I didn't finish reading before I made my conclusion that Medicine is DEFINITELY not for you.
Why you may ask
If Jamb syllabus not 'syllables' is too bulky I wonder how you will cope with medicine.

Go for another thing please.
The cold secret of medical students is....our books are all too bulky, and yes, we wonder also how we go manage finish am before session ends...

Yes, all of us have that fear. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not telling the truth

The trick is to study the 'vital' parts, not to read the whole book.

Plus other courses have severe bulky books. Like LAW for example. cheesy, even other stem courses.

Really? In Nigeria?
Do they work as doctors too at hospitals?
I mean if you read anatomy or physiology or (i forget the third one) once you are done you can read medicine straight.

This is what I saw in uni

Every year some people in 100l are dropped from medicine because of poor GPA. They usually are pushed to anatomy, physiology maybe biochemistry, / microbiology.

I knew like 5 people this happened to back then. What I saw was they completed their course and then went back to med school. At least four of them are now doctors.

Direct Entry Requirements
A'Level Passes: Achieve at least three advanced level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Zoology.

Relevant Degree: Hold a Bachelor's degree (not below second class lower division) in a related science discipline, such as Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, or Zoology, from a recognized institution. You will still need to meet the O'Level requirements.
The irony is that by the time most people are through with med school in Nigeria, they hate the idea of medicine because it does not pay well. No pot of gold at the end of the tunnel. And your classmates who read four year courses have already been working for two years and pulling dough while you are still collecting money from mum and dad.

Lots of guys I knew then said their parents forced or tricked them into it.

Anyways my daughter can't say that. Girl is set on becoming a neurosurgeon

why not study traditional and native medicine with a sprinkle of tradoherbal sciences and maybe a touch of native surgical procedures using primitive tools.
Those bring you even closer to mother nature.
And their cut off mark na zero

Stop wasting scarce resources and time jawe grin

This must be a fake or made up story. There is no way someone will lose youth with a four to five year course and still hold medicine in mind.

Go and make money in the real world instead of chasing marks on a paper. There is no greater joy.
Lord have mercy...there are people I have known who even wrote JAMB after graduating in another course, working, just for the privilege of reading medicine.

I even have classmates and colleagues who wrote JAMB that many times just to read medicine self.

this is not a negative criticism

if as a graduate of microbiology, you are complaining about JAMB books being bulky
i really don't think you should be writing JAMB to go back to study medicine again

just one of your textbooks in university should be more than any JAMB book
so how did you read in school?

except your story isn't true

I'm already a graduate. Medicine is a Just a dream that I must bring to reality.

I doubt that you understand me. You probably don't have life ambitions judging from your comments.

If you can help me 'wise man', please do. If you can't, carry your basket mouth and leave this thread.

Hope u are not going through all this, because you want to be close to a lady? You said you’re already done with Nysc? Why not focus on the next chapter of life, get a good job, work sometime save up and further ur m.sc if u love knowledge that much. Going back in present day Nigeria isn’t worth it, especially with more people embracing herbal concoction as alternative to expensive health care. If by some miracle this method proves workable for Nigerians then that profession would lose all its relevance. Before you talk of government certifying herbs unsafe just know that the avg Nigerian don’t give a Bleep about the government.
I like your confidence, the way you displayed ignorance with confidence needs to be studied!!!

NO SIR!

A graduate of Microbiology
who has already written Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Year 1 (with bulkier books)
Eight semesters
from Year 1 to Year 4
who intends to go back to school to study medicine
can not complain of JAMB books being bulky

Actually this your response has shown me that you are not a graduate
(which is not a crime)

this your post is NOT TRUE!

Again, i am not criticizing you, your post is just not true

Also (i may be wrong) but a graduate of microbiology will not write JAMB and start from year 1 again, but will enter with direct entry

MicroBIOLOGY graduate can not write BIOLOGY in Year 1 again
(i may be wrong)

if your story is true, then i wish you the very best, and dont listen to any negative thought at all

go for what you want - medicine! and in no time, you will graduate
if you don't go for it, you will regret it in future

I mentioned medical student because I know that medicine requires a high jamb score. I am seeking for admission into medicine. it has been my dream for some time now, but jamb had been making it very difficult. It has been more than 6 years. I had to settle for a course I do not like. I'm a graduate now and done with Nysc. However my dreams remain. I attended three times and give up. I want to try it again with the determination to get it this time. I am seeking advice from people who have pass this stage successfully.

