We know. But in the street, we know all SUVs as jeep. So Lexus SUV is known as Lexus jeep, Peugeot SUV is known as Peugeot jeep.
The jeep brand of car is not really popular to the average guy wey dey sell pure water for ariaria market.
Re: FRSC!!! There Is No Such Thing As A Lexus Jeep by Proudlyngwa(m):
When FRSC released the message, was the message gotten by the general populace or not, try explaining to a layman an SUV crashed.

In Nigeria the popular brand becomes the generic name

Leave am for us like that.

I wasn't even aware Sellotape and Super Glue are actual brand names. I always assumed these are the names of the products themselves.

I agree. Biko let them keep using the generic names for the Nigerian audience to avoid confusing us. The international media can add 'sic' when reporting our reportage abeg. 😁😁Country is hard enough as it is.
Sellotape --- Adhesive tape
Super Glue ----Glue

Me sef dey among grin

All for just enlightenment. If you can communicate in English e don do b dat..

They are correct , note that they used the small letter "j" (Lexus jeep) and not (Lexus Jeep)

jeep" (lowercase) and "Jeep" (uppercase) is capitalization, but in context, "Jeep" refers to the brand, while "jeep" often describes any similar off-road vehicle (a generic term for a 4x4), though Jeep is the company that popularized the term, offering various models like the Wrangler (rugged) vs. Grand Cherokee (luxury/family
Both you and FRSC are wrong.
What are you saying? So if I say I flew on a Boeing 777 jet from Lagos to pH, and a boeing A330 from Lagos to Benin , I will be correct even though A330 is by Airbus? So just because they look alike and I changed the B to b, I will be right? Nigerians sef. Jeep is a brand, full stop. It doesn't matter if you used a small or capital letters all through

In Nigeria, it's super common for dominant brand names to become generic terms for entire product categories, a phenomenon called "genericide" or genericization. This happens when a brand dominates the market so much that people forget (or ignore) the actual generic name.

Here are some classic examples:

Jeep → Refers to any SUV or 4x4 vehicle (e.g., Toyota Prado, Lexus RX, or Honda CR-V is casually called a "Jeep"wink. This stems from early rugged vehicles like Willys Jeeps being iconic on Nigerian roads, especially in military/government use.
Indomie → Used for any instant noodles, even brands like Mimee, Honeywell, Golden Penny, or Dangote Noodles.
Maggi → Means any seasoning/stock cubes (bouillon), regardless of brands like Knorr, Royco, or Terra.
Gala → Refers to any sausage roll snack.
Dettol → Any antiseptic/disinfectant liquid.
Hypo (or sometimes Jik) → Any household bleach.
Pampers → Any disposable baby diapers.
Vaseline → Any petroleum jelly.
Omo → Any laundry detergent powder.
Close-Up or Macleans → Any toothpaste (varies by generation/region).
Sellotape → Any clear adhesive tape.
Super Glue → Any fast-acting cyanoacrylate adhesive.
👍

GST 101 - Use of English

Dr Jeff that year

That’s why school isn’t a scam

When addressing global audience, use universal language, widely known words that can easily be understood by everyone

Every Nigeria understand what our road safety official meant by Lexus Jeep, but internationally it’s was a confusing statement if someone in US is reading the report

OPis both correct and wrong at the same time. While there's a an American vehicle manufacturer named Jeep (manufacturers of Grand Cherokee, Wrangler etc), the word Jeep has become a global generic term for off-road vehicles. It is not a misnomer to refer to the Lexus SUV as a Lexus Jeep! However, it should be NOTED THAT THIS COLLOQUIAL ENGLISH and not standard English. Overall, FRSC ought to have known better and called it Lexus SUV since it was offering an official statement.

There is no such thing as a jeep to describe a model of a vehicle... they are all called SUV.... some of u will even call the smaller ones " baby jeep" .... even jeep wrangler is called an off road vehicle .. . There is no such thing as a vehicle classified as a jeep.... its non existence.... whether small letter J or big letter J... Jeep only make off roads and SUVs ... its just like calling the lexus SIV , lexus land rover ... Jeep is a car brand and not a type.of classified vehicle as u have claimed
