Thank you @Akinlot. The link you posted is that of the White House, and any top-U.S. government officials can post there. You can see where president Trump is posting " I restricted " Not The U.S. government restricted. Ipso facto, Trump is not a dictator or a military ruler.

To guide you very well, and for emphasis, once Trump proposal is granted by the U.S senate or the White house, they will then post it officially on the U.S. embassy websites located in all countries.

Here is the official website for the U.S. Embassy in Abuja (and Consulate in Nigeria) ng.usembassy.gov, where you can find information on visas, citizen services, appointments, and official announcements,

So, until it is posted on the U.S. embassy website, it is still a proposal.
What do you think about this?

@Efetobore1980; everyone

Please what is your view about the three months visa thing. I have a date for January ending but will not be resuming until July all things being equal. Someone suggested the three months may lapse while I am still here in Nigeria and may need another one before July (N.B All things is on the assumption that I get the visa in January.)

Do you have any experience on this. Grateful for your response.

This is well appreciated and fully understood.

Dont listen to anyone's suggestion (including myself) regarding how U.S. visa stampings and visa duration works, if that person is not a direct staff of USCIS.

Logically, you are suposed to reshdule your present appointment to 3-Months before resumption (May, 2025), and if you failed to do so, then the consular will decide if to place you on 221g or guide you appropriately.

●▪︎ Your interviewing officer must have verified your I-20, and having granted your visa, that means he/she have seen your resumption date, Ipso facto, there will be annotation in your visa to grant you entry whenever you are ready for school (you can travel 3-months prior to school resuming). In whatever situation, please focus on aquiring the visa first.

Dear Omede!

We hope your day is going well.

Less than 24 hours ago, the White House released updated information expanding US travel and visa restrictions to include additional countries, with varying levels of impact across Africa. We understand that immigration-related news can be unsettling, so our goal with this update is to clearly explain what this means for students and outline practical next steps without panic.

What Has Changed

There are now two key categories affecting African students:

1. Countries Under Full Travel Ban (Originally Banned earlier this year)

For some countries newly added to the list (Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen and heightened restrictions on visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela), this represents a full ban, meaning:

 • No new US visas are being issued

 • Entry into the US is not permitted, regardless of purpose (including study) For students from these countries, pursuing US study in the short term is not realistic, and alternative destinations should be prioritised

2. Countries Under Partial Restrictions

(Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Ivory Coast, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia and Zimbabwe.) For countries under partial restriction:

 • US student visas are currently not being issued

 • Even though this is not labelled a “full ban,” the practical effect is the same for new applicants: no visa issuance at this time

 • Timelines for resumption are unclear This distinction matters legally, but from a planning perspective, students should assume no near-term access to U.S. student visas.

3. Recently Banned in the last 24 hours (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria.)

Important Clarifications for African Students: Visa ≠ Entry

Even for students who already hold valid US visas:

• A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States

• Entry is always determined by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the airport.

Holiday Travel Advisory

For students currently enrolled in US institutions who are outside the US for the holidays:

• We strongly advise returning to the US before January 1st

• Re-entry after this date may be complicated or denied, depending on implementation

What We Advise Students to Do Now

1. Do Not Panic, But Do Not Commit Financially

At this stage: Avoid paying non-refundable tuition deposits, avoid housing deposits or long-term financial commitments tied solely to US study, and If you have already been admitted, pause major payments until visa clarity improves

2. Ask Universities for Flexibility

Students should proactively: Request admission deferrals, ask for deposit extensions, and inquire about holding offers without penalty. Many universities are already aware of these developments and are preparing contingency options.

3. Reassess US Study Plans for This Cycle

Even if restrictions are eventually lifted, visa backlogs are likely to be significant, interview availability will not normalize immediately, and processing delays could push timelines well beyond intended start dates.

Practically speaking, pursuing US study this year should not be the primary plan for affected students.

4. Actively Explore Alternative Destinations

This is the most important step right now.

Given the current uncertainty, we strongly encourage you to keep your options open by actively exploring strong study destinations outside the U.S., including Canada, the UK, Europe, and selected African and global pathway programs. For now, US study is best viewed as a longer-term option rather than an immediate plan. Diversifying your choices helps reduce both emotional and financial risk.

Some alternatives that may be a good fit include Vlerick Business School (Belgium), BI Business School (Norway), and Lancaster University Ghana (for undergradua

Is there anyone who has gone for H1B stamping recently or have a visa appointment between now and 31st of December?

If your interview is after January 1,2026, the date the new travel ban goes into effect, they'll find you unqualified for a visa due to the ban, If I was you, I'd postpone the interview, so you can prolong your visa fee, I think you can postpone for up to one year from the time of payment, maybe within that time, someone will file a lawsuit in the US that'll halt the order.

