Dr. Maxwell Opara, one of the lawyers representing the convicted leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, visited him on Sunday at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, accompanied by four other associates. Despite the heavy security presence around the correctional facility, residents of the surrounding community continued their daily activities.


Shops remained open, transportation continued as usual, and many locals seemed largely unconcerned by Kanu’s presence. Speaking after the visit, Opara confirmed that Kanu remained in high spirits despite his circumstances.

He disclosed that efforts were underway to secure Kanu’s return to Abuja, where he is expected to file his appeal. As I speak to you, he is preparing his appeal personally. We are exploring ways to bring him back to Abuja so he can file it, because time is running.

We just met with him, and although he is in good spirits, the urgency of filing the appeal cannot be overstated.”
Opara questioned the rationale behind Kanu’s transfer to Sokoto, arguing that it complicates the appeal process.


On what basis was he brought to Sokoto? I don’t understand the reason. His appeal is in Abuja,” he said.The judgment was delivered on Thursday, and now Friday, Saturday, and Sunday have passed with no progress. This is very unfortunate.”

Daily Trust had reported how a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism and ordered his remand in protective custody.

While delivering the judgement, Justice James Omotosho had said the secret police could move Kanu to any correctional facility within the country. The Department of State Services (DSS) later moved the IPOB leader to the Nigerian Custodial Centre in Sokoto.

Appeal is not a new trials

Kanu's relocation to Sokoto is not without reasons. His appeal process would be concluded there.

The relocation to Abuja might be a distraction.

Kanu will spend at least a year in Sokoto prison before being moved to Borno prison

He is being moved to Sokoto for security reasons. He will be safer there than in Abuja. Kanu is a convicted felon and must be treated as such.

Can you prove it? You people talk with emotions. Prove he killed 20 police men with his gang. Prove he was caught with weapons or prove he had funds and used it to get weapons. He said the judge doesn't know law and it's true. Court is a place of proof. The prosecutor couldn't prove a single thing. But just what he said. Becareful because something's done to wicked someone may just come back to you. If we can sentence someone to life in prison for just saying something. Just know it could happen to you or your family and you will be sent to prison. Imagine you told someone to go out and kill people. And he goes out to kill people. And instead of capturing the people that actually committed the crime they will capture you and give you maximum sentence for mere talk. That you said something is not a criminal offence. But it is o Lt offence if you actually masterminded the killing, either funded the killer's, got them guns. Phones etc that can aid to the killing. And it must be proven you did such a thing.

Don't mind them. If we go by justice Omotosho judgement then Oba Akiolu should be guilty of genocide, by saying Igbos should drown in the lagoon

The fact that they have families and loved ones is irrelevant to ipob

If the life imprisonment of Kanu is paining you so much ,then put yourself in the shoes of those who family were kpai by ipob.
