We would have easily won the most without Hayatou (1988, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2004) Then (1984, 1990, 2023)- all finals! (Then 2021 & 2026)- the best team. Omo Nigeria try oo, we could have easily been out of sight for any African team! What a shame! minfelix: |

Bossoflife25:Now ad hominems, the Senegalese team won the 2021 Afcon defeating the host nation in the semi final in the process and won the 2026 Afcon beating the host nation in the final, go and buy a television, stop smoking pot and being arrogant. The NFF can't even organize decent friendly games against top sides and you are being arrogant and blaming Issa Hayatou. Since FIFA launched their change of association platform in February 2025, the Senegalese have successfully completed switches of a few players to boost their squad, compare it with your NFF.

Joebie:This isn't about age, it's about recycling the same players we've known for years...Iheanacho has always been one of my favorite players but his work rate is poor and we've been through that route already with players with those attributes, no disrespect to senior man but I struggle to see anything new and interesting he can offer us at this point. Sometimes it's just best to close the chapter on certain things. |

Like I said you don't have TV at home. lol! Which host Nation did Senegal defeat at 2021 AFCON. In 2021, Senegal only goal at the group stage was a fluke penalty given to them against Zimbabwe. A tackle that was clearly outside the box. That simple fortune from CAF helped them qualify now they are doing holier than though. lol! They went on to play 10 man Cape Verde, Equitorial Guinea, and Burkina. And could only defeat Egypt through penalties. If that is not luck what is it? lol 2023 they met the host nation and got eliminated. 2026 they became cry babies till Diaz just dashed them the trophy. So which host Nation did they defeat? Player for player which of their foreign born has perfoprmed better than ours at AFCON in the last 7 years! Name one! Go sit down one place. With all their friendlies they struggled to beat a tired Morocco and DRC. The only two good teams they met. Go sleep one place. If those guys don't play for Senegal which country will they play for? France reject is nothing to celebrate. Okoronkwo and Ryan too just changed. So what are you on about? Karlovich: |

At 2021 AFCON we were simply unplayable despite not going with our two most inform strikers (Osimhen and Dennis). Senegal was so porous that they needed a fluke penalty against Zimbabwe to get out of the group stage. Zimbabwe was the better team and should have won. Senegal played goaless draw with Malawi and Guinea. Nigeria got unlucky against Tunisia. One shot, one goal and a red to Iwobi on 48 minutes. The best team with 9 points without its best players out. Senegal opponents got a red card instead. That Senegal went on to win against an Egyptian team we battered blue and black. I could never have imagine that few years down the line these small boys will be comparing us to the Italians of African football. lol What a shame! In the last 6 years of AFCON Senegal has not produced any special talent at AFCON aside Mane, and someone will come here to compare such ridiculous team to the Super eagles. Fortune favor them. Simple and good luck to them. The Super Eagles are getting close and it will end in praise pretty soon. Our two World Cup miss was simply because we were unlucky. We played Ghana both home and away without Iwobi and Ndidi. Despite that we drew 0-0 in Accra with Simon missing a 1v1. To make matter worse, Bonke got injured in Accra, Onyeka in Abuja. All four top midfielders out. We had to play Shehu in midfield for 45 minutes despite that the boys tried their best. What else can you do about that? Senegal won again through penalties against Egypt to qualify for the World cup. The 2026 WQ qualifiers stated too early for our boys. Osimhen, Lookman, Ndidi, Iwobi were not available against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Against South Africa and Benin we were simply unlucky. We have been very unlucky in the past 6 years at AFCON! No more no less. No team! No players have performed better than us in the last 5 years at AFCON! But it is what it is. |

