Bible reading; the key to spiritual growth (1)

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth.” Joshua 1:8

God gave Joshua a big job: conquer the Promised Land and divide it up among the twelve tribes of Israel. He also gave him the key to success: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” God didn’t command Joshua to seek a spiritual experience or a personal revelation. He told him to meditate on the Scriptures.

Greg Hawkins and Cally Parkinson wrote a book called Move. They wanted to find the key factors for spiritual growth, so they surveyed the congregations of one thousand churches. Here’s what they found: “Nothing has a greater impact on spiritual growth than reflection on Scripture. If churches could only do one thing to help people at all levels of spiritual maturity grow in their relationship with Christ, their choice is clear. They would inspire, encourage, and equip their people to read the Bible.” You don’t grow in Christ simply because you’re busy in church; it happens automatically when you read and trust God’s Word. So engage with your Bible. Meditate on it day and night. Think and rethink on it. Let it be your guide. Make it your go-to book for questions. Let it be the ultimate authority in your life. Peter puts it this way: “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2 NKJV).

I concur, the living word of God is eternal and timeless not to mention how addictive it’s get the more you make effort to read it daily

Yes self understanding and meditation on God’s word is the foundation of life.

Nor let one person use religion deceive you, seek God yourself in his words.

It has fought against Bible reading with panic prayers, miracle searching, motivation speaking, feel good teaching, entertainment, too many unnecessary church programs.

The word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path. Psalms 119 vs 105.

What do you take for spiritual growth.

I dont see any growth for your spiritual life.

Good question - Jesus is THE WORD OF GOD, so his followers had that.
Then there were the scriptures, what we now call the old testaments- the prophetic books and the Psalms. And oral traditions passed down through various generations.
So the people were never alone without guidance of scriptures or oral traditions.

There were scriptures written by the prophets at that time. Jesus and His disciples read the scriptures which we now compile and call Bible these days. (Check Luke 4:16-20, Matthew 22:29-32, Acts 8:26-40)

From the way the Devil fights us not to pray and Study the Bible it shows that they are real keys in overcoming this life

Know this and secure your relationship with God not on so-called man of GOD. Even if you don't pray much.

Reading and meditating on the word of God is the solution to most problems we are facing in life....If you know ,you know..

Honestly, Bible reading really matters, but I think people oversimplify it sometimes. Reading the Bible alone doesn’t automatically translate to spiritual growth if there’s no understanding or application. Many people read it daily like a routine, yet their character doesn’t reflect anything spiritual.

For me, the key is intentional reading — asking questions, reflecting, and actually trying to live out what you read. Even a few verses properly understood can be more impactful than rushing through chapters just to tick a box. Also, prayer and personal discipline go hand in hand with Bible reading; one without the other feels incomplete.

Spiritual growth is a journey, not a competition of who reads the most chapters.

If you are obedient, you will enjoy thr good of the land, not if you read the bible. Millions read the bible but don't obey it. True love to God is summed up in obedience, which entitles us to every divine promise in the holy book.

I am a Muslim, a practicing Muslim by the way, and I take my religion of Islam incredibly seriously but I read the Bible from time to time, I love Prophet Jesus unimaginably

Are the contexts the same?

Which scriptures did Jesus and the disciples read? Can you show us where the verses and chapters were mentioned by Jesus or his disciples?

Who compiled the scriptures and when?

Is there any evidence Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, etc wrote anything from the Bible, I mean evidences there were real people who wrote those texts?

Evidence the texts were preserved and not corrupted by the Romans who were in charge then?

What do you mean by Jesus is the WORD of God? Is it that God can not speak without Jesus coming out of His mouth?

What Prophetic Books were available during the time of Jesus? Give us the Books, what translation was available then?

And as regard Oral traditions, who were the ones transmitting the texts orally? Are they sound, sane and honest?
