I am seriously down with emotion, anxiety and depression of what the future holds..it's been 10 yrs of graduation and I have being teaching in a private school...life as been miserable...at the age of 40, I am not yet married.i don't even know what to do....kindly help me nairalanders

There are jobs a man should not do in Nigeria and teaching is one of them , Nigerians don't value teachers or education they are only interested in the certificate so they will never pay teachers well ..Leave that job for our women while you strive for something else

Your best bet right now is to start searching for another job. Sometimes, a change of location makes all the difference—some schools in Lagos, for example, pay over 100k. Even if you decide to leave teaching, look for other opportunities.

I know it’s tough because you work Monday to Friday, but try to use the holidays for job hunting. Since we are approaching January, there will likely be a 'labour shift' where companies and industries replace old staff, so it's the perfect time to apply. Also, have you considered taking up home lessons or after-school coaching?
It helps a lot with extra cash in the meantime.

What happened to private lessons? What happened to running preparatory lessons for GCE, SSCE, NECO, JAMB, SAT, GRE and the rest

I dont pitty you guys at all, when most male teachers suppose to pay attention to opportunity that is huge enough to transform lives, most of them are busy seducing the wife of the same man that contract them on home lesson. many wives have taken home lesson teachers as close companion. and the teachers on the other hand dont know when to set boundaries.. when most housewives think of buying the children clothes and shoes, it the lesson teachers they call, when she needs anything at all, it the lesson teacher. they practically look for every opportunity to hear lesson teacher's voice even when their is no reason for doing it.

most men simply go mute not unaware but thinking of a perfect damage control mechanism. sometimes we chose to relocate the family to a new locations to break from the shackle of lesson teachers who could see clearly the reckless move that house wife is making but chose to forge with her without respecting boundaries.

The truth is, many lesson teachers are secret enemies of the husband in various homes. in many cases where opportunity show up, some of the lesson teachers are placed behind the base of the opportunity. many homes are broken today because of randy involvements between the lesson teachers and the housewives

Over 10 years, about 80 percent of my students passed Chemistry WASSCE and NECO without exam malpractice. (I am a Deeper Life bro and don't do expo or allow it for my students) Roughly speaking, almost half of my students got distinction. I have gotten CAIE and other certificates in my teaching career.

It's not ur fault,it's the country you found urself. This country is not meant to work from d start. No plan,no structure,everyone is on his own. Our transformer had got blown up from October last year,up till now,we no get light. Community members are forced to borrow loans to install solar. Ibedc said we shud bring 18million for new transformer.

Nigeria is not meant to be created by God, seriously nothing is working in this country.
So when u said you re unemployed and unmarried at 40. It's not really ur fault,but the country u find ur self. There are millions of Nigerian youths in ur shoes and no hope in sight. My friend younger brother is teaching in osogbo collecting 45k salary. This country is doomed

This is so sad to read. Teaching is a noble profession and it's pay should not be this low. I was once in this situation but since I switched to online teaching my story I've changed. I now earn over 200k monthly and I know people that earn 1m from teaching online. I think you should look into switching.

Not all teachers earn well in Lagos. There are some factors that determine that. Factors like location. Someone teaching in Ikeja will earn better that someone teaching in Ikorodu.

If you teach such subjects as Maths and sciences, you can easily make more money from after-school lessons, that is, if your proprietor isn't the greedy type.

Don't leave the job until you get something better.
With 10 years teaching experience, I have no doubt you're at least above average. Here are my suggestions:
1. Meet a professional to help you repackage your CV to make you stand out, and submit to all the big schools and lecture houses in your area. At least that should get you a better job with better pay, and during interview when they ask you how much you want don't go and be saying 80k or 100k, start from 250-300k. Even if they beat it down to 150k it's still much better

2. Gather 3 - 5 of your school's exam year students (junior waec, senior waec etc) and start teaching them on the weekend for free or at ridiculously cheap prices. If you decide to bill them, let it just be for your transport only. But tell them to announce to their friends how much they're benefiting and to tell their friends they're paying something much higher (but still less than what the regular tutorial centres are charging). You can use a church venue on Saturdays. If you can't find a church to use, start attending one nearby that has it's own building and after some time approach the pastor with your request.

3. While teaching these students, record the videos and upload on YouTube. Then pay someone to monetize it for you.

Don't be too greedy not to pay someone else to assist you in areas you're not to conversant with, whether in teaching or management.

With consistency and diligence you should be able to rent your own venue after some time and you'll be well on your way to owning a popular tutorial centre and even a school.
