Full Text Of President Tinubu’s Speech At Editors’ Conference 2025 by Putindbutt(op): 7:17am On Nov 13, 2025
OPENING ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU GCFR AT THE NIGERIAN GUILD OF EDITORS’ ANNUAL CONFERENCE STATE HOUSE WEDNESDAY, 12TH NOVEMBER 2025.

PROTOCOL

1. It is my privilege to welcome you to the State House for this year’s Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors. Your presence here reflects the enduring importance of the media in shaping national direction and strengthening democratic life. I commend the leadership of the Guild for sustaining this tradition of reflection and professional engagement.

2. The theme you have chosen, “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors”, invites us to reflect on the state of our democracy and the ways in which public discourse can either strengthen or weaken the bonds that hold our nation together. This conversation is necessary as we continue to build institutions that are transparent, resilient, and trusted by our citizens.

3. Throughout our history, journalism in Nigeria has been more than a profession. It has been an instrument of national awakening. From the early newspapers that challenged colonial injustice to the principled voices that kept hope alive during the dark days of military dictatorship, the Nigerian press has stood at critical points in our nationhood to defend reason, dignity and progress. Many journalists endured intimidation, detention, and personal hardship in defence of the public good. Their sacrifices are part of the foundation upon which our democracy rests today. We honour them not only in memory but also by remaining committed to the values they upheld.

4. Yet, freedom secured through struggle is not self-sustaining. It requires constant vigilance and responsible exercise. A democracy is sustained not only by elections and laws, but also by the integrity of public conversation. This is where your role becomes central and indispensable.

5. As editors and managers of the national information space, you shape narratives. You influence public understanding. You decide what becomes national focus and how our collective challenges are interpreted. The weight of that responsibility is significant. It must be exercised with wisdom, fairness and a strong sense of national duty.

6. Nigeria is a large and diverse country. Debate and differences are part of our reality. However, disagreement must never translate into the erosion of national cohesion. Criticism, when informed and constructive, is a service to the nation. But cynicism that breeds mistrust and despair can weaken the very foundations of the society we all seek to improve. The national interest must always remain paramount.

7. We live in a time when information travels rapidly and widely. Social media has made every citizen a potential publisher. This has benefits, but it also increases the speed and scale of misinformation. Falsehood can take root before truth has time to speak. In such an environment, the editorial function is more important than ever. Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle and professional judgement must be your guide.

8. I urge you, therefore, to continue upholding the highest standards of journalism. Report boldly, but do so truthfully. Critique government policy but do so with knowledge and fairness. Your aim must never be to tear down, but to help build a better society.

9. On our part, this administration remains committed to securing our nation, sustaining economic stability and widening the circle of opportunity for all citizens. The reforms we have undertaken have been challenging, but they are designed to place our economy on a strong and enduring footing. We have taken steps to restore macroeconomic balance, encourage investment and rebuild confidence. The signs of progress are visible in several sectors of the economy. Still, we know there is more work to do, and we remain focused on ensuring that growth translates into real improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians.

10. However, economic reforms and institutional improvements alone cannot build the Nigeria we seek. Nation-building requires cooperation. It requires trust. It requires a shared understanding that our future is tied together. Government has its role. The private sector has its role. Civil society has its role. And the media has a distinct responsibility to help shape a climate of reason and unity.

11. I ask that you continue to exercise that responsibility with seriousness and honour. Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair. Let us remember that the stories we tell ourselves as a nation and as a people, influence the country we become.

12. Distinguished Editors, your work matters. The tone you set in your newsrooms, the standards you enforce, and the courage with which you defend the truth will all help shape the direction of our national journey. Let us carry this responsibility with purpose.

13. I wish you constructive, thoughtful and fruitful deliberations, and I look forward to the outcomes of your discussions.

14. Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR
President, Commander-in-Chief of The Armed Forces,
Federal Republic of Nigeria

This man has hardly spoken about the terrorism. And Nigerians have moved on. Again.

Doctors have been on strike for almost weeks, yet this man goes on as if all is well.

This man, after claiming that we have met our revenue target, wants to borrow a fresh 1 trillion.

This man is a tax collector. But he eats taxes instead of using them for the greater good.

This man needs to go. This man has to go.

