Actually, any SUV can be called a jeep, based on how the name originated. General Purpose (GP or jeep) vehicle was the name the U.S military gave these vehicles for their off road capabilities.

You might be right, but on other side, Jeep is brand car name like HONDA, TOYOTA AND the rest. Jeep models are: cheeroke(not sure of the spelling), wrangler, liberty and commander. Just like Honda : civic, city, prelude, accord, hrv, crv, passport, pilot and Ridgeline.

Sure, Jeep is a brand name. That wasn't the name it was called between 1941-45, though. This brand name was trademarked by Willy, the manufacturer, after WWII, due to the popularity of the name during the war, and, of course, with the U.S being victorious in that war. It still doesn't negate the fact that off road SUVs can be indirectly called jeeps, since that's what they really are, going by the original intention.

You see, this is the problem with dual nationality. Exacerbated if the issues surround important figures.
You have to address both the local and foreign audiences and this can be an issue.

We all know what they are saying here in Nigeria. But I think they should think about the victim:s other constituency which tends to be a bit more...involved.

I tire for Nigerians matter. All noodles are indomie, all toothpastes are Macleans, all SUVs are Jeep. Jeep is a brand name of an SUV. Even if ignorant Nigerians are making that mistake, government officials, people in the media shouldn't.

Any SUV that does not have the brand name jeep on it is NOT a jeep

In Japan the Lexus vehicle was not sold in the beginning as Lexus
They continued to be sold with the Toyota badge in Japan and were cheaper

So it was possible to buy the same car in Japan take it abroad and change the badge

Here’s the short history:

1989: Lexus was launched, but only for overseas markets, especially the United States.

At that time, Toyota sold its luxury cars inside Japan under different Toyota names (like Crown, Celsior, Aristo), not as “Lexus.”

Reason: Toyota wanted Lexus to feel like a special export luxury brand and didn’t want it competing with its existing high-end Toyota models in Japan.

What changed?

2005: Toyota officially introduced the Lexus brand in Japan

Dedicated Lexus dealerships were opened

Models were rebranded (e.g., Toyota Celsior → Lexus LS)
