I’m not denying Nigeria has courts, elections, markets, or regulators. Of course it does. My point isn’t existence...it’s reliability and primacy.

In Nigeria, courts function, but patronage often resolves disputes faster than law. Elections occur, but outcomes are regularly contested through power-brokering, not just institutions. Capital markets exist, yet serious capital hedges offshore because enforcement risk is assumed. Value is produced, yes..but the most upwardly mobile Nigerians still plan around exit, not reinvestment.

What, in the inherent make-up of black SA before the advent of white SA suggest they could natively give rise to those institutions, or the governance and the processes required? Something none of the other African tribes\nations have been able to achieve - individually or collectively.

Is there anything you can point to, if only nascent or embryonic, prior to the arrival of white SA, that suggests these structures would have arisen without white SA. Or alternatively, anything within the antecedents of the white SA that suggests wherever they rocked up, those infrastructures would not have followed - like night follows day - with or without black SA?

You whole-chestedly claim "joint enterprise" in what are clearly the artefacts of a colonialist\apartheid regime. Albeit, a regime with the make-up to build those systems. To be clear, I do not see anything that suggests the SA of recent decades was ever a partnership in the building. I stand to be corrected - if you can evidence otherwise.

Having said that you get 2 shots. You see Nigeria (and I'd guess other African countries post-colonialism), also had these same artefacts in place. From functioning railways stations (I've seen tickets) to working bureaucracies and administrative frameworks. But as inherency took a hold - nepotism, tribalism, sectarianism, clannishness, mediocrity, malfeasance and wholesale corruption - the frameworks, the structures and the governance were all degraded. And now, we are where we are.

Two shots I said, because all that has to be done to obviate the ask to evidence the joint-enterprise (and shut me up ), and gainsay all the vitriol around black SA being xenophobic, lazy, servile etc., is too maintain those artefacts - at the least.

In a simplistic way, it can be seen as SA simply coming to the end of colonialism\apartheid later, so having the artefacts for that much longer.

No precolonial society......European or African—built modern liberal democracy. It emerged from industrial capitalism, class struggle, print culture, and legal rationalism.

Southern Africa’s precolonial systems matter only in one way: they showed non-absolutist authority:

*consultative forums (kgotla, imbizo)
*decentralised power
*social accountability

They did not predict parliaments. Neither did Magna Carta predict Westminster. Adaptation under pressure, not cultural prophecy, is what matters.

Point 3: Why South Africa didn’t implode
Nigeria and others inherited infrastructure. So what?

The difference is political economy:

South Africa retained:

*a broad tax base
*diversified industry
*organised labour as a counterweight
*courts with residual legitimacy

Nigeria’s oil rents allowed elites to rule without consent. South Africa’s elites never had that option. They still require compliance....from workers, courts, capital, and voters. That friction prevents total capture.

This is not virtue. It is constraint.

Point 4: Post-apartheid institutions matter
South Africa did not just inherit institutions—it rebuilt and expanded them after 1994:

*a supreme constitution with enforceable rights
*a powerful Constitutional Court
*Chapter 9 watchdogs (Auditor-General, IEC, Public Protector)
*a disciplined National Treasury
*a credible electoral system

Infrastructure expansion followed:
*mass electrification
*large-scale housing delivery
*expanded water, roads, and transport systems

Corruption weaken these gains....but the key point is this: they exist, resist capture, and periodically correct course. Many states never reached that baseline.

Point 5: Xenophobia isn’t civilisational collapse. Violence around immigration reflects economic stress + mass migration + weak local governance. The same pattern appears in Europe, the US, Brazil, and Chile.

What disproves civilisational failure is this: South Africa’s core institutions still function. Courts intervene. Elections remove governments. Audits expose theft. Civil society mobilises.

That endurance is not racial. It comes from a post-apartheid civic identity tied to the state itself. When the state is threatened, resistance comes from across society.

Point 6: Pan-Africanism without states is noise.Pan-Africanism fails because it skips the hardest step: building accountable states first.