Today's media is all about click baits and screaming headlines, they have thrown research, verification and professionalism out of the window, they have replaced it with social media copy and paste. Many media houses go on social media, copy any information whether true or false, then paste in their newspapers. Some of them have even become an extension of the opposition under the cover of brown envelope journalism, fabricating propaganda against the Government.

I only thought you guys only cook up lies and propaganda but you have mixed it up with complete ignorance. And that's what the President is talking about. Irresponsible media and irresponsible opposition. It still won't win you elections.

Statements devoid of emotions, empathy to the society. Just done cos it's the time for it. We need just 1% love from our leaders especially in Africa, is that too much to ask in a country where I pay tax and still have to pay for what the Govt ought to do for the society at large. What do tax payers enjoy in Nigeria? I need someone to educate me on that.

1. The other day, a detachment of Policemen allegedly from Abubakar Malami were acting under instructions and with the might of Nigeria's Federal Power to perform an illegality in Magodo. Their C/o looked straight into the eyes of Governor Babajide Sanwoolu and told him the Governor didn't have the power to move him away from that illegality.

And that was it.

In broad daylight and before live cameras.

The Governor and his entourage went back to their offices afterall they had no control over the Police.

That was Governor of Lagos State on a matter of Lagos lands which is under his Government.

Nothing happened.

It was a central CULT COMMAND structure.

2. Sometime in 2003 or thereabout, a team of Policemen led by an AIG practically abducted a sitting Governor Chris Ngige.

He was kept incommunicado while the process of removing him "constitutionally" was going on with full speed in the background.

They could have killed him because he had no powers over any of them.

It was a central CULT COMMAND structure.

Nothing happened.

3. At another time in Portharcourt Rivers State, a Sitting Governor democratically elected suddenly found himself stripped bare and vulnerable when his security details of DSS and Police were withdrawn without notice.

That was Rotimi Amaechi then.

Nothing happened. He was a nobody in the scheme.

It was a central CULT COMMAND structure.

4. Yesterday it was the turn of Nyesome Wike, Federal Minister and Agent of the President.

Right before live cameras he was confronted by the Naval Officer, a man who may have just graduated from the NDA.

They are trained to obey ONLY the orders of their superiors in the Miliary. It is how the Mafia works.

Once the order is given, no other things matter until the orders are fully implemented.

A superior officer can give an illegal order such as we have witnessed many times and that officer will carry it out.

Asking a Lieutenant to go on guard duty over a personal property of no interest to national security must be outside his scope of work but the orders were issued.

I bet that that Lieutenant would rather have killed or died there yesterday than not carry out those orders.

That is why Fela called them Zombies.

It was a central CULT COMMAND structure.

5. You will be very myopic if you can't see the precedent that was set yesterday.

It simply means that every officer of the Armed forces can jolly well take a plot of land anywhere in Abuja or across the country and do as he likes.

It is a matter of pouring soldiers there to guard it.

Once you see "Military Zone" signs on any property your duty is to look away from it.

Unless of course you can go report to his superior officers in the barracks and they are at liberty to act or not act depending on their own level of compromise because they too may have hands in such illegal acquisitions.

Even if the President and Commander-in-Chief invokes Presidential powers to override the commanders then he risks the Espirit-de-corp of their CULT CULTURE in the Miliary which will unite them in their insanity and they may begin to plot a coup to make nonsense of the President himself.

What is the message we are sending here?

THAT THE GUNS IN THE HANDS OF SOLDIERS ARE MIGHTIER THAN THE TAXPAYERS WHO BOUGHT THEM, THE MILIARY CULT IS SUPERIOR TO CIVIL AUTHORITY AND WE ARE STILL UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MILIARY CULTS!

Not even the current Chief of Navy would have bothered to order that Lieutenant out of that place because the Ex Naval Chief was his superior and the CULT don't joke with seniority. They will probably laugh it off over beer and peppersoup in the officers Mees while the insolent Lieutenant gets a pat on the back.

Doesn't it then prove that they are all Bandits themselves and it is the reason that the Banditry is unendinghuh

It is a bad precedent and it shows that the President and Commander-in-Chief himself may not be immune from such insults.

Nonsense!

I like that the President attended the Editors conference.. it shows his high regard for journalism and journalists. Kudos to him for this.

I heard this morning that President Tinubu is the first Nigerian President to attend Editors Conference since the Conference started in 2001 (24yrs ago), that's impressive of him.
