Unlike what you people think of masquerades, these daring masquerades move about openly in all towns/cities from September till December ending with cutlass, cane and charms. They drink, get high and then go out to intimidate , flog and even kill at will, act with impunity especially when you don't give money, or you have offended one of them. The masquerades in Akwa Ibom state use machetes, bow and arrows. Some are known to use other dangerous weapons to snatch properties, motorcycles, and even cars. Many of the masquerades are armed robbers. I grew up there, and I know that they had long became a menace to the society.

Akwa Ibom masquerades had long become mini bandits. The earlier they are checked, the better for the society.

Truly, most of our cultural festivals where masquerades are featured have become bastardized as the practitioners exploit them to intimidate, harass, extort and sometimes cause bodily harm on innocent citizens.

A festival ought to showcase our rich cultural heritage, enjoyable and not constitute a threat or nuisance to the citizens.

However, banning them outrightly is extreme and an affront on our African culture.

What should be done is to sensitize the practitioners on the need to moderate the excesses and make them to conform to modern-day realities given our now very cosmopolitan towns and cities.

We were first Africans before being Christians, Muslims or Jews.

the said masquerade caused the untimely death of a young lady, the lady didn't have money so he chased after her and she ran into the main road and got knocked by a speeding car, she died on the spot

If there was no clear definition of what a "masquerade" is, then there could be a problem in the law court. If the so called offense committed is because the guy covered himself, then he should be able to walk away free, as there are several people who cover themselves walking all over the place, except the guy was caught harrassing people in the public.

Nonsense ingredient. The governor didn't ban masquerades. He said play it in your village square or anywhere that public peace will not be disrupted. Don't block major roads , disturb commuters , and cause accidents because you wear mask.

arrest people who are committing atrocities using the masquerade as cover up. Your village get masquerade and it's traditional and ancestral. So this is their time they used to entertain and make money this festive period.

It isn't about the dress code; it's about operating by the laws (The 2022 law put in place already requires police clearance for masquerade displays. Those who wish to celebrate masquerades must restrict the activity to village squares.)
