Peter Dama takes a deep breath before saying slowly: “Yes. Rice price has crashed, and Nigerians are benefiting. But as local producers, we are losing big.

We are losing billions. “ He singles out import duty waiver to select importers, which has flooded markets across the country with imported rice and crashed price, but to which local producers of the staple food are losing big, as the main cause of their woes.

Local producers are losing significantly because their products cannot compete with cheaply imported rice, largely due to the high cost of production. From the tone of Dama’s voice, you can understand his disappointment that the business in which he and his colleagues have invested massively doesn’t appear to be giving them the returns they envisaged.

“Go to the market, you will see that rice has flooded the entire place. We have always said that importation should be stopped. “For rice, through what they call import waivers, to continue to flood our markets, to crash prices, it should be stopped”, he says as he raises his voice. Sunday Vanguard had visited him in his rice mill to get his perspective on the crash of the price of rice as Christmas approaches. Rice sells like hot cake as Christmas looms every year

Illiteracy 101.

The topic is talking about how local farmers are losing because the high cost of production in Nigeria has made imported rice to be less expensive than local rice.

What is responsible for the high cost of production? Tinubu's incompetence.

The topic is about cheap rice during festive season. Simple reading of the topic and period we are in should have given you a clue, but alas hatred and self loathing will not allow you.

The local farmers who held Nigerians hostage when there was ban on imported rice. They can cry all they want. If they can't compete with imported rice let them close shop. Besides most Nigerians like me prefer local rice but if the imported rice will keep the price of local rice down it's a win win for the masses.

Local farmers, middle men and mill owners held Nigerians to Ransome . I have no pity for them. Opportunity was given for investment, rather greed set in angry

Buhari gave subsidiaries to them, they diverted the products to Niger after harvest and increase the little ones that was left behind. Rabiu Abdulsamad of BUA has been telling them many months ago that they will soon cry blood because they are ready to crash the price of rice soon as they have been backed by FG to crash the price. They thought he was joking. They should enjoy their own time of wailing. If not, bag of rice in this festive period would have been close to 120k. Wicked people. Same faith awaits all those filling stations. Their petrol will soon dry up from the tank.

If important is cheaper than the so call local produce, then importation should be encourage the more.

Why will government stop importation to the detriment of the Citizens. Does that make Economic sense?

...on a lighter note,Nigeria is a case in study, whenever there is a slight increment in petroleum, everything skyrockets but as soon as there is slight reduction in its price, the prices of things and transport fares remains the same. I could remember that Dangote reduced the price of fuel and even importers did same but I am sure that transport fares never went down. The price of rice has come down a bit but I am sure that our restaurants still sell a plate of rice at same old price or even more.
Nigerians,what is happening?