What are the implications for someone already scheduled for visa interview[/quote]

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by Nobody:
I also have another F2 interview scheduled for January 5th. It is well.

Do you think rescheduling to December 2025 makes sense?

Waiting until after the ban takes effect is very risky. For instance, my January 5th interview will almost certainly be canceled, and I will then attempt to schedule a new appointment during the active suspension. So, I think it may be better to move the appointment to a date before the ban begins (i.e., in December 2025).

Any thoughts on this?

A university. They were updating all international students that applied. Even some that has even gotten admission.

If you happen to see a December date I'd say do so

Consulate can not issue F2 visas from Jan1 2026.
Its a travel ban for entry to the US

Its really sad cos even those who are students and their F1 visas have expired, they can not renew their visas in their home countries because visa won't be issued.

A presidential proclamation isn’t a proposal though. It doesn’t say proclamations have to go through Congress or Supreme Court approval. I’m confused.

Don't reschedule your appointment ! Rescheduling to December 2025 does not make sense until you receive an official message from the embassy.

Dont allow the ongoing hullabaloo to forced you into making the decision you will regret later.

If at all this proposal succeeds, visas will still be issued and appointment will continue to hold. It is called " Temporary Restrictions" Not " Total Visa Ban".

Wait for the U.S embassy (through AVITS amentum) to send you updated message. If you did not receive any such message pls go ahead with your January interview.

I haven't been myself since yesterday that I read this. I'm a prospective graduate student planning to resume for fall 2026. I have spent money and put in alot of efforts, now all my dream of studying in the US has faded away.

I applied to more than 10 US schools and my recommenders submitted over 40 recommendations. All these efforts just in vain.

I have been depressed since yesterday.

Pls take it easy with yourself. Did your school email you that they have canceled your admission ? Or has the U.S. embassy canceled your visa appointment ? Dont be depressed because nothing has happened to your dream. Pls dont commit suicide and dont cancel your plan. You are only displaying a self-inflicted trauma, so talk to a counselor , imam or your church pastor..
All my applications are currently under review before the restriction. I read that it means they won't even bother to go through Nigerians admission documents, it's automatic rejection because of the VISA issue.

The people of like minds that I can talk to are currently processing admission too and we are all worried.

My environment? Those people aren't even approachable, their mentality is somehow. Just an environment full of yahoo boys and runs girls.

Thanks so much sir. I have started 5 Erasmus Mundus Scholarship application already.

But US is my best choice and first option.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by Vanjori: 2:04pm On Dec 18, 2025
My brother, if you need someone to talk to,you can email me.

Here is what my supervisor told me, he said I should still submit my application and wait. The school can still give you admission into your program if you qualify but if the visa ban is not lifted, you will need to defer the admission to the next semester.

This means that if the visa ban is not lifted before the semester you intend to study (fall 2026), you are to defer to spring 2027.

Note that most school call only allow differing once.

At this point everyone should just encourage themselves.

😎 What a funny dude.

Where ever you read that they wont bother to read or process Nigerians admission please run away from that source because they are misleading and brainwashing people.

Tell your people of like mind to not worry, otherwise that means all of you are like puppets that can easily be confused and pushed into pitfall.

You can survive in any environment, you just have to create the surviival instincts. Maintain your best choice and first option. Dont settle for less.
It is well.
I actually understand you sir. I'm optimistic!

Thanks sir.

Can you stop misinforming people. The Proclamation is very clear - as from jan 1 2026, no student visa or visitor visa will be issued to Nigerians all over the world. Face the reality and stop giving people false hope.

You are proudly ignorant. I have read some of your posts saying the proclamation will be debated by 'White House'. Who exactly is White house?

You dont have to be confused if you know what you are typing. All you have to do is to lecture me in the area of government. I did some government and history during my school days, so your opinion is welcome.

I just named president Trump's a proposal ironically because he has utter thousands of proclamation which ended up being discarded by the supreme court or white house. Besides, no president can proclaim this kind of national isssues with full authority, except he is a dictator or a military ruler.

Government is wide, pls dont let us go there. See below the AI summary of presidential proclamation.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by JohnZak: 3:50pm On Dec 18, 2025
I suggest you take a step back and focus on the things that you can control. Stressing out about things that you can't control will not move the needle even one bit. No university is going to stop reviewing applications for students from certain countries because that country is on a "banned" or "restricted" list. Their international office can share the information from the WH with students from these countries so that they are aware but they won't stop reviewing any application because of it. It might even be illegal to do so because they are not supposed to take any action (adverse or favorable) based solely on race, gender, "national origin", religion, etc.

It is even possible/likely that these restrictions may be eased in a few months. The U.S. embassy and consulate in Nigeria generates a lot of money for the US government, especially with B1/B2, F1, and J visas. In the meantime, you can look at universities in other countries like it seems you are doing. Good luck!
