Please will the new tax laws affect our Treasury bill investments? Because you know our TBills investments are in the million millions if not running in billions, as you know they are targeting funds that drops in accounts. I heard they are also planning to activate 10% VAT on every transaction that takes place on our ATM cards. We run a risk of the government tax people, regulators and banksters being unable to distinguish between investments and income! |

VeeVeeMyLuv:New tax law has no effect on treasury bill. Nothing new. If it does please someone should help explain, thanks |

RayRay06677:Your TB is a short term instrument. They will share in your profit. |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by RayRay06677(m): 11:43am On Dec 31, 2025 |
1kinggy:What will be new? Definitely nothing, we are paying already so new law has no new hold on us. Gurus can explain further, |

You know how dubious these guys can be For instance You invested 10m in TBills at rate of 15% for 352 days. Upfront you get the interest to the tune of 1.35m after withholding tax of 150k was taken off. Now at the maturation of the tenor (after the 352 days), will the government still tax this 10m? By removing VAT (10%) and income tax (25%) from the 10m, by playing deaf and dumb in being unable to discriminate between income and investment? Leaving you with 6.5m? |

The New Tax Reform Law (1 Jan 2026) is applicable to income not capital. Interest income on short-term securities and dividends excluding government bonds, have WHT applied to them (10%). So no change there. Note, you can utilise your WHT deductions against your total taxable income should you choose .A summary of the Tax Reform Law is here: https://fiscalreforms.ng/index.php/2025/11/03/fifty-50-tax-exemptions-and-reliefs-that-will-benefit-the-masses-under-the-new-tax-reform-laws-effective-from-1-january-2026/ RayRay06677: |

Vincentnwankwo:Yes they are licensed |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Odunharry(m): 12:03pm On Jan 02 |
viazi:Your bank is the best bet or visit any licensed investment house. Though, you can get above what Tbills is doing currently for shorter tenure if you invest in fixed deposit. You can check my signature |

skydiver01:Well done Boss. Thanks for sharing link |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Odunharry(m): 12:06pm On Jan 02 |
VeeVeeMyLuv:Nobody will tax you once they have already tax you upfront. At maturity you get your principal. If they tax you twice, simply make a complain. |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Odunharry(m): 12:10pm On Jan 02 |
RayRay06677:It does. Before now Tax on Tbills was suspended then later reintroduce about three years ago but some banks don't charge. Late last year, a circular was released by FIRS mandating all banks and investment house to deduct WHT on short term instrument. For Government instruments that are more than a year like FGN Savings, Sukuk, Bond etc and they won't be taxed |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by freeman67: 2:20pm On Jan 02 |
Nakedman:People just dey do anyhow for this administration and nobody to caution them. Even Sukuk IV rent/coupon payment that was due on 29th of December have not been paid. As far as I know, these things doesn't used to be like this before this present. Even workers are owed salaries for additional one month within their organisation and nobody can say anything. |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by RayRay06677(m): 2:22pm On Jan 02 |
Odunharry:WHT is not a new component, we paid and will continue paying. Any other new tax on treasury bill investment? I think none. If there's, let's learn together. |

| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by vanvickie(m): 4:12am On Jan 03 |
VeeVeeMyLuv:Please someone should respond to this... This government get as e b. Before they'll classify it as an income hence, it needs to be taxed at prevailing rates... |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Nakedman: 8:56am On Jan 03 |
vanvickie:Scroll up. The question has been answered multiple times |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by freeman67: 11:47am On Jan 03 |
vanvickie:The question was answer immediately after your post. It's not your capital that is taxed. It's your gain or interest that is tax. If they tax you further after the deduction of WHT it will amount to double taxation. The taxation for investments like CP's, TB's and corporate bonds (Shot Term Debt) is Withholding Tax (WHT) and it's on interest/profit made. In fact even the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) which has capital in its name focus more on gains or profits made, not the capital invested. |
| Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Oyibopepe2000: 4:52pm On Jan 03 |
Ok. But l let me ask although I asked this question elsewhere but I'm still slightly confused. How about the money we already have in our accounts before this tax law. What happens to it say we don't invest it . Will it be taxed by the end of the year. Also let's say one invested in tbills or mutual funds via one of these fund managers and their app and you finally want to withdrawx your capital or just the gains back to your bank account, will the money (capital or gains) be taxed? If yes what narrative can one use to avoid that? freeman67: |
