I got tired of MMF and switched a portion of my fund to the Cardinalstone equity fund last week, where I've made far more than my MMF would have in a month or more.
You are taking a higher risk, so you deserve the higher return. Its all about risk appetite.

Eventhough you took risk. People like you are the real investors.

Salute to you sir. I doff my hat for you.

Keep in mind, you holding a risky investment, so keep an eye on the ASI everyday like how you monitor MMF returns everyday. The moment it falls below the usual dip, sell off your equity quickly before you come online to ask any question.

When you sure that ASI is recovering, go in and buy more equity again.

Anybody that is so scared of investing in money market funds can never invest in any asset, better keep your money with your bank or keep it under your mattress.

Every body cannot be wealthy or gain financial freedom in life.
Re: Mutual Funds by Nobody: 4:07pm On Dec 26, 2025
Yes, I'm always monitoring the NGX daily; however, since the market transitioned to a T+2 (Trade Date + 2 days) settlement cycle for equities, my returns have been bullish. Nevertheless, once drama erupts, I gonna cash out and move back to MMF.

That T+2 policy was implemented last week. That single policy made the market more liquid so people decided to invest even their Christmas money that's why the market got bullish.

Enjoy your wins now and be smart to flee when ASI drops beyond recognizable pattern.

I once invested in equity and I lost everything in few weeks, and swore never again... I felt so bad and was inspired to write a book on "The Iniquities Of Equity"

I will not advise anyone to try it as a newbie but if anyone dares takes that risk at it, I pay utmost respect to them because they are the real investor.

As a newbie, never go all in only on equity, Do a balanced fund instead or do ETF, probably Stanbic ETF 30.
Re: Mutual Funds by enque(f): 4:36pm On Dec 26, 2025
Been using them for about 2 years, and here is my observation so far;

-First time onboarding took almost 2 weeks before I could start using the app/services. Response was pretty slow.
- I've only had issues with funds deposit once, and it was sometime in October. Crediting my mmf account took 5 days, despite the fact that I did a transfer around 8am the said day. Had to call their CS lines severally before I could get my funds in my account.
Prior to this experience, crediting my account had been seamless and same day.
- I haven't tried withdrawal yet, so I can't speak to that.

Nakedman:
Hello Enque, Do you use First bank asset management? If yes, what rating would you give them in terms of customer service?
I am about to open an account with them

What is difference between balanced fund & mmf risk wise? I heard investors always find it hard to liquidate their Nigeria ETF, I don't think such investment is advisable.

Balanced fund is MMF + Equity, some fund manager add bond. As per risk, When equity is bleeding red, it could affect your gains from MMF and possibly reducing your total fund value.

So MMF is more safer because, your capital never gets affected on a bad day or good days.

MMF is you trading the country economy.

Equity is you trading the country's companies.

ETF is you trading only selected few companies with good balance sheets all in one basket.

Balanced fund is you trading anything and everything tradable in the country.

Losing all of your money in an "equity fund" is subject to market conditions and the efficiency of the fund managers. However, I've noticed that if you have a large amount, your gains will almost certainly outweigh your losses over time.

You will really smile next year.

My pick for this week is Stanbic and Nigeria breweries, go find out why I picked them.

funny enough, this experience of yours can happen with any of the providers. It's only an issue when it's regular.

Key Factors That Determine Where You Invest Your Money

It will be sincere to acknowledge that it will be difficult to use absolute terms to say that a regulated investment is bad or good. There are many factors to consider before you go into a particular investment instrument.

Making sound investment decisions requires an understanding of several personal and market-related factors. These include:

Risk Appetite
This refers to your ability and willingness to tolerate losses. Generally, investments with higher risk offer the potential for higher returns, while lower-risk investments tend to offer more stable but modest returns.

Investment Objective
What do you want to achieve? Your goal may be short-term (e.g., liquidity, income) or long-term (e.g., wealth creation, retirement). Your objective largely determines the appropriate investment vehicle.

Experience and Knowledge
Your level of financial literacy and market experience often influences investment outcomes. Better knowledge typically improves decision-making and risk management.

Age
Younger investors can usually afford to take more risk due to longer investment horizons. As investors grow older, it is often advisable to gradually shift toward more conservative investments to preserve capital.

Funds Available for Investment
The amount of capital you have can determine the type and structure of investments accessible to you. Some investments require significant capital, while others allow small, incremental participation.

Investment Duration (Time Horizon)
Time plays a critical role in investing. In most cases, longer investment durations allow for compounding and better absorption of market volatility, potentially leading to higher returns.

Note: While these principles are generally applicable, there are always exceptions to the norms.

Common Forms of Investment
Real Estate
Stocks (Equities)
Mutual Funds ( MMF, equity, balance, fixed income, etc). Among the mutual funds, it's only the MMF that promises guaranteed return of capital and varied returns on capital; others have no guaranteed capital or returns.
Treasury Bills
Bonds
Commercial Papers
etc

Final Note
The primary aim of investment is to make a profit/returns. However, some of the factors and types of investment, as stated above, now determine the level of your profit/returns.

Investment is dynamic, so before you pick a particular instrument to invest in, or move from one form to another, consider the above factors; it's part of due diligence to make before settling for a particular investment.

Professionally, it's advised for an investor to diversify, but start with what your risk appetite agrees with before attempting other forms of investment as your knowledge increases and confidence gets stronger; but be sure opportunities always abound in the investment space.

It’s been a great year for equity funds generally though, unlike last year. If you jumped in back in January, you’d likely be up about 50% or more right now.

Also, for equity fund it's not advisable to try timing the market, time in the market is what builds wealth. Unless a total market collapse is certain, moving in and out of funds usually does more harm than good. Equity funds are a long-term play, when the market dips, don't sell. Buy more. That’s how real gains are made. So it's best to put capital you can leave for 5 - 10 years.

I get your point, what you basically trying to explain is Dollar/Naira Cost Averaging.

It's another strategy. However, the sad news is Nigeria market isn't like the U.S market.

You can decide to hold a growth or penny stock that has lost value over the years and doing the "cost averaging strategy", and when you think you have made profit. You won't be able to sell the stock.

why?

Because no market volume for that stock, you only see your gains but you can't sell.

This is the same reason most Nigeria stocks are still undervalued below their true value especially when you check the company balance sheet and growth potential for the future.

Edited

I need to clarify that, that lack of volume should change when institutional investors comes to play in the Nigeria Equity space. But for now retail investors are the once who trade most of Nigeria stocks.

my two friends and i are planning to be saving certain of amount of money monthly into mutual funds for a long time. We want a structure similar to a joint account, where all three of us have access to the account and no one can withdraw funds without the others being aware. We would also like each person to set up an automatic monthly direct debit from their personal bank account into the investment account.

Please, is there any platform that currently offers this kind of setup, or what would anyone recommend as the best way to go about it?

At some point, there might arise an issue so pressing that one person will need the investment liquidated or some unforseen circumstances may arise.

Did you guys seek the counsel of a probate general lawyer in the case that one of you dies, who inherits the portion of the deceased or continues with the investment?

What is the end goal of this contribution and the sharing formula after all the accrued unaccounted compound interest?

This type of contribution only works best if all parties involved contribute within a specific period of time, pool money together to buy an expensive landed property in a highbrow area where property resale value doubles or triple in resale value.

When the time is right after the land has appreciated, Sell the landed property and everyone get their cut of the money.

Then each of you can decide how best to invest personal profit.

This is only my take and my opinion, NOT an advice.