Bossoflife25:I'll give you this. Excellent addition to the backline. Tested and trusted. Akinsanmiro- Pisa (Intermilan)Not yet tested. May have potential though, so I'll give you this too. Chukwueze- Fulham (Ac milan)Meh... Honestly we should have better options. Can be solid on his best day but terribly inconsistent. A "moments" guy. Bashiru- LazioI'll give you this. Bashiru is fantastic in my books when deployed properly. Akor is good but still needs improvement with his physicality. Lost too many balls in the semi-finals and playoffs. Rafiu isn't tested, but has shown promise based on club side performance. Okoye- UdineseMeh... I guess. Tolu- WolvesLmfao. Don't even go there. Absolutely terrible. We need much better options. Uche- Crystal palaceHe's decent. Onyedika- Brugge to Aston VillaNot bad. But not excellent either. We need better options. Bassey- Fulham to Inter milanSolid addition for the future. We need capable backups though. Ogbu is the only one I can think of. Nnadi- Zulte to West ham soonShows a lot of promise. I'll give you this. Suleiman- LeipzigNot yet tested. But I guess we can add him. Orban- VeronaGiven the entire brouhaha surrounding his eligibility, is there even any point adding this guy? Oh well. Ryan- Rover to Wolfburg soonSolid addition. Moffi- NiceMeh... Don't know about this. Boniface- Bayern LeverkusenLmao. You must be taking the piss. 😂 Special mentionNone have been tested. Any of these guys could be another Tolu Arokodare in the waiting for all we know. Particularly David Moses. Nothing about that guy has impressed me. Don't really get the hype. |

Bossoflife25:Their foreign born players just won a trophy including a 17 year old and you are opening your large mouth like the fish that swallowed Jonah while talking rubbish, Arthur Okonkwo and Ryan Alebiosu played no official games for England youth teams and as such didn't require clearance from FIFA. |

Bossoflife25:Emphasis mine Bro what kind of horrendous take is this? Lamine Camara? Papa Gueye? Papa Mate Sarr? Ismaila Sarr? Mbaiye? Ndiaye? These are all bums to you? Lmfao. The way some of you here talk down actual talented teams just to cover or sweep Nigeria's own flaws under the rug is borderline insane. I get patriotism, but then this one is just outright mendacity and wilful self-sabotage dressed up in apologetics. |

How many team of the tournament were they in? In what year? I am talking AFCON performance not club levels. You guys just cry when other wins. That is football. When last did France, England, Portugal, Germany, Holland etc won something. Does that mean that have flaws too. I am just shocked that you guys do not understand that in football the best team do not win sometimes, and that has nothing to do with any flaw. The Ivory Coast barely made it out of the group stage but won the last AFCON. Nigeria barely made it out of 2013 AFCON group stage but still went on to win. Ivory Coast was the best team in the 2005 to 2015 but only won the AFCON ones. It was Egypt that was winning with practically home based players. Playing the Italian way. Morocco, Algeria, DRC laured many foreign born too but what have they been able to achieve at AFCON? NasirIbnLaAhad: |

It is good that the the NFF are looking at keeping Chelle but they also need to sort out the issues with the cadet teams on the short and long term. The scouting and recruitment has to be based on meritocracy and transparency. We need square pegs in square holes. Most of the guys in this current SE have not had the opportunity to play at an Olympic games. The squad depth and talent pool of the SE cannot grow of these issues are not addressed . |

NEVER EVER allow to be robbed in the name of professionalism, you gain nothing. In sports or anywhere, BURN IT ALL DOWN. What the Senegalese did was the first and best example of reverse psychology I've seen in real time in football history. It reset everything afterwards. They saw what happened to Cameroon. They witnessed it against Nigeria—and I'm sure they've agreed they would rather walk away than allow the referee to rob them. That wasn't spontaneous. It was a well-thought-out strategy—and it paid off |

Bossoflife25:Senegal picked up their soccer mojo in the early 2000 and since then they are now trying to catch up with our record 2 Afcon title 3 World cup Appearances(4th appearance this year’s edition) 1 Quarterfinals Appearance and 1 Round 16 appearance… Honestly we did not use our opportunities when they presented themselves….Our golden generation did not even smell quarterfinal….we really need to stamp further our authority in African soccer heavyweights. -we need to b qualifying for worldcups -we need to be advancing to more stiffer stages at the world cup -we need to win afcon abeg im tired of all this yeye Ghana,Cameroon,Senegal boasting somethings we are yet to have…our Super eagles of old no try ajeh….we suppose give all this african countries better gap…see Ghana wey qualify to their first ever world cup yesterday, don dey close us on 6world cup appearances…they are currently on 5 |

