Change of clothes doesn't change character. Our university systems are too outdated. They should evolve and upgrade. We are not in the 19th century for heaven's sake. Create programs within the curriculum for periodical orientation and reorientation of the students and staffs. They are not children but adults treat them as such so they can be mentally ready for the world outside. It's not a military institution where students are trained to follow orders without questions. They should be encouraged to express themselves freely and that's the only way to truly grow and attain their full potentials. Funny thing is even after all these the bad ones become even worse off than they used to be. All these ore colonial mentality doesn't work. |

Daniluv1:Na the end result of over caging with strict rules for adults who are about to face reality. When someone in that age range feels caged they do worse than others who are allowed some significant measures of freedom when they see any slight opportunity |

When will they create policies to foster better research from members of faculty and students? I don't know when people's personal lives became the concerns of our institutions. If you don't trust an undergraduate student to be matured, then why blame the society for not giving the youths a shot at leadership? Failed system, failed institution. |

Samantha125:Ehn yes but within their four walls they have rules that they want their students to obey....since it isn't against the law...simply obey or do the needful! Life no hard! Aside: Let's imagine these are rules at the typical favourite Nigerian embassy-think UK, US, Canadian embassy etc. This won't be a problem right! I'm comparing apples and oranges? Maybe but the point is rules are rules! |

What exactly is wrong with dreadlocks. Just one logical reason with zero fallacious statements. How does having dreadlocks cause harm to individuals and how is it bad for society? Very useless restrictions with no proper management of the root cause of maral decadence on university grounds. They think everything can be solved with rules. Very useless country. Everything just dey useless. |

okrikaboi:Blame Bob Marley, and the Rastafarian sect, who were known to use weed for religious purposes and many of whose practicioners wear....dreadlocks. It made many Nigerians think that dreadlocks =drug abuse. (even when many people that smoke weed even now don't have dreadlocks nor practice rastafarianism for that matter) Also, some people with mental illness who wander the street...their hair may grow very long, look matted and look like ...dreadlocks. Throw in the fact that some people with mental illnesses also abuse illicit drugs....you get the point now. Otherwise nothing wrong with dreadlocks. |

nairalanda1:That's why it is the dumbest thing for an educational institution to enforce. It's just a microcosm of Nigeria's logic pattern and failure. Very useless dumb people and institution. Instead of properly educating and end stereotyping which has caused more harm than good they are passing stupid laws. |

wirinet:When i was in university back in 2002, I was advised to change my bank to Standard trust bank (merged with UBA in 2005/6)..because at the time they were one of few banks that used the internet for transfers . One thing I noticed at the bank was that there was a dress code for the workers. Every one of them dressed in a particular way. Also, at the time, as a student doing a medicine related course...we had to dress in a particular way while 'on the campus/faculty/hospital' The goal is to prepare the students for the world of tomorrow, where there are dress codes galore. Some of the students would work in a factory. Dress code. Some would end up in a bank or company. Dress code. And the medical field is basically dress code zone. Even if some of the students set up their business...they will require a dress code. Morality really is just to keep the religious constituents happy. The real issue is prep for tomorrow. Heck, even the uniformed services employ ...graduates. There, you got to wear a uniform 24/7. IN my field of medicine, if I dressed in one of the 'banned' items of clothing, a lot of patients are going to look at me as if I am weird. Sadly, the world is a visual world. Personally, I don;t judge people by their dressing...having met people in university who dressed 'anyhow' yet were good people, but in the real world? Yes, there be rules. |

okrikaboi:IN fairness, the goal is to prepare them for the world of tomorrow, where dress codes exist far too much. (As someone who works in medicine, where there are dress codes...for when you see patients, enter theater, etc...I can verify, plus some of them will end up in the armed forces and uniformed services where they will even wear uniforms and have hairstyle regulations self) As for dreads, well, I know not every dreadlocked person is 'mad'. (Ras Kimono, the late reggae star always stated that he was a vegetarian and did not smoke nada, and then Ruud Gulit, the dutch star of the eighties in football had a nice dreadlocked hairstyle...and probably never smoked...since he played for MIlan which at the time was bringing in strict health measures for all its players). |

It will be an issue where African hair is concerned, why do we have so much self hate as Africans? I don't really care about the rest, my biggest concern is the dreadlocks rule for guys... West African men used to grow their hair prior colonization and dreadlocks are one of the best protective styles for African hair. Can a predominantly white school forbid dreadlocks on either African or black guys without being labelled racist? shaqhead: |
