Elderly Anambra Man Banished From His Village For Raping A Married Woman by Kingsley34(op): 12:21pm On Jan 06

In a powerful display of traditional authority, women from Uruezi Egbema in Ozubulu, Anambra State, Nigeria—known as Umuada (daughters of the land)—banished an elderly man from the community following serious allegations that he raped a married woman.

The video captures the ritualistic procession where dozens of women, dressed in colorful traditional wrappers and holding green branches (symbolizing cleansing and judgment in Igbo culture), surround and escort the shirtless man out of the village along a rural path. The atmosphere is charged with chants, gestures, and communal enforcement, highlighting the significant role Umuada play in upholding moral standards and resolving disputes in Igbo societies.

This incident, which occurred on January 5, 2026, has sparked discussions online about women's power in Igbo land, vigilante justice versus formal legal processes, and questions regarding the man's physical capability given his apparent age and frailty.

Note: The allegations remain unverified by official authorities, and no police statement has been issued as of now. This reflects longstanding cultural practices where community elders and women's groups can impose sanctions for perceived abominations.

First of all, I DON'T trust married women.

That man looks BRITTLE.
All you need to do to INCAPACITATE him is blow a little BREEZE in his direction.

Secondly, if he truly RAPED someone.
He should be in JAIL.

NOT banished.

My first question is this
How can a man looking this old have the strength to rape you, not that I am trying to justify what he did but the story doesn't just add up.

I just feel sorry for the poor man

This can never happen to an influential man in that society.
Laws and traditional culture are designed for the less privilege

In the same Anambra that is like Paris? What happened to Nigeria Police station there?

So where did they want him to go ? Another village? Town? State ? to continue from where he stopped?

The man could be innocent of the crime levelled against him and still treated like an animal.

My country is still backward

I have seen and read about Igbos banishing and ostracising people that committed atrocities & sacrilege and have seen Igbos burn houses belongings to ritualists and kidnapers here on nairaland

I don't know why other tribes can't copy this.

Before the Whiteman brought Police force and the Court system the Igbo culture already have democractic system, Right of speech and judicial systems

It's people who don't understand the Igbo culture that will always shout patriarchy. No one has the power to banish anyone except the women (umuada)
