➜Then maybe we should start from there and not the barbaric place you jumped into? did you even ask if they have a police station? or possibly 12 community sharing 1 court room?
You are the one literally ignoring their existence in claiming that barbarism should be allowed. Most of these communities have existed for many decades without a police station right in front of the gates of the members, so I am not certain why you are suddenly making an issue of this now, particularly to excuse nonsense. undecided

you're dodging Mr man.
Who can enforce the law aside law enforcers?
or do you think you or just anybody have legal right to detain a person?

How do you enforce rules when you have no prisons, no police, no courts??

You need to go and read about customary laws.

A legal law supersede only when the resources are available.

None of us are from that village, we barely know what they have access to.

I rest my case.

What century and exact year are we in again?

This reminds me of when Okonkwo was banished from his village Umuofia for seven years after he accidentally killed a clansman, Ezeudu's son, during a funeral gun salute in Chapter 13 of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, a crime against the earth goddess requiring exile to his mother's village, Mbanta, for purification.

Chinua Achebe, may you continue to RIP
Actually, the writer didn't intend it to be taken literally as a mistake like you understand it. It was a foreboding of other misfortunes to follow Okonkwo and warning on why to avoid the unfortunate wink

2. You conveniently forgot to mention that is against the will and freedoms of those being banished. undecided

2. You prevent reprisal attacks by making sure the authorities are aware of the possibility and ensuring anyone responsible for such acts will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, not punish the potential victims of said attacks by telling them they can no longer live in the neighborhood. 🥱🥱🥱

3. It is also illegal . So what in the world is this conversation for? 🥱🥱
Apart from the incorrect information you diligently like to spew all over digital space, for 2 of 2, one ought to be aware, security conscious, and not naive. Both the perpetrator and family deserve instant banishment forever. The boy sef suppose dey receive better slap and knock as he leaves the village.

Don't be too quick to belittle others because you are in a faceless forum with them. I asked a question if Nigeria had facilities for handling minors involved in crimes and you started throwing a tantrum about "age" and remand homes. I asked this because cases abound were kids were put in the same jail/prison cell with hardened criminals. This won't have happened if your justice system is working well and the government actually have functional remand homes for minors. A good example is the case of the boy who stood in front of Obi’s convoy who was freed after three months in detention. Like I mentioned in some other place, the supposed banishment is much better than lynching that would have been the case in some other place. This will give the family the opportunity to seek redress and reconciliation...
Pretty sure i started the post with remand homes wink

First of all, this is illegal nonsense and should not be encouraged. Second, I hope the boy who pushed the kids in the river has been charged and maybe even arrested, depending on the circumstances. 🥱🥱

The family that is supposedly being banished could actually sue the community for this. I don't know why in 2025, Nigerian communities still cling to barbarian practices. 🥱🥱
Now Banish them go where exactly? To Ibadan?

and outrage have gripped Isiagu community in Awka, Anambra State, after a tragic incident claimed the lives of two young siblings.

The children were reportedly pushed into a river by a fellow youth while searching for firewood, leading to their untimely deaths. In the aftermath, the alleged suspect’s parents have been banished from the community, sparking intense debate over justice, tradition, and communal responsibility in Nigeria.

The heartbreaking story has left residents in mourning and raised serious questions about accountability and safety.
The news blog says all three were siblings while the Nairaland post states a youth threw two siblings into the river. These discrepancies in the two stories have further thrown we the readers and the entire community into confusion.

Don't even know what to say?....but why banish the parents??
Because they are poor.
Would they have done so if the parents of the mumu boy were rich?

I love their traditional justice system, train your children well so that they won't bring you shame, all of you saying is 21 century are not serious, this is the excuse people give when they do abominable things in the name of woke 21 century.

Banishment and shaming is part of African tradition, there must be a reason why they are being banished with or without their son

Aswear, this action is insane. This is one of the cultural practices that needs to be abolished.

This underscores how the Igbos abhor any form of killings. Some other climes are good at slaughtering people like animals

Even though it's barbaric I still find it good
Until we take things right we won't get it right
I read some comments saying it's bad .... But when we see China kill government officials over corruption we will want same for Nigeria right

Back then any armed robber caught will be taking to his or her village square and be shot dead right
But because of evil mind that has spread across we left ll those things and every one wants to be a thief overnight
And more so some parents are not ready to train just to give birth to nusiance in the public

It will serve a great lesson to kids that want to be parents

That will not hold water! It is unconstitutional! Banishment has been declared unconstitutional by our courts.
Re: Couple Banished In Anambra After Their Son Pushed 2 Siblings Into River by Neverlookback: 9:27am On Dec 31, 2025
You do realize this was only possible because this family is poor, right? If this were a well to do family, this so called "African culture" reaction wouldn't have happened.

Just like most Nigerian laws, most traditional laws in Nigeria are only meant for the poor.
Originalsly:
What is Barbarian about this? ...you see Barbarism in the penalty but not the act. If the parents raised their son right there was no need for this. Police and prison were never part of African culture ... what's wrong with practicing our own? It's called accountability.... not fit to live amongst others ....banishment. I still strongly believe the murderer should've been forced to eat at least one bowl of heaping hot peppers before being banished.

If the child is a minor there isn't much anyone can do about that. I don't know if Nigeria has facilities for the trial and rehabilitation of deviant minors. Lastly, if your kid is known for causing trouble and you failed to address and curtail his excesses. One day you may be held responsible for his escapades.
there is. We have juvenile delinquent centres

The suspect's parents have nothing to do with the incident na. Why not arrest him and leave his parents out of it.
