommended texts while in school.

grin The questions I keep asking is, Obi should have just gotten married to Clara. If you don't tell, who will know?
Like, is there any obvious feature one can use 5o identify them? It's not as if they have 4 eyes or 3 legs anyways. I mean, they blend in almost anywhere. It's sad sha
