Should A Wife Wash Her Husband’s Clothes In This Present Age? by Lamanii22(op): 4:48pm On Jan 13
Hello famlanders! So a friend told me her husband is complaining that she doesn’t wash his clothes, so my question is that should a man be considerate enough to give his clothes to dry cleaners instead or it’s a must for the woman to do that?

Here’s my own story: I watched my mom washed my dad’s clothes til my old man passed, I tried to do the same with my husband’s clothes but he complained that I put too much pressure on his clothes lol 😂 that he would do his laundry by himself… imho if there are kids involved already, the husband should be kind enough to do his own laundry then the wife can wash her own clothes as well as the kids’ thank you.

7KG Hisense Washing Machine is JUST #200K.
Get it and stop the NONSENSE.

It comes with a Dryer too.

Clothes that can't be washed in machine can be DRY CLEANED.
It's CHEAP!

Plus, washing clothes is oddly THERAPEUTIC.

Having said that, an UNEMPLOYED Full Housewife should NOT be part of the people complaining about this.

Yes, if your husband married a slave. No, if he married a partner.

Yes, if your husband lost the use of his hands. No, if his two hands are still intact.

Yes, if you're pretending to be the perfect wife. No, if setting boundaries is important to you.

So many do's and don'ts in Nigerian marriages makes it so daunting and emotionally draining.

In this day and age, people are too broke to buy washing machines? The cheapest family sized washing machine is around 180K. Anybody who can’t afford it has no business with matrimony.

1. You can wash it only if he will pay you for the work and you are in need of the pay. He washed his clothes before he married you, so he should be able to continue washing his clothes even after marriage. 🥱🥱

As far back as the 80s, we had neighbors whose husbands did their own laundry so it has never been q matter of age but a matter for individual couples to decide for themselves. Basically , individual couples decide who gets to handle what chores, how often and when. 🥱🥱🥱

3. With washing machines now in many homes, you will find that some husbands are literally in charge of doing all of the laundry in the home. 🥱🥱🥱

Re: Should A Wife Wash Her Husband’s Clothes In This Present Age? by pocohantas(f): 9:35pm On Jan 13
It is not about present age or anything.
It is about the individuals involved. My dad washes his clothes himself and Mine uses a drycleaner for outing clothes and handles the rest himself. Unbelievably, I have never washed his clothes. I cannot date or marry a man who finds it convenient to leave his dirty sweaty clothes and boxers piled up for another person to wash. It tells a lot about your hygiene level.
But she is already married to him.

These are things to check out for in dating. But to Naija women, once a man doesn't cheat or beat them __he is a "good man".

For reasons I am not really sure washing machines have gone mainstream like that. When I was younger we had one and we were mocked for being aje butter for not washing clothes by hand.

You know the average Nigerian still celebrates stressful manual labour and difficulty over ease. Like people who will insist on pounding yam when you can simply buy poundo yam.

It is what it is.
Re: Should A Wife Wash Her Husband’s Clothes In This Present Age? by folake4u: 9:45pm On Jan 13
I have NEVER washed my parents clothes with my hands. We had a washerwoman while growing up and eventually got a washing machine. My father delegates his suits/outing clothes to drycleaners.

Why should I wash your undies for you sef? Isn't that ment?

You guys should continue sufferhead in 2026.

Nigerians just like nonsense. This is 2026 and we are still talking about washing clothes as a dealbreaking chore. Such a poor country. A few years ago able bodied men on Nairaland gathered to call women who cannot use grinding stone, lazy.

can you people get a washing machine? undecided

A washing machine of 7kg cost around 200k and second hand around 100k or even less!

Why do you people love embracing poverty to the extent of fighting over who is to wash clothes!
If it's food I would understand. But washing of clothes!?

This question seems ridiculous to me. Why would an adult compel another to do his laundry? In this case, what was discussed while they were dating? Did she agree to do his laundry etc? To the present, can they afford a washing machine? If yes, they should buy and that would resolve the challenge.

When I read topics like this, I am amused. I still don't understand why a man expects his wife to do his laundry and why a wife agrees to such.

You’re asking a query over which biological unit should perform a background task that was solved by industrial automation decades ago. Whether the wife or the husband operates the machine is irrelevant.

The only logical metric is efficiency.

1. Does the husband’s time have a higher market value than the cost of a washing machine? If yes, he shouldn't be doing it.

2. Does the wife’s time have a higher market value? If yes, she shouldn't be doing it.

If neither of them can afford to automate this task or outsource it, they have both failed at basic resource acquisition and should probably stop breeding so that they don't pass on their ineffectual genes.

