Meet the former chief of Naval staff whose land is at the center of controversy with the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike

Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, is retired Nigerian Navy Vice Admiral who served as the Chief of Naval Staff of Nigeria from January 2021 to June 2023.

Born on April 22, 1966, in Kano State, Nigeria, he enlisted in the Nigerian Navy in 1984 and specialized in Underwater Warfare with a subspecialization in Intelligence.

He holds a PhD and a Master's degree in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University.

Vice Admiral Gambo has held numerous key appointments throughout his career, including Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Administration and Commander/Commandant of the Directorate of Naval Intelligence Annex and the Nigerian Navy Intelligence School.

During his tenure as Chief of Naval Staff, he achieved significant milestones such as reducing piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea.

He is also a member and fellow of various professional bodies related to management, safety, shipping, and diplomacy.

He has earned several awards and honors, including the ECOMOG Peacekeeping Medal and Admiralty Medal

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike accused him of land grabbing and illegal construction.

Wike should be allowed to do his work without unnecessary distractions.

Those who are interested in the land grabbed issue should take it to court.

Na court go eventually decide who get the land.

If we were to judge the matter by law and legality, Wike will win.

But this matter is complicated.

Vice Admiral AZ Gambo is senior to the current CDS, General Oluyode, and by that, the CDS cannot go against his orders. This is simple military tradition and precedence.

The only person that can give a counter order to the orders of Vice Admiral Gambo is the Commander-In-Chief, Tinubu, but even Tinubu must be careful because there’s a way he’d handle the matter in favour of the law (Wike) and he would anger the rank and file of the military establishment which will not be good at all.

Remember he just survived a coup.

There’s a reason people like AZ Gambo are left alone to do their thing as far as their actions are not very much against the law or threat to public peace and order.

How much does Wike and FCT ministry want to generate from the General registering for his development levy. It’s a totally unnecessary fracas.

I won’t be surprised if Wike is sacked because of this.

Smh.

It's obvious that you have not had case in court before or got involved in land matters litigation.

That is bad PR to the retired officer. He could actually land in bigger problems ,even arrested and prosecuted.

The Minister represents the President. If he takes on the Minister then he is taking on the President and that's bad for him.

Interestingly, the retired officer wouldn't send his own son on such errand and when he was a young officer, he wasn't having a shouting match publicly with constituted authorities or behaving the way the young officer behaved to the Minister. If he was behaving like that he would not get to the pinnacle of his career.

FG will investigate the appropriateness or otherwise of a serving or retired senior military officer to give order to a junior officer to restrain a Minister on his lawful duty from performing his duty.
That will be visited to ensure that such disgraceful scene never happens again.

That Junior Officer should have known the limits of his discretion and just kept quiet after saying he was obeying order which has now turned out to be an order given by a retired military officer.

So if tomorrow, retired or serving officers tell him to slap a government official, he will do it niyen.

It was the President he was challenging by placing the 'order ' above the authority of the president delegated to the Minister.

Whatever incentive he got or was promised by the retired Senior Officer for him to behave in that manner must be investigated too. Haba!

It is completely unacceptable that the Minister was prevented from performing his lawful duty by a junior officer acting on the order of a retired military officer. Everyone including the junior officer and the retired Senior naval officer should by now have been rounded up and quizzed if it's not already done.

That video is a very sad event that embarrasses the President and the nation.

If this is true then that's what probably got into his head. Smh.

Please let us leave out his Dad out for now. The old man served and should be accorded his respect.

I am not sure his Dad or any Dad will be really happy to watch his son have a shouting match with a representative of the President.

I will not be surprised if his Dad is already reaching out to people to intervene. His father may not like the fact that it was even his own son the retired Senior Officer sent on such non-core military task that doesn't count for promotion.

That's not fame but notoriety that can lead to his being dismissed from the armed forces or posted to one obscure place where he will prefer to quit than to take such posting. If he's in Sambisa or our embassy in Polynesia, will he have time for land matters? No nah.

You and I know that Tinubu lacks the guts to arrest and prosecute a retired CNS, not now that he's licking the asses of the northern elite for 2027 plus that he should be walking on egg shells with the rumoured coup. He isn't Obj nor PMB that arrested generals and got away with it. Arrest and prosecute him on what grounds sef? Did he invite the drunken master to his property? For the young officer, he's shown great composure and comportment even when faced with the worst possible stench of booze halitosis he'd encounter in his life, and will earn great commendation from his superiors.

That is how they use to do

Insubordination when it comes to Southern leaders is in their blood, DNA.

In their mind na them get Nigeria, they don't rate Wike at all.

See what they did to GEJ. (In their mind why must he be the one on the seat, or making that beneficial policy, they never see anything good.)

The road he's constructing all over FCT, to them is useless. They don't regard those achievements at all. Walahi if I was Wike, I no go stress myself for people wey no go regard him at all even if he turn FCT to eldorado.

I think most people commenting on this land matter are either mischievous or ignorant.I personally don't like some of Wike's public comments or conducts. The FCT minister has said on numerous public occasions, that military personnel usually harass officials of FCT land department whenever they are trying to carry out their lawful duties.

There was even a case in late 2023 when officials of government were beaten up by soldiers in a land illegally encroached on by a retired army general. If u carefully read the news on Sahara reporters yesterday, you will discover the land was never allocated to anybody since 2014.What Sahara reporters made reference to were memos submitted to FCT minister before Wike that were nv approved.

Oga, it's like you're a bit ignorant of how the military operates. It's a code of obey before complain, unlike in the police where a rank and file can openly resist his superiors orders and get away with it. That young officer is going to get more than a pat on the back because he obeyed to the later. The order was to resist the ministers access to the property and he carried it out gallantly. You only elect to view the incident from a civil relations perspective, but in the military, emotions form the least of their consideration.
You are the one who don't know sir.
It is not true that an officer must obey all orders. It is not true. An officer in particular knows the rule of engagement and won't act above the law because of any order let alone one from a retired senior officer.

There's a subsisting order that security agencies personnel should not be directly involved in land matters except acting on court order or official duty by government.

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse for breaking the law.
arantess:
Truth is even his dad is not a general, you cannot go through academy and not have confidence to talk to any human
That's a Brigadier General. So you don’t even know their ranks sef and you are referring to academy?

There's nothing special in choosing to go to academy. We all have our preferences and choice. Many got into academy and regretted going there because their heart is elsewhere like Cute Abiola who eventually quit the military for acting.
No serious minded person will go to school and will not be able to communicate with confidence on the subject you know o, not on everything so that you will not speak or behave foolishly
