What You Aren't Checking Might Be Killing Your Engine. by Carmadesimpe(op): 10:13am On Jan 07
I’m noticing the harmattan haze shifting. Light here in Abeokuta and heavy in some states.

As a Lube Engineer and your Car Concierge, I want to address a part 90% of drivers ignore: The Air Filter.

Most people think servicing is just oil and oil filters. They forget the engine breathes air.

Why you should care:
1. Fuel Consumption: A clogged filter is like running a marathon with a mask on. Your engine works 10% harder and burns 10% more fuel.
2. Engine Longevity: Harmattan dust is fine silt. If the filter is full, that silt goes into your combustion chamber and scratches your cylinder walls. This is the silent killer that leads to smoky engines and thousands/millions of engine swaps.

Where to find it (DIY):
You don't need a mechanic for this.
1. Open your hood.
2. Locate a black plastic housing/box usually located to the left or right of the engine.
3. Snap off the metal clips (or unscrew it).
4. Lift the filter out. If it’s filled with sand or is dark gray/black, it’s dead. Replace it with a genuine OEM part immediately.

In 2026, we are spending less time at the mechanic and more time enjoying the drive. That starts with Engineering Certainty.

Got questions about your specific car model? Drop them below and I’ll tell you exactly what to look for. 🛠️

Drive safe, drive simple.

Re: What You Aren't Checking Might Be Killing Your Engine. by Seyi8750:
You might need to clean or replace your airflow sensor as well if the filter is bad. The airflow sensor makes your car work perfectly with the help of mixing air and fuel in the combustion chamber for smooth and efficient performance. Without enough air intake your car will be running on fuel and make your engine wear. You might notice black smoke coming out of the exhaust which means your vehicle is consuming much fuel than usual.

Lack of engine thermostat will kill the engine because the cold oil temperature will affect engine performance 📌💯

Your last line was actually unnecessary. He has started the initiative, more engineers can support by sharing ideas.

Just last week i saw a man changed his truck tire with the help of Google, i was surprised at first, that he was using Google, until i saw how he removed the spare tire, it's a new Chevrolet(TAHOE).
There's no way i could have known how to do that.

So, be calming down bro.

If you're referring to the picture the OP posted, that's not locking. That is done to hold the battery in place.

Kindly make a shot video or use graphical illustrations. Thanks

Due to high cost of Toyota Corolla parts, am thinking of buying Honda as my next car when God blesses me. A jeep maybe.

JuanDeDios:

It's never a good idea. A working thermostat CAN NEVER hurt the engine, no matter the climate condition... It's meant to open when the engine reaches its optimum temperature and close when it drops. This gives room for a better fuel consumption and your radiator fans would last longer.

NOTE: I've been using thermostat in all the cars I've used since i started driving. I even sell them off with the thermostat in it.

It's exact look varies from car to car... However, it's located along the air intake hose. It's usually a big box you'll see along the air intake pipe.

This is the problem with Nigerians: laziness entrenched with entitlement mentality. You want everything handed down to you in bread crumbs. Someone has taken his time to share some of his acquired knowledge to help other unsuspecting drivers (you didn't pay him or ask for his help), and your only response is that he didn't include annotated pictures. The entitled nerve you have! Absolutely lazy and entitled.

The time it took you to type the contraption you typed up there, you could've used less than that time to type a simple "how to locate my air filter" on Google or YouTube and in seconds you have even more information than he has given you. The world is literally at your fingertips, but lazy Nigerian youths will complain that nothing is working because they want everything to be done for them. Smdh for you

Air filter and gear oil are among the services that Nigerian motorists mostly ignore, and that can cause major problems.
