Ondo Deep Sea Port To Serve Nigeria, West Africa — Aiyedatiwa by WizardOfNG(op): 9:26am On Dec 19, 2025
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said the proposed Ondo Deep Sea Port will serve as a major hub for international trade, benefiting not only Ondo State but Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

The governor spoke after receiving the revalidated licence for the project from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola.

Aiyedatiwa said the state government is fully prepared to commence the project, describing the port as critical infrastructure that goes beyond state-level use and positions Ondo as a gateway for international business and maritime operations.

He noted that the deep sea port is designed to support industries, commerce and the broader economy, with facilities capable of accommodating businesses across Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

According to the governor, the port has a natural draught of about 18 metres, which would allow very large vessels—larger than those currently operating in Lagos ports—to berth easily.

He explained that the port’s depth and size would eliminate the need for trans-shipment, as vessels would be able to sail directly into Ondo State waters.

Aiyedatiwa said the project would have far-reaching economic benefits beyond cargo handling, stressing that once construction begins, the state would witness increased human and commercial activities.

He added that the influx of investors, financial institutions and humanitarian service providers would also boost hospitality and related sectors in the state.

The governor expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for fast-tracking the revalidation of the port’s licence, describing it as a significant step toward realising the long-awaited project.

Ports, Ports, Ports.

It is good to build Ports if it is absolutely needed.

However, I don't believe a modern new port will completely transform the economy of an area like Apapa Ports did for Lagos.

Lekki Ports is a good example. Despite handling hundreds of billions of imports and exports, you won't even know there is a port there when you drive past it.

The largest port in the UK is in a town many people in the UK have never heard about. The 2nd largest port is in very small town of about 25,000 people most people have never heard of.

Same with the largest port in France.

Modern Ports operate like a transit point. Goods arrive, your truck comes, picks it up, and head straight out of the port, so no endless waiting in or around Lagos, no hotel accommodation needed etc The is even no need for hundreds (or thousands in the case of Apapa) of warehouses as truck move in and out of modern Ports so quickly, they are able to leave the port town within 2 hours and head for their destination without stopping in the port town for anything.

So the economic impact of a modern port on the area it is located is minimal.

This is not an argument for not building Ports. They should be built only where they are needed.

I just think people have an exaggerated expectation of the transformational impact of a modern port.

Port enables export not just from import. Export is cheaper with competitive prices. Instead of going through Lagos. We should have as many ports as we can and prioritize export more than import benefits

So they've "revalidated the licence" again? From Mimiko to Akeredolu, now Aiyedatiwa , same story, no port. Ondo's roads are death traps, workers are owed, but they're dreaming of serving West Africa? This is just another audio project and a conduit pipe for contracts. The only "influx" will be for land speculators and politicians' pockets. Until we see a ship actually berth, park all this "gateway" grammar. We've heard it all before.

Ondo actually has the deepest seashore in Nigeria but I don't trust this man of a governor. He lies too much. Yesterday was a phantom refinery, today is seaport, tomorrow is going to be another lamba, probably bitumen.

Person wey never complete ordinary township road since he became governor, shey na him go build seaport? 🤥🤥 Dey play.
