The Justice Department is scrambling to review about 5.2 million pages related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to comply with a law passed by Congress, a source familiar with the operation told NBC News on Tuesday night.

That number is much higher than previously known.

The Justice Department was seeking to enlist roughly 400 employees in the effort to sift through the records, which is expected to run from Friday to Jan. 20, two sources familiar with the plan told NBC News.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Wednesday that lawyers from department’s headquarters, the FBI, the Southern District of Florida and the Southern District of New York “are working around the clock through the holidays, including Christmas and New Years, to review documents in compliance with federal law.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who has been leading the congressional charge to make public the government’s investigatory files on Jeffrey Epstein, gave a level-headed response to President Donald Trump’s latest outburst on the topic.

“Whether he wants to release them or not, the law requires it,” Massie wrote on X. Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act into law last month.

The president had taken to Truth Social to complain about a Justice Department claim to have found a trove of more than 1 million additional documents potentially related to Epstein’s misdeeds.

“DOJ is being forced to spend all of its time on this Democrat inspired Hoax. When do they say NO MORE, and work on Election Fraud etc. The Dems are the ones who worked with Epstein, not the Republicans,” Trump wrote Friday.