Haba ! I read here that Senegal won AFCON twice by luck . Haba give credit to the Senegalese team . Twice two domestic coaches won AFCON twice within 4 years and qualify for the world cup . Nigeria failed to qualify for the world cup twice , we are not progressive let not deceive ourselves . Senegal won by hard work and talent not luck. Even when Koulibay and Diattta were not playing the team perform well but for Nigeria once Osihmen is injured or not playing the team cannot score. We must scout for talent and give more players a chance. Durosimi is trying he should be giving a chance |

Bossoflife25:Let's not go off on absurd tangents that disconnect us from the crux of the topic. We're taking of process versus results, sustainability versus fortune. As far as I can see from the debate, no one has outright denied Nigeria's talent or our moments of brilliance. Yes, we have exceptional players, world-class individuals who can compete with anyone on the continent. What I can see that is being questioned here is whether our Football Association has created the systems, structures, and pathways that should allow us to CONSISTENTLY... I say it again... CONSISTENTLY convert that talent into silverware and qualification success. AFCON 2021 we were good. I won't say unplayable, that would be a ridiculous exaggeration. But we were indeed one of the better teams. At least you 5. How far did we go? We didn't even cut the quarter finals. And before you say it was just bad luck, let me push back on this narrative that everything is down to fortune and - as many have latched onto recently - referee decisions. Football might have an element of chance, and yes, sometimes the best team doesn't win on the day. But when you're consistently falling short despite having superior talent on paper, at some point you have to look beyond just bad luck and examine structural issues. Regarding Senegalese talent, Lamine Camara was one of the standout midfielders at the last AFCON. Pape Matar Sarr is thriving in England. These players are performing at elite club level AND translating it to international success. The fact that they might not all make "team of the tournament" doesn't diminish their quality or their FA's ability to integrate them into a cohesive system. You keep pointing to injuries and unavailability as the reason for our failures, but you fail to understand that elite football associations can still build squad depth and systems that can withstand injuries to key players. A well-run FA ensures there's a conveyor belt of talent ready to step in, that coaches have tactical plans that can adapt to personnel changes. That's what I mean by sustainable success versus relying on individual brilliance and fortune. We need to stop being satisfied with volatility and "flash in the pan" brilliance. We should be building systems that produce consistent success across ALL levels and competitions, not just occasionally stumbling into glory. Say what you want but the fact is we've had extended periods of footballing mediocrity in recent times. For a nation of 200+ million people with football as our most popular sport and a diaspora full of dual nationals playing at elite European clubs, this is unacceptable underperformance. It's not just bad luck across multiple tournaments and qualification cycles. It's a systemic issue. Plain and simple. |

minfelix:It's crazy how people get upset when we point out these things. People don't realize the level of expectations international audiences place on Nigeria. One thing I've noticed when I watch foreign media, be it YouTube or local news networks, is that whenever positive news about Nigeria's sporting achievements is shared - like when we beat Algeria - it's often stated as a matter of fact. As if people expect us to beat them normally, so it's not that big of a deal. It's not a shock. I've noticed it's the same with Egypt too. These two teams are often held on such a ridiculously high pedestal, it's not even funny. Even Cameroon that has 5 AFCON trophies is not as well respected. But when it's teams like Ivory Coast, Senegal, and even Morocco, people praise their achievements like it's a major milestone. That's why people make a spectacle of it whenever we lose. One of the major points I have to address whenever I discuss with football fans here is Nigeria's failure to qualify for the World Cup. It's a recurring decimal in any conversation between a Nigerian football fan and any international football fan. To whom much is given, much is expected. People here where I live expect Nigeria to be the best, not one of. It's only there in Nigeria, people compare themselves with Senegal and DR Congo. We're supposed to be miles ahead of them it's not even funny. |
