Imagine this: a child, a student, a working professional, a grandmother — all with one thing in common. A condition that doesn’t check ID, career, or birthday before arriving: diabetes. That’s what the 2025 theme tells us. Diabetes may appear at any point along our life’s arc — childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and beyond. But what truly matters is how we respond across those stages. |

This yoruba soup that people like to mock, gbegiri and ewedu, is actually a super affordable lifestyle that manages this condition. I think their elders somehow discovered this in the past and made it a staple. Wise people. ![]() |

In 2023 I went for my driver's license and they needed to check my vision but to my surprise I couldn't read the chart. After few days I developed chest pain and I was urinating profusely. I told my wife that I i have been peeing in my clothes. I then noticed a lot of ants in our toilet sink My whole body changed and but I couldn't pinpoint what's wrong I went to the hospital and they requested for my urine. After urinalysis, the nurse told me that I have a lot of sugar in my urine and she then did finger stick and my blood sugar was 350mg/dl The Dr asked me to go and obtain chest x-ray and EKG. Before I could come back, he told my wife that I have type 2 diabetes That's the worst news in my life... To cut the story short..I was seen by cardiologist, Ophthalmologist and PCP Final story..I have been out of diabetic window for the past one year as I'm able to bring my A1C from 12.6 to 5.8 without any medication How did I do it? |

@rutherford2019, kindly complete your post. I am curious as to how you were able to lower your blood sugar level without "medications" |

Good write-up. Nigerians should go for regular blood sugar test and we should add more bitters to our diet . The average Nigerian food is filled with much starch and sugar . Diabetics should stick to their diet and take their insulin regularly . |

LIVINGICONREBOR:I had high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia as well Ophthalmologist told me that 2 blood vessels in my eyes are ruptured but it can heal if I'm able to bring my A1C to 8.0. My EKG and chest x-ray were normal I did Echocardiogram and chest CT all came back good I had low sodium level like 34mmol I ran like more than 100 tests I got a bit of relief when my kidney function test came back normal and my Beta cell test good and no heart problem Then the Dr prescribed jardiance, metformin, rosuvastatin and lisinopril. I told him I don't want to start taking medications at my 30s..for how long I HIT THE GYM I drink 4+ liters of water daily, I stopped eating garri, yam, fufu, semolina, custard I grind carrots with eggplant and little bit of plantain flour instead. I only eat chicken, egg whites and I try to get my diet from protein instead of carbs and fat I use plain yogurt with berries, vegetables I eat bread without added sugars I drink green tea I lost 10kg of weight in 3 months I got 6 packs.. Infact my last appointment with my Dr he told me that he has never seen anything like that He told me that he didn't do anything for me. GYM is the most important thing to treat diabetes NB..I live in Texas..it's difficult to manage diabetes in Nigeria |

Diabetes as a metabolic syndrome exposes one to other health issues. With Diabetes comes hypertension and hyperlipidemia |

Rutherford2019:What unit of measure are you using for your HBA1C, hope not 12 % you meant ? |

Diabetes is one of the worst diseases in the world. Diabetes type 2 is largely a lifestyle disease. |

Yeah it's always in % It's 12% which is critical level >6.4% is diabetic yerima21: |

Rutherford2019:I had to re read your post and i now understand your HBA1C was 12% before you hit the gym and brought it down. I had wrongly understood that your HBA1C right NOW (despite gym) is 12% which is critical. I love your courage ! |

Rutherford2019:Intermittent fasting, diet plan and exersice. Tell me I'm wrong.... okay, In your subsequent post, you indeed provided an explanation. Initially, I assumed you were akin to those individuals who possess knowledge but deliberately withhold it to profit from those in need. |

Rutherford2019:Why do you say it is difficult to manage diabetes in Nigeria compared to the us ? All the foods you listed up there are readily available in Nigeria. And there are so many gyms in Nigeria too. It onlytakes discipline and strict adherence to diet and exercise regimen in combating pre and full blown diabetes via lifestyle approach. |