I wonder what they argue again maybe about who gets the biggest piece of meat in the soup. the level of intellectual stimulation on this forum is on a lower end of the spectrum. I blame seun for this.

Different strokes for different folks.

In relationships, anybody can do anything, depending on the level of understanding between couples, and what works for them.

Couples should do whatever works for them, and desist from bringing their intimate/personal matters online.

The greatest challenge in marriage is not cheating.
We never talk about it and the society ignores it completely.
When the coin flips and the wife start earning higher than the husband she depends on before, expect everything in that marriage that will shock the living daylight out of you to happen.

Here, its very easy for wives to earn above their husbands cos most men find some jobs demeaning and beneath them yet such jobs pays a lot.

The man will frustrate you if you decide not to hand him over your paycheck. You will give him money to send to his people and he gets all the glory because you are covering his unclothedness. Thesame people will be yabbing you endlessly. That mansion in the village is built by you but you have to pretend that its your husband that is doing the job. Nigerian marriage is extremely toxic except you start fighting for what you believe in from the beginning.
I have seen so much that I now know why they said naija women abroad are wicked and not submissive. And they will never behave that way around foreign wives. Even if you are the one who brought him over or not, it doesnt matter. You are practically a slave to some useless cultural practices and religious dogmas that pins women to the ground. Anytime you wanna use your brain, you are termed feminist.

No wonder we are the poorest in the world.
What we see as average income in Nigeria is poorer than how some people living in the rural areas considered as poor lives.

For this, a notable agrobusinessman said the poundo does not contain enough yam flour, as sourcing yams is hard due to it being seasonal. As a result, they add other additives to make it look "real" so they break even.

I have never eaten poundo yam, but I can imagine actual pounded yam being more nutritious than the former. Just that to maintain lifestyles in today's world, one needs to have money. Unfortunately, Nigeria is a poor country. The majority of Nigerians don't use a washing machine not because they don't like it, but because they don't have the money.

There are multiple grades of washing machine. And Nigeria is a country of Tokunbo. If you can buy a new LG top loading 7kg washing machine for 200k (I had to retire my washing machine last week so I was in their store and saw different washing machines), you can get a Tokunbo or a midea for less. Nigerians will somehow scrape together 150k to buy a phone or a TV so they can definitely do same for a washing machine

(just last week I could not convince a person to buy a cheaper brand new xiaomi for 180k,person insisted on a used Samsung at 250k)

I have come to think of it as Nigerians do not value efficiency / time. Average Nigerian will opt for the difficult or time consuming way to execute a task because look at hard working me.

People will queue for 45 minutes to buy 10 litres 739 fuel at Mrs, sometimes waiting for the station to open, when same fuel is being sold at other stations for 800. 45 minutes or more to save less than 1k.

As to the poundo being different, I cannot remember any particular difference in taste, but maybe that's just me. Would prefer to buy than have the missus stress herself out pounding yam.

It depends on the individual. I washed my dad's easy clothes, and he handed the bulky wears to the dry cleaners. However, I do not like anyone in the house to wash my clothes unless I am extremely ill for a long time, and even then, I wash my innerwear myself. My innerwear is never outsourced.

P.S. Washing myself = using the washing machine.

Financial abuse! I have confirmed firsthand that if you want to enjoy your marriage to an extent, you should have money as a woman. I have even written on it in my _______. You need money to buy certain household appliances and gadgets that will make your life easier. I do it a lot because I no get strength to dey do chochocho with am. Even something as basic as outdoor bin, I bought it to reduce the interval I run after waste disposers. I buy the ones I can buy and get going. It is me that knows how much time and energy it would save me _to avoid issues like this. If I keep talking with him, he would leave the one I need and be buying me something else. Then act surprised when I am not as excited as he expected.

Within themselves, I am sure many Nigerian couples have spent the cost of a Tokunbo washing machine on junks, wigs and beer. But somehow they still see washing machine as a luxury that average homes cannot have in 2026. It is priorities. Some would buy beer, but their bedsheets and towels are wornout. Some would buy wigs, but they don't have pressing iron. I don't live my life that way. I focus on functionality.

Relationship is the time to establish the kind of wife you will be. Maybe it is immaturity, but women don't do that, only to start it inside marriage and they get accused of changing or being rebellious feminist.

The only person whose clothes my mum used to wash was my brother's, and his wife reset the nonsense commot for him body.
