For Nigerians who have lived outside the country for a while, getting certain documents from home can become a real headache.

Things that were once straightforward like obtaining a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or affidavit suddenly involve phone calls across time zones, multiple follow-ups, and a lot of uncertainty.

Some people rely on relatives back home, others use agents, and some just postpone the process altogether because it feels too stressful or unpredictable.

I’d like to hear from those who’ve gone through this while living abroad:

What document were you trying to get?

What part of the process gave you the most trouble?

Was it delays, cost, trust, or something else?

It would be interesting to compare experiences and see what the common pain points really are.
Its pretty much easier if you know one of the officials

Thanks for the contributions, everyone.

@Shikena and @MemoriesAndMe really highlighted the core issue: Once you are abroad, you need a trusted pair of legs on the ground, but trust is hard to find.

I actually started this thread because I’ve been working on a solution for this exact 'Diaspora Trap'. I got tired of hearing stories about people sending money home for documents and getting nothing but excuses.

I’d like to introduce the community to Docs by Proxy ( https://www.docsbyproxy.com ).

How it solves the problems mentioned here:

For the 'Trust' Issue: We built an Escrow System. You fund the request, but the agent/proxy does not get paid until they upload the watermarked proof that the job is done. Your money is safe.

For the 'School-to-School' Issue: Our proxies can physically go to universities/ministries to process transcripts and ensure they are mailed directly to WES/Institutions as required.

For the 'Already Abroad' crowd: You don't need to beg uncle/aunty. You just post the job, get bids, and hire a verified proxy.

We are currently in Beta and I specifically wanted to share it with the Nairaland family first to get honest feedback.

Does this sound like something that would solve the headache for you guys? Critiques are welcome! smiley
The issue of paying the proxy.
You know how Nigerian system is rife with bribery and corruption.
In a case where the proxy has to grease some palms, will the proxy do that from his own pockets? How about transportation costs, accommodation costs in a situation where the job is to be done in a faraway location, feeding, e.t.c.
As you said, he/she won't be paid until job is done

If you are leaving Nigeria for another country, it is best to get all the necessary documents before you travel. Otherwise, it may be difficult to obtain documents like school transcripts unless you have someone you trust back home who is willing to help you.

The best advice is to make sure all your documents are in order—such as your school transcripts, birth certificate, and other important records—before leaving.
But they don't usually send transcripts to individuals, or do they huh I learnt they only send it to institutions or corporate educational organizations

Most difficult for people that I've heard is school transcripts. Some Nigeria schools are still 100 years backward. Thank God my school nor follow join, because getting new transcripts from my school last year was easy and straightforward.
what school was that please?

Where are you based? The current interior minister has made some improvement in the overall process and I believe other changes are coming.
Why can't you get e-visa on your baby's passport? The process is pretty straightforward.
ask those abroad. NIN site is totally not working while passport not possible to obtain within six months

I live in the UK with my two children. One is under 16 and the other is above. I applied for thier passport renewals online and within a month I got a response - Both now have thier respective passports(5 and 10 years).

The older one was enrolled without a visit to the Nigeria House via the NIS contactless app. My younger child had to visit the Nigeria House for biometric capturing because he's yet to be 16.That's my personal experience. I didn't go through anyone. I just trusted the process and it worked for me.

My baby cant have passport and thats why we couldn't travel back home. Everything about Nigeria just hard. Getting passport while abroad is the most difficult thing right now. The minister of interior shouod resign for incompetence

You did not answer my question. Abroad is not a single country.
E-visa is an option if you have issues with Nigerian passport and very easy process.

Thank you. That's exactly why I asked for the location.

Operating Nigerian bank account. After a sudden upgrade of banking app, I couldn’t login to my bank account as my mobile number was reassigned to someone else, can you believe that? So I had to get the NR-BVN number.

If getting him NIN is proving difficult and you really have to travel with him to Nigeria, then apply for Emergency Travel Certificate from the Nigerian High Commission - it's available online too. You can then proceed with his NIN enrollment once you're in Nigeria.

Try getting transcripts from some school...e go be like war...

Even after making payments on school website.... LAUTECH for example...

U will need to link up with someone who in the student affairs to help u to follow up...and that won't be for free
Oh my God! LAUTECH showed me . At the end I just abandoned it because I got a way around it

Transcripts. It took me about three years and even then I only received it when I was in Nigeria. For three years I waited for them to send my transcript to no avail. Then my mother applied and informed me that they have sent it to me but I didn't receive it. When I visited home the following year, I stopped by my alma mater and reapplied and paid the required fee. When I came back, just as the personnel was processing it, one of their colleagues said they it was likely my transcript was already processed and that they should check. The man pulled out his drawer and there was my transcript just lying there. For how long it was there, I don't know. They apologized and told me to go back to the bursary and request for my money back which I did. The bursar absolved himself of blame even after saying he won't give me the whole sum of money (it was 500 Naira then). He instead gave me 450 Naira and pocketed 50 Naira.
