I've bought a few toks cars for use over the last 2 decades you simply carry out your findings about the car, then after the purchase you can ask the dealer to help with the registration, use a genuine car shop with a address .they will register and get you all the required papers and plate number, might cost you an extra 100k or more.

the dealer is not likely to mess up except he wants to ruin his car biz

Also go get a police clearance to buy a phone. Also get a police clearance to buy food stuffs from the market cos there are many stolen food items in the market
I swear. And a lot of stolen phones too, second hand used phones. Unless you are buying brand new carton sealed from a reputable store

Good evening fam.
Please I have some money that I want to use and buy a tokumbo car but I'm afraid at the rate people get into trouble for buying a stolen car in Nigeria. So, I want to ask the legal gurus and the experienced ones in th house. Is there any customer protection paper that is obtainable from the police to attest that I actually bought the car and not stolen in case of eventuality?

Mods please do the needful
you don't need police report

Things to look out for

If its rediculous cheap: run

Buy from a credible seller

Check car history n original papers not photocopies

You don't need any clearance to buy a car. Just ensure that you buy from a legitimate dealer with a bona fide office address and make sure you get all the relevant documents from the dealer.
The OP should avoid people like this in his life because advice like this has lead many into serious trouble or even jail time.
How many people have been sold illegal items even under a legitimate address from a legitimate dealer

* The court affidavit and police report will be used as protection if trouble later comes up
* Also, anyone trying to sell you an illegal item will think twice when he hears court affidavit and police report

It's comes with custom duty import ,port clearance etc. Then u go and do court affidavit. Then take d affidavit to d nearest police station for police report.
Then take all these to inland revenue to get vehicle registration number. Then go to VIO office for vehicle inspection and they will paste their sticker on your vehicle if u pass.
All these processes will cost a lot of money

Sometimes these people do fake to make more profit. I went to renew my sister car number plate in inland revenue after 4years she had been driving it and paying a guy for renewal every year just to discover that the vehicle number is not on the system .
Thats bad. But you have to be sure you are dealing with a some one who is a legit staff.

A VIO officer can do all this for you too.

I think before buying any car whether Tokunbo or Naija used you must carry out due diligence to ascertain the authenticity of the vehicle.
In my case before buying the Tokunbo of my choice, I asked for the VIN and sent it to a paid recommended vehicle vin decoder service, with in 30min they sent to my email the history and report of the car. Everything you need to know, accidented (major or minor), stolen or not, last recorded odometer, what the car was used for (whether for hire or private use, how many hands have used it before placed for bid, or purchase) etc.
I mean everything about the car will be revealed.
I also engaged recommended customs services on vehicles online to ascertain duty payment, I needed to verify if duty was actually paid and other customs papers like vehicle inspection report at the point of customs examination, Exit note, etc before thinking of purchasing the car. I demanded for the customs duty paper from the seller and secretly verified it with what I got from the independent service.
After the due diligence, and I was satisfied everything was OK, I then proceeded to buy the car, No need for anything police. Or you think police will cover you to buy stolen car?

The final step was to register the car for plate number and all other car papers.
I find this bolded part very hilarious, you secretly verified customs duty paper given you by same person you're doing it in secret against?

I'm not understanding o, what did you assume was his intent on giving it to you in the first place, to use it and wrap suya? 😂

You don't need a police report to buy a Tokunbo car. You only need it for Nigeria used car.

You are 100 percent wrong because no known law in Nigeria demands you to obtain a police clearance to buy a car.

A car is like any other properties any citizens can have and all you need is to buy a car and register it at the appropriate official registration office.

Even the police contact these offices for inquiries.

Cheers.

🧑‍🎄🧑‍🎄
you may be right too, but am telling you what I am 100 % sure of ,those registration officials will still help you to get it like I say 100 % sure they will help you get police report and they work together with police if you buy bike you will do it sef or maybe they are not doing it like that in your own state ooo but in my base that is how they do it

Please police report is not a necessity for car registration, if you are doubting me, please contact the police online inquiries in Abuja.

I almost reported a police officer who asked me for that on my way to Abuja few months ago.

Stop supporting what is not legally accepted.

No buy for roadside, any serious dealer should have a car stand or an affiliate car stand should incase something goes wrong we know where to start. No dealer with 100 cars at his stand will risk his reputation because of your car. Most things are just comon sense.

You misunderstood me. Some dealers will only release the vehicle documents at the point of purchase of the car. Especially those with question mark, because they know will verify. I even verified the vreg!