So I am making another attempt at jamb next year. I have started studying with jamb syllables and past questions but my problems are:

1. The textbooks are just too bulky. There are too many things to study if you are following the syllabus. It is very frustrating. Too many things to study in a very short period of time.

2. Tendency to forget easily. Things I studied last month I have forgotten more than 50% of it, because of it bulkiness. So I have to go back to revise them which is time consuming especially when I have new topics to study.

3. I'm currently studying organic compounds in chemistry. And it is it is painful that I couldn't answer all the past questions on that topic. I had to go back to revise the topic. It seems jamb questions are hidden in corners of the textbooks. And you can't find them no matter how hard you cram.

4. I do not know if my brain is a little bit slow because I can spend time on one particular topic and in 3 days time I end up forgetting 70% of what I read in that topic.so Did you people go through this problems cuz I'm tired.

5. Medicine for me is a do or die. I don't intend to give up. I always see myself as a medical doctor. But jamb is jamming me too much.

I need help and encouragement from you guys. How did you do it.

Should I just focus on past questions. Tell me how you did it. if possible break it down summarize it. Even if it's a hard Way. Tell me, I need your help.
If your number 2 and 4 is true, you're going to have SERIOUS problem in medical school.
Medical curriculum is vast, If you should sit down with textbooks all day without sleeping AT ALL, you still can't finish the syllabus.
And ability to pass your professional exams is dependent on you remembering things you read a year ago.
You just have to learn to remember if you truly want medicine

When you are a student you are a professional

The moment you have that mindset you should be fine

Many people want the medal but don't want to train

If you are a professional
When you wake up that is the first thing on your mind and last at night

So if you are not interested or doing it by force it is not the right path for you
When Messi was a kid no one force him to train
Many people talk and act as if study is an inconvenience
In short you have no interest in it . If you are interested the books will not be bulky

You wake up and you study at least 4 hours daily and depending on you brain capacity you do that every day for 1 to 3 years
Just like a footballer trains every day

If you are going to do JAMB In addition to studying you must master every single past question

ALL

There is no secret

When you enter the hall if you have worked hard enough there will not be any questions you have not seen before

Studying medicine is not for those who cram to pass, it is a must you know everything about science, not just to read and pass..

I was once rooting for medicine during my undergraduate days, nobody told me to settle for another course, microbiology...

Medicine is a course you must no the in and out of all that is required to excel, not just because you see people studying it and you want to jump at it...
What's there to read and understand in anatomy.... The preclinical part of medicine is cramming, you will cram tire

The issue is not Jamb . The issue is you have not mastered a lot about studying and retention . Do you sit down occasionally and mentally go through all you have read on a particular topic? Do you have a summary note on all you have learnt and revise periodically ? You just dont read and expect your brain to retain all the information . You have to do better . There is instant access to information nowadays , guess you are easily distracted

Now if you are complaining about the sizes of secondary school books after graduation, maybe medicine is not for you . You have no idea how tough medicine is.

This is your personal belief it has no basis in reality

People study medicine for many different reasons and after qualifying go on to do many different things with their degrees
The underlying principle is to have the brain capacity to grasp basic biological and chemical concepts

Many actually read to pass excel academically but have no human feelings

Not everyone with a medical degree goes on to do patient facing work
Some work in Research laboratories and never write a single prescription or talk to patients face to face

Some work in organisations like WHO with focus on population health policy again not working with patients face to face

9
Some go into politics or business and for them MbbS Is just a degree

You do not need to know in and out to excel

You must be committed, hardworking andcare about people. Caring is the most important thing

Science is dynamic
You learn something today
In 10 years you have to unlearn it and learn something new

I studied Education and currently work as teacher and I can boldly say that my salary plus private lessons in a month beats what the average medical doctor earns in a month in my locality here in Lagos, even if I don't have properties or a large bank account (just like many doctors who started practicing from the time I graduated from school), I can feed myself and family well enough, dress fine and afford a modest accomodation.
Hear, people! Hear.

Kudos to you.

Re: Medical Students: How Did You Get A High Jamb Score. by kpankpangolo: 2:06pm On Nov 28, 2025
Pointless. Anyone who wants to study medicine should inculcate the habit of studying from an early age. JAMB is literally A level exams imposed on O level students. Anyone not smart enough to realize that is not worth studying medicine.

The real reality is that you should go and learn a skill. You see, formal education can feel like a waste of time not that it doesn’t have value, but it takes a long time. So focus on learning a skill, working, and studying, and you’ll see how Nigeria can lead the way.
