I believe you must be a medical student or have already gone through that path. This post seeks for answers. If you are going to be of help, then saying 'medicine is not for you' is the wrong comment.
I said "maybe medicine is not for you " . It is a possibility for him to consider. Have you seen medical books before ? If he is worried about the size of chemistry textbooks , then he should revisit his dreams. Ababio is child's play to medical books .

I also told him what to improve on and how to go about it so that he can improve his retentive memory. I consider that to be helpful

I mentioned medical student because I know that medicine requires a high jamb score. I am seeking for admission into medicine. it has been my dream for some time now, but jamb had been making it very difficult. It has been more than 6 years. I had to settle for a course I do not like. I'm a graduate now and done with Nysc. However my dreams remain. I attended three times and give up. I want to try it again with the determination to get it this time. I am seeking advice from people who have pass this stage successfully.

So I am making another attempt at jamb next year. I have started studying with jamb syllables and past questions but my problems are:

1. The textbooks are just too bulky. There are too many things to study if you are following the syllabus. It is very frustrating. Too many things to study in a very short period of time.

2. Tendency to forget easily. Things I studied last month I have forgotten more than 50% of it, because of it bulkiness. So I have to go back to revise them which is time consuming especially when I have new topics to study.

3. I'm currently studying organic compounds in chemistry. And it is it is painful that I couldn't answer all the past questions on that topic. I had to go back to revise the topic. It seems jamb questions are hidden in corners of the textbooks. And you can't find them no matter how hard you cram.

4. I do not know if my brain is a little bit slow because I can spend time on one particular topic and in 3 days time I end up forgetting 70% of what I read in that topic.so Did you people go through this problems cuz I'm tired.

5. Medicine for me is a do or die. I don't intend to give up. I always see myself as a medical doctor. But jamb is jamming me too much.

I need help and encouragement from you guys. How did you do it.

Should I just focus on past questions. Tell me how you did it. if possible break it down summarize it. Even if it's a hard Way. Tell me, I need your help.
Look for a well structured and genuine jamb lesson center and take the classes while preparing. Practice past questions for 3 to4 yrs back. Work hard looking at the big picture. Never give up bc good things never come easy else everyone would have been doing them. All the best.

The bar to study MBBS in Nigeria is inordinately high because the average Nigerian parent want their children to become a medical doctor, therefore the demand to study MBBS is disproportionately higher compared to other science courses.

For example the year I gained admission to study Chemistry Education (by choice), according to JAMB statistics, only 8 people chose that course for that school that year, on the other hand, 13,000 candidates chose MBBS for that school that year, mind you, the school can only admit 100 each year for MBBS and out of this 100, about a third will come in through connection. So you have 13,000 JAMBITES in a rat race for 70 merit slots. This means that if you picked a random 180 JAMBITES that choose MBBS for that school for that year, only one person would be admitted. Guess who that one person would be? an academic freak and in many cases someone already in the University studying a different course while applying each year for medicine. Hence, you need to score 330+ to be fully confident that you will be that 1/180 persons.

A student that scores 280 is good, 300 is great, 320 is excellent but might not be good enough to get MBBS on merit in a public university in Nigeria. Imagine how hard it is for a JAMBITES of this generation, highly distracted by social media to score 330+. Though compared to my days, UTME questions are softer but the students I encounter in the classroom today have little interest in studying their books spontaneously, which explains the statistics of why it more difficult to score 200 today than when UTME was paper based.

Length and breath of what I have said is: The fact that one doesn't get admitted to study MBBS despite giving the ULTIMATE preparation in terms of study doesn't make the person a bad student. Only those who are exceptionally (freakingly) good academically can score high enough to get MBBS on merit in a public university. The bar is a relative lower in private universities but I bet you know the figures involved.

You may consider other equally good courses to study. I studied Education and currently work as teacher and I can boldly say that my salary plus private lessons in a month beats what the average medical doctor earns in a month in my locality here in Lagos, even if I don't have properties or a large bank account (just like many doctors who started practicing from the time I graduated from school), I can feed myself and family well enough, dress fine and afford a modest accomodation.

I've spoken here based on my decade old experience as a science teacher teaching UTME prep classes.
More private universities should come out to help.

More private universities should come out to help.
The slots are always available in private universities. A candidate that scores 280+ will be admitted to study Medicine and Surgery in most Private Universities that offer the course. 300+ guarantees admission into ANY private university to study the course. However, anyone seeking to study Medicine and Surgery in any Private University should be prepared to dole out 3-4 million naira (at the minimum) per annum in tuition, housing and other expenses.

As someone who was in your shoes before, I think I can advice you on this.
Admission into Medicine in most federal institutions without connection is by far one of the hardest hurdles to cross while seeking admission, but you have to understand that the level of competition varies across various schools. It is stiffer in UNIBEN, OAU, UI, UNILAG, UNILORIN, UNN and a few other top federal schools but lesser in UNIUYO, UNICAL, UNIABUJA, UNIPORT and a few others too. Competition is lesser or almost not there in private Universities but do you have the funds? I can't vouch for state universities because their method of admissions seems not too clear to me.
These are factors you should consider when making your choices. And pls drop the mindset the the books are bulky because to get MBBS on merit, you must read wide and a have a strong knowledge base. I don't think any o level Textbook can be as big as Keith Moore Anatomy text or Robbins & Contrans pathology text. Read your textbooks from cover to cover as many times as possible and do a lot of past questions.
Don't forget to always believe in yourself and your God.

Good write up.

But if you know that Medicine is for you, then you will understand that all these complains are nothing. You have a dream and to achieve the dream you must study hard and stop complaining. Same textbooks are used for both SSCE and JAMB but what makes JAMB stands out is your ability to read between the lines and a bigger understanding of the topics' context which SSCE lacks.

No easy way to success. If you dream of becoming a doctor, then dust your book and start studying

If you say the Jamb books are too bulky
How then do you want ro read textbooks when studying medicine

You better avoid the course altogether as you never ready

and when they graduate as MLS, they'll claim it was their first choice; that medicine never crossed their mind and they'll claim equality with medical doctors by demanding for parity in salary

The cold secret of medical students is....our books are all too bulky, and yes, we wonder also how we go manage finish am before session ends...

Yes, all of us have that fear. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not telling the truth

The trick is to study the 'vital' parts, not to read the whole book.

Plus other courses have severe bulky books. Like LAW for example. cheesy, even other stem courses.
You're right but if a graduate is already seeing Jamb syllabus as bulky, then I sincerely don't think a course like medicine is for that kind of person.

What course did you study in your first degree? If it is one of the biological sciences, then I'll advise you to try direct entry. You won't be required to write JAMB to gain direct entry admission into 200level. All you need to do is study smart and ace your university's post UDE exams.
